Frames Kelley’s frames are of superior quality. All of our frames are locked at all four corners and feature a heavy, 19” top bar. Frames nail up square and tight and should remain that way for years of hard use. When selecting complete hives or kits, Kelley’s gives you the opportunity to choose the frame style you prefer. Style D N Description D Style: “D” style frames have a removable wedge (nailed back in place) in the top bar and a two-piece bottom bar. The end bars measure 3/8” thick with pre-drilled holes for use with support pins or for cross-wiring. The bottom of the sheet of foundation is inserted through the two pieces of the bottom bar, and then pulled back up to the shoulder that was created by removing the wedge. The wedge is then nailed back in place over the hooks. N Style: “N” style frames were invented at Kelley’s and have caught on across the country. This frame has a top bar with a slot running the length of it and a grooved bottom bar. The end bars are ½” thick with grooves running length of them and also pre-drilled for support pins or cross-wiring. This frame is designed for wax foundation with or without wires. The foundation is loaded from the top and is supported by the end bar and bottom bar grooves. It is recommended to use some type of horizontal support for the wax (support pins or crosswiring) for deep frames. S Style: “S” style frames have a removable wedge (nailed back in place) in the top bar and a solid bottom bar. The end bars measure 3/8” thick with pre-drilled holes for use with support pins or crosswiring. This frame is designed for wired foundation with hooks. Some customers have a preference for the solid bottom bar and choose to melt wax to adhere the foundation to the bottom bar. S F F Style: “F” style frames (also invented at Kelley’s) require no foundation. The bottom of the top bar has been beveled to provide a starting place for the bees to draw their own foundation. The end bars measure 3/8” thick with pre-drilled holes. It is suggested that small amount of liquid beeswax be applied to the bevel to encourage the bees to start here. SG SG Style: “SG” style frames have a removable wedge (nailed back in place) in the top bar and a grooved bottom bar. The end bars measure 3/8” thick with pre-drilled holes for use with support pins or crosswiring. This frame is designed for wired wax foundation with hooks.
