Spring 2016 Bats in the Park Visitors to the Canning River Regional Park may have no ced some small boxes a ached to trees on the Ferndale side of the river just over the Weir bridge. Did you know these boxes are for bats and that bats have actually taken up residence in them? What are bats? Bats are the only mammal that can fly. They are warm blooded and have live babies that are fed on milk just like us. No one is sure how many species of bats live in the Canning River Region‐
al Park .The Canning River Regional Park volunteers are currently working on a bat project which involves collec ng and analysing data bat record‐
ings and educa on. So far they have discovered there are at least 4 and possibly 5 species of bat found in the park. All of these species are micro bats which mainly eat insects. The volun‐
teers have been working plan ng understory shrubs which provide food source for insects which are then eaten by bats. If you would like to find out more about bats a range of fact sheets can be found at h p://ausbata.org.au/#/bat‐fact‐packa/4562894228 Your Observa ons Help Turtle Watch Turtles have been seen recently on roads, paths and in gardens. Between September and January each year, the females leave the water in search of suitable sandy soils in which to lay their eggs. Ideal nes ng sites for Oblong Turtles include na ve vegeta on remnants and parks and gardens. The turtles face danger trying to nego ate roads, kerbs and long grass. They are also at risk from predators such as foxes, ravens, cats and dogs. Hatchlings are at risk as they make their way to water a er hatching. If you see any turtles, you can help them by observing them and repor ng your sigh ng to the Turtle Watch Hotline on the numbers be‐
