Malahide win Juvenile Pennant
Our strategy was to give as many
boys as possible experience of
interclub competitive golf while
planning around holidays, which
was sometimes an issue. All
played their part along the way.

FOR CATERERS
Malahide Juvenile boys won the Fingal Junior Team Trophy and
associated pennant in August this year. The achievement was
marked on the night of the President’s Prize in the club when Captain
Fred Moran presented plaques to the members of the winning team.
The competition has been running
for many years over 8 weeks
during the summer holidays and
involves 16 clubs from North
Dublin, City and County.
in that week. In addition to the
main competition, there are
individual net and gross prizes
each week. The upper handicap
limit is 24 with no lower limit.
All of the outstanding golfers
produced in the area over the
past number of years have played
in this competition as juveniles.
This year’s Irish Amateur Open
Champion, Gavin Moynihan
participated in this event for 3 years.
Prior to that Niall Kearney and
Eoin Arthurs, both of whom have
and continue to have distinguished
golfing careers, represented their
clubs in the competition.
The Malahide boys had an
outstanding campaign, winning
on the first day in Portmarnock
and the final day in Beaverstown
with two 2nd place and three 3rd
place finishes in between to clinch
the title. Corrstown finished in
second place overall with Clontarf
in third position.
The format of the Fingal Junior
Team Trophy is 18 holes stableford
with four players representing
their club each week with the
total of the best three cards
determining the team score and
ultimately their finishing position
In total, 14 boys represented
Malahide over the 8 weeks of the
competition as follows;
Andrew Conlon
Sean Costello
Jamie Kennedy
Daniel Murphy
AJ McCabe
Fintan O’Connor
Philip Rusk
Ciaran Conway
Karl Kennedy
Marco Lupo
Conor Murray
Sam Nolan
Paul O’Sullivan
Conor Sutton
Malahide Golf Club Newsletter - Page 1
Special mention has to be made
of Daniel Murphy who won
two of the individual weekly
net prizes, firstly in Skerries with
47 points and then in Royal
Dublin with 40 points. Other
notable performances included
Karl Kennedy who won the
individual net prize on the final
day in Beaverstown with 44pts
and Conor Sutton who won the
individual gross on the same
day with 38pts gross. These were
some of the outstanding rounds
but there were many others and
every one of the 14 boys made
significant contributions to the
overall team success.
Two of our leading players in the
club namely Conor Sutton and
Andrew Conlon played towards
the latter stages of the event
when we were nervously defending
the substantial lead that we
had built up in the earlier rounds.
Both these lads showed great
commitment to the club at a
time when they were preparing
for the Leinster finals of the
Irish Senior Cup in which they
performed superbly.
Malahide had one previous win
in the history of this competition
and that was back in 2009.
Many congratulations to all on
this great achievement.

COURSE REPORT
6th Hole Red Course. Photo taken by Malahide Camera Club.
The summer has been one of the wettest on record but
has only caused minimum disruption by way of course
closure. The Ladies Captains Prize qualifying round was
affected and unfortunately it had to be abandoned.
The wet ground made golf very difficult with little or no
run on the ball. This resulted in lower stableford scores.
The good condition of the course throughout the summer
months is thanks mainly to our Course Superintendant,
Colm and his staff. In spite of horrific weather conditions
they pulled out all the stops to ensure that a successful
Philip Walton Pro-Am took place in June 2012.
The wet weather and lack of sunlight is the main reason
that moss has appeared on some greens. Treatment for
this condition will take place in September 2012.
Autumn hollow coring of the greens has begun and
the yellow course is already completed with the greens
recovering rapidly. The blue and red courses will be
hollow cored later this month.
The bunkers have been badly affected by the wet
weather with rain washing sand from the faces of some
and making the sand very compact in others. There
have been many reports of the non-raking of bunkers
by members and visitors after use. Non-raked bunkers
are very unfair to fellow golfers and provide a wrong
impression of the course to visitors.
The continued distribution of divot mix on the fairways
by members is evident and is of great benefit to the
golf course.
The over hanging branch, a feature of the 1st red fairway,
has been removed for safety reasons.

