Lunchroom Server – Thurs. 10:45 am-12:45 pm There’s still time to register your 8th or 9th grade student for our Washington, D.C. trip, April 29-May 4! Mr. Bittner has registration materials in his office, or you may register online at: www.etsi.ws. (Trip #2E49) We’ll be visiting the historical sites of Washington, D.C., as well as colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. Among the many stops are Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian complex, the Capitol Mall monuments, Ford’s Theatre, Arlington National Cemetery, the Holocaust Memorial Museum, and Jamestown. There is a group of parents who have some great fund-raising ideas and who can help with ideas and potential projects. In the know… As we have discussed the topic of digital usage, social media, and internet safety among staff, Mr. Villers shared a Christian-based website that offers 10 Commandments of Technology and Children. This short article contains several suggestions for establishing a healthy platform from which your student can explore the digital world. We encourage you to read and discuss these topics within your family. And before we leave cyber-world, it would seem prudent to discuss personal devices. According to one study by Common Sense Media the amount of children ages 0-8 having used mobile media has nearly doubled in the last two years, while their time on those devices has tripled. There is no going back. The digital labyrinth our tweens and teens navigate daily on their smart phones, iPods, and iPads is mind numbing. These hand-held devices are exponentially more powerful than the computers that powered the first lunar missions and the cyberworld they link to infinitely more dangerous. Yet, too often, as parents, we truly do not have the foggiest idea about the apps they are downloading and using on their phones. To that end, here is a Disney affiliated link to a recent article on the web that gives a rundown on the latest popular apps: http://www.babble.com/ mom/a-parents-guide-to-social-media-what-aretweens-and-teens-using-right-now/instagram-2/ Please remember: this article does not look at the apps through a Biblical worldview, however, the slideshow at the bottom of the article gives a quick rundown on some of the most popular current ones and provides an excellent starting point for you to customize your research based upon your individual student’s situation.
