News to Discover
Happy September!
Before I say anything else, please join me in
giving a huge welcome to Miss Josie, the new
Children’s Library Assistant. We are thrilled
to have her here, and we look forward to putting her talents to use in the World of Discovery.
Our children’s programming resumes this
month! Along with our usual slate of Storytimes, Scrapbooking, and monthly movie, we
have added a few new programs. These include a Kid’s Book Club, Bedtime Storytime,
and Paws to Read Reading Therapy Dogs.
For full information about all of the programs,
please check out our monthly calendar available in the World of Discovery, or our website:

“Catch the Reading Bug”
Wrap-Up
Thank you and congratulations to
all our wonderful Summer Readers
and their families. We had almost 500 children participate in the reading program,
which is more than quadruple the number
from last summer! Our program attendance
also increased, this by 30%. Thank you also
to all of our parents who lent a hand when
we got a little crazy!
Congratulations to our Grand Prize winners:
Bitty Bugs: Annabelle N.
Little Bugs: Angelica T.
Big Bugs: Asad H.
The biggest thank you of all goes
out to our Friends of the Cagan Crossings
Community Library—they funded the entire
program, and it would not have been possible
without them.
Ms. Eleanor and I had a wonderful summer
helping you “Catch the Reading Bug”, and we
look forward to reading with you next summer!
The winning name for our World
of Discovery dragon is “Fireball”.
Thanks to everyone who voted!

Database of the Month
Now that we are beginning a new school year, we want to encourage new students to use some of
our wonderful databases to get top scores on every assignment. Regardless of your age, when you
visit our database webpage, you can find Infotrac Kids Edition – K12 or Junior Edition – K12
These databases have everything that you need for your school projects. A clear user-friendly
interface gives you more control of the results that you get, letting you decide what sources of
information you want to use.
Another advantage is that you can send to your
e-mail any article that you find. Also, you could
create a .pdf document that can be transferred to
any external memory device and accessed from
almost any computer.
Manager tidbits:
September 2008
I am excited to announce that we have hired 2 new employees with a 3rd soon to be added. Josie
Rodriguez began her work with the Youth Services Department on August 25th, and David Poremba will
assume his position as Head of Reference on September 8th. A new part-time Library Assistant should be
joining us no later than mid-September.
Josie lives in Groveland and most recently worked at Lost Lake Elementary. She will be assisting Miss Kerri
and Ms. Eleanor with children’s programming as well as manning the Information Desk to help our children
and parents find the materials and information that they need. As a result of Josie being hired and helping
to share the work load, there will be additional children’s programs added each month.
Sun
David Poremba lives in Davenport and worked for Keiser University after coming to Florida from Detroit,
Michigan. He and reference librarian Juan Lopez will be sharing the adult reference duties at the library,
staggering hours so that one of them will be here virtually all of the time that the library is open. I anticipate that they will also be working together to design and offer programs and classes that will benefit the
entire community.
In other news, the Cagan Crossings library will be hosting 2 authors on October 18th at 1:00 p.m. Lynn
Sholes and Joe Moore have co-written the Cotten Stones thriller series and will be talking about the newest
title in that series, The 731 Legacy , which is scheduled to be released in October. This special program is
part of the Lake County Library System’s “Authors @ the Library Event Series”, a new initiative to encourage the love of reading! The first event in this series will take place at 2 county libraries on September 17,
2008. Lisa Black will discuss her debut novel Takeover at the W.T. Bland Public Library at 2:00 p.m. and at
7:00 p.m. at the Leesburg Public Library.

Funding was provided by the Friends of the Library for the Star Wars Extravaganza,
Summer Reading Program and also new DVDs that are being added to our collection.
In addition to raising money through the Book Fundraiser, they contribute their time to the
library in many different ways. Friends help by reading shelves, shelving books, watering
plants and many other tasks that are greatly appreciated.
The Friends do a fantastic job helping provide for your community library. Please help us
express our gratitude for all their time and contributions!
Thank You Friends!