The Bridge Club
The Bridge Club started back on Monday 3rd of September with a
jovial wine and cheese reception followed by Bridge. It was
great to welcome back all our bridge friends, who all looked
so well after our sunny summer!!!
The evening was started with a minutes silence for the late
Elma Kelly, a valued member of our club, may she rest in peace.
In the course of the evening we celebrated the Birthday of
Lil Cassidy (four score and ten). What a wonderful Lady.
If that was not enough we also marked a special Wedding
Anniversary of Frank and Claire Coogan, which they
celebrated in August.
Thursday Morning Bridge will resume on the 4th October at
10am/12.00pm. This is to facilitate Improvers and those
returning to Bridge after an absence, we would be delighted
to see you all there.
Lastly, on behalf of all members and especially this year’s
committee, I would like to thank last year’s Captain Michael
Walsh for all his hard work and especially for drawing up
a blue print on the workings of the Bridge Club. He did a
superb job.
Thank you Michael.
Wishing you all a Happy and enjoyable year
The Malahide Golf Club Singers were back in full rehearsals in
early August and we were delighted to be asked to entertain
for our President Donal’s night on the Saturday 25th August.
It was a lovely evening with dinner, presentations to the
winners of the Presidents Prize to both the Ladies and Men.
Team manager Donal Hughes and our Juvenile boys, winners
of the Juvenile Boys Fingal League, presented a delighted
Captain Fred with his first pennant of the year!
The choir was in fine voice and Musical Director Jenny, who
travelled back from a wedding in west Cork that day, sang a
beautiful rendition with backing vocals from the choir of
‘Up To the Mountain’. She was highly complimented.
Our next performance will be in the ‘Mill Theatre’ in Dundrum
on the 15th September 2012 with Jenny. We will perform four
songs and are very excited to be venturing out of our comfort
zone of Malahide.
We will soon be rehearsing our new repertoire for the Christmas
Dinner in December.
Club Theatre
Club Theatre is coming to Malahide Golf club for two nights
only Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd November 2012.
With a mix of drama, comedy, and music it promises to be a
wonderful night’s entertainment.

PUTTING

The next thing you do is line
up the putter to the target.
Every shot in golf starts
with the proper approach.
Here you will see I am
behind the ball getting an
image of the Putt.
Your stance is slightly wider
than your shoulders.
6

The posture is very
important, your left eye
should be directly above
the ball, as you can see
in this photo.

The ball position is played
from a putter length from
your left heel.
Having got your line, you
now line up the ball to your
target using the line on the
golf ball.
In this photo, you can see
the grip with both the
thumbs on the center of
the putter shaft, using very
light grip pressure.

