Why walking Works
Walking is a simple way to help you stay healthy.
Tired of traffic jams? Fed up with parking fees?
Want to feel healthy and happy? ...then ...walk it!

Trying to lose a few pounds? ...then walk it. A one mile brisk walk
(approx 20 mins) burns around 100 calories, about the same as a one mile run!
Walking it can also help reduce your chances of getting illness like heart
disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers in the future.

Even if you don’t live within walking distance of the town you could park outside the centre, or get off the bus earlier, and walk it the rest of the way.

It is recommended that we aim to walk 10,000 steps each day. Walking to town could
help towards achieving this, but you could also go for a walk in some of Calderdale’s
beautiful parks or countryside or join one of our local led health walks to maintain
good health.

Small changes,
big benefits
Try to think of other ways to fit more
walking into your daily life. You could:
• Walk the children to school, it’s good for them too,
• Use the stairs instead of taking the lift or escalator,
• Park & Stride, wherever you need to go why not park a bit
further away and walk the last bit of the journey,
• Join one of Calderdale’s walk it together led health walks, a great way to feel fitter and make new friends.
