This may be an unorthodox way to start the President’s letter, but I felt it was important to emphasise these
key social events. As my school report card often stated “attendance is good, but could be better”, so I
encourage you to make a note in your diary now, and over the course of the year, invite an old friend or two to
one of these enjoyable and relaxing occasions. Thank you for your support.
Our website, www.wesleyppu.com, contains a wealth of information and is frequently updated. It also
includes our Facebook newsfeed so you can read the weekly updates about the school, past pupils in the news,
PPU events, class reunions, and other stories of interest. You may be interested that our most popular post was
about Bob Reed’s retirement which reached 2,039 people and we currently have 366 Likes. We plan to grow
these numbers substantially as we interactively engage with the thousands of Wesley past pupils who use
social media on a daily basis.
2013 is the year of “Gatherings” in Ireland. If your class is planning a reunion please send us the details and
we will promote it on the website and offer any practical support. Small gatherings are very welcome at the
Annual Dinner in October and currently the classes of ’61 and ’63 will be attending. We would be delighted if
other years joined us, but as places are limited, please let us know soon to avoid disappointment.
Looking back on the last year, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as President. Although, my first
engagement at the Golf outing was postponed and then cancelled due to the Irish weather, I am delighted to
report that this year’s outing will be on Friday, 28th June in Rathfarnham. Andrew and Melanie have secured
an excellent rate, and amateurs and pros are all very welcome.
I had the honour to represent Wesley at our kindred Associations dinners and other events, where I met many
old friends, made new acquaintances, endured a few hangovers and put on some extra weight. On a more
serious note, it was interesting to hear how these successful schools face a common challenge of current
government policy and the increasingly unfair teacher/student ratio that is being imposed on them. As a parent
of young children I have to wonder how this will affect Wesley, and I encourage all past pupils, both young
and old, to take a keen interest in the debate.
My thanks to the PPU committee for their hard work, dedication, and spirited discussions at meetings during
the last year. I would like to specially thank Sally Syme and David Phillips who are our new Hon. Secretary
and Hon. Treasurer respectively. There is always room at the committee table for new faces, so if you would
like to be involved, please do get in touch. Finally, I’m sure you will join me in sending best wishes to the
incoming President, Melanie Lawlor (née McDowell)

The Annual Past Pupils’ Dinner will be held on Friday 4th October 2013, at the Fitzwilliam Lawn
Tennis Club (formerly the home of Epworth Hall), Appian Way, Dublin 6, commencing at 7.30pm.
The cost for dinner and entertainment will be €50 per person. As usual, dress code is informal
(jacket and tie).
The dinner is a most enjoyable event with past pupils & friends of the College meeting on an annual
basis to chat, socialise, be entertained, and to keep in touch with the school.
This year the classes of ’61 and ’63 will be “Gathering” at the dinner. Maybe you would like to
organise your own class reunion at the dinner? If so, please let us know as soon as possible so that
you can be accommodated.

LONDON RE-UNION LUNCHEON 2014
Saturday, 1st March 2014 – 12.45pm for 1.00 pm luncheon
The London Re-Union will be held at the Guoman Tower Hotel (formerly known as The Thistle Tower Hotel), St
Katherine’s Way on Saturday, 1st March next. Facilities for meeting friends before the luncheon will be
available in the Tower Suite from 11.30am: the cost for the luncheon will be €49.00 / Stg£44.00 per person.
The accommodation cost per night Thursday to Sunday inclusive will be Stg£65 per person sharing: Stg£100
per single room, including VAT and full English Breakfast. Any enquiries/changes should be made to Helen
Holland (+353 86 8835132): email [email protected]. As the hotel requires payment in advance for
the meal please return the completed form below with your remittance for lunch. Payment by Credit Card
will incur an additional charge of €1 per person towards the processing charge to the Union of 2.5% - we are
requesting payment by €uro cheque/draft or credit card rather than sterling cheque to reduce processing and
currency exchange charges which in 2013 exceeded €150.00 and contributed towards an overall loss for the
2013 event. We had retained the price at Stg£35 for the meal for the past three year although the cost of the
meal has risen 40% since 2010. The exchange rate applicable on the day will be applied to your payment. If
you provide us with a mobile or email contact details we will acknowledge your application. Payment for
accommodation should be made directly to the hotel on departure.
This re-union is always a most enjoyable event – past pupils of the college from all over the globe meeting up