The putting stroke
is controlled by your
shoulders (there should be
no wrist action involved).
The putter swings back and
through the ball making
sure you accelerate the
putter towards the hole.
B
RULE OF GOLF ETIQUETTE
SLOW PLAY
How players can minimise round times:
• B
e aware of your position with regard to the group in front
and keep up with that group.
• If you feel that your group is losing ground, tell the other
players in your group
• If your group is behind, try to catch up.
• If you lose a clear hole and are delaying the group behind,
or if there is no group in front of you and you are delaying
the group behind, invite the group behind to play through.
Pace of Play
Slow play detracts from the enjoyment of the game
for many players.
There is a responsibility, therefore, on all players and
administrators to ensure that golf is played at a good pace,
and a pace appropriate to the course being played.
For ‘normal’ golf, it is important for administrators to set
targets for round times. There is not a ‘one size fits all’
model for round times, but it is important that the targets
are achievable without being too soft.
Two-ball rounds should take no more than 3 hours 10
minutes; three-balls should take no more than 3 hours 30
minutes, and four-balls no more than 3 hours 50 minutes.
If slow play has become an issue at your club, course or resort
then strong and decisive action should be taken to resolve
the problem. And as a general rule, try to keep up with the
group in front!
• B
e ready to play your shot. While exercising due
consideration for other players in your group, put your
glove on, check your yardage, pick your club and line up
your putt while others are playing.
• A
t the green, speed up your exit by positioning your bags
on the way to the next tee.
• M
ove off the green as soon as all players in your group
have holed out and mark scorecards at or on the way to
the next tee.
• P
lay a provisional ball if your ball may be lost outside a
hazard or out of bounds.
In Summary in order
to Keep Pace:
• Keep up with the group in front.
How administrators can minimise round times:
• If you lose a hole, call the group • D
o not overload the course by using short starting
intervals. When play is in two- balls, at least eight minutes
should be allowed between groups and in three or four
balls, at least 10 minutes should be given.
behind through.
• If possible, incorporate starter’s gaps throughout the
course of the day to allow for clearance of any delays that
have arisen.
• Be ready to play your shot when it’s your turn.
• T he rough for daily play should be of such a length so as to
avoid numerous lost balls.
• H
ole locations for daily play should not be too severe and
neither should the green speeds.
• Play a Provisional Ball.
• Limit practice swings to one.
• Position your bags on the way to the next Tee.
• Pick your line of putt while others are putting.
• Leave the green promptly and Mark the card
after you Tee off if it’s your honour.
• A
dvise players of the time that should be taken to play the
course and remind them of their obligations with regards
to pace of play, i.e. keep up with the group in front and
allow quicker groups to pass through.

Juvenile News
Juvenile Boys
News
After a busy summer of competition,
the Juvenile Boys had a successful year
with a superb win in the Fingal League
and the report of this great success
can be found on the cover page of the
magazine. The Boys also reached the
quarter finals of the Leinster under
15 Championships where, despite a
great performance on the day, lost a
very close battle 3-2 to Balbriggan.
Throughout this competition we used
a total of 10 players, which shows our
strength in depth in one of the most
important age groups for the future
of the Club. The players involved were
Daniel Murphy, Karl Kennedy, Sam
Nolan, Jamie Kennedy, Brian Whelan,
AJ McCabe, Robert Byrne, Harry Doyle,
Ciaran Conway, and Evan Gaffney. A
special thanks goes to Colin Sheils and
Leo Connolly who managed this team.
Colin and Leo are not long out of the
Juvenile Section themselves and did
a fantastic job with our under 15s in
their first attempt at management. It is
a credit to them that they were willing
to give up their time for the Club given
their college and work commitments.
Philip Smith won the Bob Mc
Adoo Junior Scratch Cup
with a score of 71
We held all our major competitions
over the summer months including the
Juvenile Captain Paul O’Sullivan’s Prize
which was won by Stephen Bradley,
our President Donal Lennon’s Prize
won by Daniel Murphy and our Captain
Fred Moran’s Prize to the Juveniles
which was won by Robert Byrne.
Congratulations to all the winners
throughout the summer; the only
disappointing aspect was being the
low turnout for competitions with only
an average of 50 out of 120 Juveniles
participating. We expect a significant
improvement in these numbers in the
coming year.
Juvenile Captain’s Day: Scott Porter,
Conor Murray, Juvenile Boy’s Captain
Paul O’Sullivan & Gavin Purcell.
In August we held the Juvenile Pro-Am
for the second year and this was again
a great success and enjoyed by all the
Juveniles. Sixteen teams took part in
the Regional Qualifying Round and two
Malahide teams made it through to
the Final to be held in St Helen’s Bay in
September. The winning team on the
day was Paul O Sullivan, Conor Murray
and Scott Porter (all Malahide) and Sam
Nolan, Matt Nolan and Alex Mannion
(Malahide) also qualified. Well done to
the qualifiers and the very best of luck
in the Final. A special thanks to John
and Michelle Murray for all their help in
organising this event.
Throughout the Summer the
GUI held the 4 Provincial Boys
Championships along with the Irish
Boys Championships and this year we
had three Juveniles competing in these
Championships namely Conor Sutton,
Andrew Conlon and Philip Smith. When
you consider the handicap required to
qualify for these events is normally 5
or less, to have three representatives
is fantastic for the future of Malahide
GC. Conor had great success in the
Connacht boys finishing runner-up,
which was a great achievement.
Andrew had a great run in Connacht,
Munster and Leinster making the cut
in all 3 events and finishing well up
the field. What is great for Malahide
golf club is the fact that we have
players not only taking part in these
Malahide Golf Club Newsletter - Page 6
Championships but also competing for
the major prizes and I have no doubt
that these three players along with
some new players from Malahide will
get very close to victory next year. It is
also excellent for the Juvenile Section of
the Club that Conor, Andrew and Philip
played a big role in this years Senior cup
team that reached the Leinster semifinal where the eventual winners, Castle
Golf Club, narrowly beat them.
As the season comes to an end,
the Juvenile Match play is at the
quarterfinal stages with the final being
played on the 6th of October along
with all the other club finals. A reminder
to all Juveniles that competitions will
be held during the mid-term break in
November and our Juvenile Captain’s
Dinner takes place on December 27th.
Please make every effort to support
these events.
Juvenile Captain’s Day: Ciaran
Conway,Jamie Kennedy, Daniel
Murphy & Brian Whelan.
Andrew Conlon won the Vice
Captain Bill’s prize with a score
of 43 pts and he was runner up in
the President Donal’s Prize

