As a result, the 2012 vintage offers exceptional amplitude and depth. The opulent, layered palate is structured by extremely refined tannins and prolonged by characteristic minerality, the hallmarks of Cabernet from the Eisele Vineyard. "Dense and earthy, with a submerged core of rich blackberry, currant, anise and sage flavors. The dusty, loamy earth character lends balance and definition. Ends with cedary tannins and good length. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.” This radiant wine combines classic mountain structure and concentration with graceful purity and poise. The aromas reveal blackberry, dark cherry and crème de cassis, along with notes of oak spice, violets and anise. The palate is rich and expansive, with layers of dark berry, espresso and chocolate underscored by silky tannins that carry through to a lingering, almost liqueur-like finish. This wine has a very rich, ripe, red fruit character with underlying power and concentration. The tannins are sweet and velvety and overall showing beautiful balance and finesse. The lengthy finish shows off the multiple layered structure and incredible depth of the wine. The final blend consists of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon (comprised of seven Cabernet clones) with 1% of each Petit Verdot and Merlot. Once again the number of cases is quite small, just short of 250 of the 2010 Checkerboard. Exhibiting a classic Cabernet Sauvignon varietal profile from its cool, marine-influenced Mount Veeder origins, this exceptional vintage provides alluring aromatics of black cherry, incense and Tuscan leather intermingling with saturated dark fruits. A dense, savory, earthbound entry transitions seamlessly into flavors of blackberry pie and bittersweet cocoa with notes of cinnamon and sage. Even at a youthful stage, ripe and refined tannins indicate the potential for immediate as well as long term gratification. A long, cascading finish reveals a beautifully composed wine with a lifted quality that has become synonymous with Darius II. The perfect 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan spent 32 months in French oak prior to being bottled unfiltered. It can be noted for its inky bluish-purple color, extraordinary fragrance of white flowers, crème de cassis, blackberry and graphite. This vineyard has a lot of clay in it that seems to provide a silkiness to the tannins. This is a beautifully balanced, full-throttle and highly extracted wine with no hard edges and a long finish. The fruit character is still vibrant and intense, despite the 32 months of oak age. 100 points from Wine Advocate. Michael Mondavi was the head winemaker for Robert Mondavi winery in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Michael now resides at the Animo vineyard (Italian for ‘soul’) where he believes the rocky, volcanic soil lends his wines power and layered complexity. Each bottle has undergone 22 months in French Oak, picking up beautiful notes of vanilla and caramel. Private Collection Rubicon Estate Rutherford, Napa Valley, CA 2008 495 Scarecrow Rutherford, Napa Valley, CA 2013 950 Spring Mountain Estate Napa Valley, CA 2001 295 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars “FAY” Napa Valley, CA 2012 330 Trefethen “HaLo” Oak Knoll, Napa Valley, CA 2010 495 Velvet Glove McLaren Vale, Australia 2014 450 Vineyard 29 “Aida Estate” Napa Valley, CA 2006 395 ZD Napa Valley, CA 2007 275 It’s all in the name. What was once Niebaum-Coppola was renamed as Rubicon. Current vintages have reclaimed the Inglenook mantle. The Inglenook legacy stretches back to 1879 when Gustav Niebaum, a Finnish sea captain, came to Rutherford with the goal of building a winery to rival the best in France. History would indicate that he succeeded. Try for yourself! Crafted from the oldest, most balanced and most intensely flavorful Cabernet lots grown on the J. J. Cohn Estate, this impressive wine shows dark aromas of spiced plums, blackberries, mocha and cassis. Its dark complexity is equally evident on the palate, where the wine is at once refreshing and somewhat mysterious. The layers of complex flavors reveal themselves with time in the glass, shifting and swirling between bright fruit and dark vanilla/caramel tones. The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon (actually 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot) displays chocolate espresso notes along with some damp earth and black currants in a medium-bodied, drinkable style that has shed most of its tannin. The wine has a nice lushness, and the finish is very good, with no hard edges. – Robert Parker Elegant and inviting with a nose of violet, cinnamon, vanilla clove and boysenberry that brings to mind a slice of dark berry pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The wine has a silky, velvety texture from the fine tannins and rich fruit core that allows the wine to flow over the midpalate and merge with the signature bright red cherry notes of the vineyard. While not bold in character, the 2012 FAY has great persistence and length, promising long life. HaLo sings of its terroir. Aromas of the vineyard are intoxicating with highlights of blackberries and bay leaf. The perfume from the oak forest that surrounds the vineyard invites the palate and delivers complex and deep flavors of tobacco. The wine has a rich and velvety texture. Bold and triumphant on the palate, the flavors are robust and spicy with dark chocolate, rich cherries and a finish that goes on and on. Deep dark purple in color, Velvet Glove indulges your senses with fresh berries, plum, vanilla, licorice and hints of clove. Intense chocolate layers, accompanied with luscious cherry and blackberry fruits result in a rich and opulent mouthfeel. With beautiful balance and finesse, its finely poised tannins and concentrated flavours shine radiantly long after the first sip. Prepare to be immediately captivated by this powerful wine’s deep aromas of shaved cocoa, black cassis and black cherries. On the palate, masculine notes of tar, licorice and burning embers add to this wine’s power and density, while sweet melted chocolate, caramel and warm stone provide plenty of finesse and juiciness. Firm tannins carry this wine through a seemingly endless finish. Classic cassis, red plum and blackberry make up the core of dense ripe fruit in this Cabernet Sauvignon. Subtle hints of toasted nuts, anise, clove and sweet vanilla add to the complexity. Finally, soft, velvety tannins envelop and carry the fruit to an incredibly long finish.
