Warm up 1. Turn your homework into the drawer.
2. Research two things...
-something that is represented by a very small number
-something that is represented by a very large number
Be ready to share the two things and the numbers that represent
them.

Multiplication in Scientific Notation
(2.1 x 108) (3.2 x 104)
1. Multiply the rational numbers together.
2.1 x 3.2
2. Keep the "x 10" and add the exponents together to get the
new power of 10.
8+4
3. Make sure your answer is in scientific notation. Adjust if
necessary.

What happens if the coefficient is more than 10?

Example: (6 x 10 ) (4 x 10 ) = 24 x 10
For each place you move the decimal to the left, the exponent will be increased by
one power of ten. For each place you move the decimal to the right, the exponent
will be decreased by one power of ten.

(6 x 10 ) (4 x 10 ) = 24 x 10 = 2.4 x 10

Dividing Scientific Notation
1. Divide the rational numbers.
2. Keep the same base (10) and subtract the exponents of 10.
3. Check to make sure that the resulting number is still in
scientific notation. Make an adjustment if necessary.