Juvenile GirlS
News
The Juvenile Girls did very well this year
coming 4th in the Fingal league after a
slow start they battled well and some
of the girls had great scores. Orla Mc
Kiernan had a great score of 45 points
in Sutton in one of the Fingal league
games. She lost an impressive number
of shots this year and is now playing
off a handicap of 23. Eleven of our girls
from cadets and Juveniles took part in
an ILGU day in Hollywood Lakes in 6, 9,
and 18 hole competitions and all went
home happy with prizes for all. Niamh
Purcell, our Girl’s Juvenile captain had
a good turnout for her day and a lot

OTHER NEWS
Senior Cup
Malahide’s Senior Cup Journey
started in June at Royal Dublin
Golf Club. Our first round match
was against St Anne’s and after
a slow start we eventually won
4-1. The next round we played
was against Howth again
winning by a 4-1 margin which
set up a difficult tie against
Skerries who had beaten
both The Island and the hosts
Royal Dublin in their previous
2 matches. The Team of Conor Sutton, Colin
Shiels, Gavin O’Connor, Philip Smith
and Paul O’Connor found themselves
in a difficult situation with 4 holes
to play. At this stage we had lost
Conor’s match, had won Gavin ‘s
game and we were 1 up in Paul’s
match. However, as Colin was 4 down
with 4 to play and Philip was 2 down
with 4 to play we looked like we were
going to lose out. But then came the
fight-back. This was typical of all the
players involved in this team. Firstly
Colin won 15 and 16 with birdies and
when Philip won 15 with a par and
16 with a birdie the whole match
had turned. Colin went on to win 17
and 18 with 2 brilliant pars’ to bring
his match down 19, which was such
a boost to the other matches. Philip
made par on 17 and 18 to win 1up,
which was a great performance
for a young man in his first Senior
Cup. While all this was going on
Paul’s match had gone back to all
square after 17. With the match now
2-1 in Malahide’s favour Colin was
now playing the 20th as Paul came
up 18 with a super drive and iron
followed by 2 great putts to secure
Malahide’s place in the Leinster
Quarter-Final for the first time in
over 10 years. The Leinster Finals
would take place over the week-end
of Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th
of August in Hermitage Golf Club
and a lot of golf had been played
since Royal Dublin. After a summer
of fantastic golf, young Andrew
Conlon came through to claim his
place on the team for the QuarterFinal match against Ardee Golf
Club. Andrew joined Conor, Gavin,
Philip and Paul and what a debut
he experienced. Playing at number
2 in his first Senior Cup match he
was up against Eugene Smith who
had played for Leinster in this year’s
Interprovincial Championships and
had also reached the semi-final of
the south of Ireland. However, this
didn’t faze the 16 year old at all as he
powered his way to a 5&4 victory, an
outstanding performance. Having
lost match 4 (Philip), it was 1-1 with
Gavin all flat playing 18 only to lose
out to a birdie and when Paul closed
out his match by 2 holes it was left to
another young player Conor Sutton
to try to get us the Leinster Semi-final.
Conor had a tough match going 1
up playing the last but lost the 18th
hole resulting in the tie going to
extra holes. After 19 and 20 were
halved in par, Conor lost his drive to
the right on the 21st hole and, with
his opponent in good shape, faced
a difficult second shot from behind
the trees. Conor decided to rely on
his now famous short game, chipped
out and duly got up and down from
80 yards to halve the hole and send
the match down the 22nd hole.
Under extreme pressure Conor hit
the par 3 green but was left with a
tricky 2 putt on lightning- fast greens
to win his match, but true to form
he stepped up to the mark and sunk
a slippery down-hill three-footer to
bring Malahide to their first Senior
Cup Semi-Final in years.
We now
faced The Castle and David Mooney
was brought in to replace Philip. We
had a slow start in the match and by
the time we had reached the 13th
hole Gavin and Andrew were both 4
down, David 3 down, Conor 2 down
and ‘Mr. Consistency’ Paul 1 up.

