silas marner - The Production Exchange

is delighted to offer a new middle scale touring production for spring 2015. SILAS MARNER by GEORGE ELIOT in a new adaptation by TIM LUSCOMBE directed by COLIN BLUMENAU Silas is framed for stealing the church funds. Proclaimed guilty, and
heartbroken after his fiancée's rejection of him, he leaves his home behind,
and heads south to the Midlands. He lives as a linen weaver and a recluse,
hoarding the gold coins he earns, only to have them stolen from him. One
night, a child, abandoned by her dying, opium-addicted mother in the snow,
wanders into Silas' house. Deciding to keep the child, his life completely
alters. He’s been robbed of his gold, but it’s returned to him in the form of
golden-haired Eppie. However, a fight for paternity ensues between the rich
local landowner and Silas when Eppie grows to be a teenager. She chooses
Silas over wealth and privilege, and helps him integrate into village society.
Never able to clear up the details of the initial robbery, caring for Eppie
provides joy for her, for Silas and everyone in the village. The strong realism
of George Eliot’s third novel results in a sophisticated examination of religion,
class and of one man’s value and morality.