Things looked very bleak but then
the comeback started again. Firstly
Gavin won 14 and 15 to go back to
2 down, Andrew won 14,15,16 to
go 1 down and Conor won 14 to go
to 1 down and suddenly it was all
to play for again. Unfortunately this
time we had left ourselves with too
much to do and could not turn it
around, Gavin losing 2&1, David 4&3
and Conor 2&1 with Paul of course 2
up with 2 to play and Andrew with
a putt on 19 to win his match. The
Castle went on to win the Leinster
title defeating Portmarnock in the
final on Sunday.
This was a great performance from
a great bunch of Lads all of whom
have been members of Malahide
GC since they were 10 years old,
which is something we should be
very proud of in today’s golf. I would
like to mention Paul O’ Connor for
his quiet, reliable performance for
the team unbeaten in 5 matches,
Gavin O’Connor for his drive
and enthusiasm and helping the
younger players, Alyn Hogan and Lar
Craddock who didn’t play but were
there as subs for all the matches,
Andrew Keating and John Murray
my assistant managers, Captain Fred
Moran for his support throughout the
year and all the members who came
out to Royal Dublin and Hermitage
to support the team. Finally a special
mention to Colin Shiels the young
man who kept the whole dream
alive with his comeback in Royal
Dublin, and who put the team first
in Hermitage when he felt he wasn’t
playing well enough to feature on
the day but he was there at 7.30am
to caddie for the player who replaced
him Andrew Conlon. The fantastic
team spirit and ‘Can Do’ attitude is
what makes this all worthwhile, and
hopefully we can now go on and
build on this wonderful performance.
Darragh Smith,
Team Manager.

ILGU Private Homecare East Leinster District Finals
Our Golf Course, Clubhouse, and
environs really looked at their best
on Sunday, 2nd September when
we hosted the ILGU East Leinster

drinking outdoors.
The day was a huge success and all the
visiting Clubs were very complimentary
regarding the welcome they received
from the time they arrived at the
entrance to our Club.
Congratulations to Mary White,
our event coordinator and her
enthusiastic and committed support
team, ladies and men, who through
their very professional organisation
of the day, made us feel very proud
to be Captains of Malahide Golf Club.

Our thanks to Colm and his course
staff who had the golf course in
superb condition for the event.
It is a big sacrifice to give up our
Course on a summer Sunday to
facilitate an event like this but we
have always tried to be supportive
of the ILGU and the GUI when asked
to accommodate major Tournaments
and we very much appreciate our
members continued support for
this approach.
We thank President Donal and the
Captains Liz and Fred.
