Birthday Buffet. . . for a
When a party date means that you're the hostess, you want your party to be something
special. Food that tastes good and looks terrific will help. All kinds of parties — afterthe-game, open house, a dance, or club meeting, require advance planning. Prepare
the food ahead of time and think carefully about the way you'll serve it. With only
brief last-minute touches necessary, you'll be free to have fun with your guests.
If you have learned the secret of serving from a punch bowl into pretty paper cups,
you know that it saves time and avoids clutter. Punches for all kinds of parties can
be made from the simple basic patterns below. You haven't a punch bowl? For a
surprisingly easy answer to that problem, see suggestions on last page of folder.
milk punch pattern

Pour milk into chilled punch bowl. Add 1 quart of the ice cream, stir until almost
melted. Mix in flavorings or fruit. Float remaining ice cream on top of punch by big
spoonfuls or scoops. Serve at once. Makes about 4 quarts, or 32 punch-cup size servings.

Boil sugar and 4 cups water to dissolve sugar, cool. Add fruit juice and remaining
water, chill. Just before serving, pour into chilled punch bowl. Add ginger ale. Top with
scoops or spoonfuls of sherbet. Makes about 6 quarts, or 48 punch-cup size servings.

New Year's Party
confetti punch Make Fruit Punch Pattern with 2 cups orange
juice (6 oranges), A cup lemon juice (3 lemons), and VA cups
pineapple juice. Chill punch well, pour into punch bowl. Add 1
quart chilled ginger ale. Float scoops of lemon sherbet on punch,
dot sherbet with varicolored, finely cut gumdrops to match your
confetti color scheme. Serve with . . .
cheese ball Mash one 8-ounce and one 3-ounce package cream
cheese and 2 ounces Blue cheese until smooth. Mix with 2 tablespoons chopped onion, blending well with a fork. Shape into a
ball and chill to blend flavors. Just before serving, roll in chopped
pecans or walnuts, top with a cherry and sprig of parsley. Serve
on tray with crackers. Serves 8 to 10. Make two balls if needed.
Valentine's Party
pink and white cherry punch Use Milk Punch Pattern, add YA
teaspoon almond extract and XA cup maraschino cherry syrup to
chilled milk. Use cherry vanilla ice cream or vanilla ice cream and
1 cup chopped maraschino cherries. Serve with heart shaped butter
cookies sprinkled with red sugar.

Trim crusts from bread and arrange 6 slices in bottom of a 12 x 7-inch baking dish.
Cover with cheese and tuna, then with remaining bread. Beat eggs, add all remaining
ingredients. Pour over bread. Let stand in refrigerator at least 1 hour. About 1 hour
before serving time, put in a moderately slow oven, 325° F. and bake 1 hour. Serves
6 to 8. (Cooked or canned chicken or flaked crab meat can be used instead of tuna.)
t a n g y s a l a d mold
Dissolve 1 package lime-flavored gelatin in 1 cup hot water, add
1 cup pineapple syrup, 3 tablespoons vinegar, Yi teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon each,
grated onion and horseradish. Chill until syrupy, fold in 13^ cups drained, crushed
pineapple (No. 2 can) and A cup chopped celery. Chill in 1-quart mold until firm. 8
servings. Serve with dressing made of equal parts, whipped cream and mayonaise.
make-your-own sundaes
Center a tray with big bowl of vanilla ice cream,
surround with small bowls of your choice of assorted toppings, such as, frozen strawberries, chocolate syrup, chopped nuts, coconut, crushed peppermint stick.
May Dance or Graduation Party
pineapple lime punch Use Fruit Punch Pattern, with 5 cups pineapple juice, 1 cup
lemon juice. Just before serving, add ginger ale and float scoops of lime sherbet and
2 cups whole strawberries on top of punch. Serve with . . .
coconut macaroons Beat 2 egg whites until frothy, sprinkle with A teaspoon salt
and beat until stiff. Slowly beat in 1 cup sugar and A teaspoon almond extract. Fold
in 1 cup shredded coconut and 2 cups cornflakes. Drop from teaspoon on greased
baking sheets. Bake in moderate oven, 350° F., for 15 to 20 minutes. Place pan on
damp cloth and remove cookies immediately with spatula or knife. Makes about 3 dozen.

brownies
Use a brownie mix, top brownie squares with vanilla ice cream.
cinnamon toast If available, use unsliced raisin bread. Slice A to 1 inch thick.
Toast in preheated broiler. Spread generously with butter and sprinkle with mixture
of cinnamon and sugar. Return to broiler briefly to melt topping, watch carefully.
sandwich bar Collect the makings of your crowd's favorite sandwiches, and let them
design their own. Provide plenty of softened butter, a variety of breads, lettuce,
catsup, mustard, pickles, and mayonnaise. Set out the toaster, paper plates, cups,
napkins, and a pitcher of milk. Add your choices of the following: Plate of cheeses —
Cheddar, Swiss, Blue and cream; bologna, cold ham, salami, can of sardines; crisp
fried bacon, sliced tomatoes; peanut butter, sliced hard-cooked eggs.

Make mixture in advance, cover, refrigerate. Reheat before serving.

1 large onion, minced
2 teaspoons salt
^ teaspoon pepper

Cook meat, onion, salt, and pepper, stirring with fork, until meat loses its red color.
Blend in flour. Add 2Y* cups water, then Worcestershire and catsup. Simmer, stirring
occasionally, 15 to 20 minutes. Serve in toasted, buttered buns. Makes 16 servings.
(If a hotter flavor is desired, add A teaspoon chili powder.)
relishes Prepare vegetables in advance, place in a bowl of ice water and refrigerate.
For serving, drain well and arrange on a tray or in a big wooden salad bowl,
cheese dip Mix together 3 cups creamed cottage cheese, mashed or sieved, 2 tablespoons milk, 2 teaspoons grated onion, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, and salt
and pepper to taste. Chill before serving. Serve as a dip for potato chips. Makes 3 cups,
dessert Serve cookies made from a chocolate chip cookie mix, and more milk.
Halloween Party
How To Make Punch Bowls
spicy milk punch Use the Milk Punch Pattern. Mix 4 teaspoons
cinnamon, 2 teaspoons nutmeg, A teaspoon salt, and 2 teaspoons
vanilla extract with the chilled milk. Add vanilla ice cream. After
pouring punch in bowl, sprinkle with A cup grated orange rind.
Put a stick-cinnamon stirrer in each cup. Serve with doughnuts
and red apples.
Serving from a punch bowl is the easiest and smoothest way to dispense party beverages. A punch bowl is easy to make from any container large enough to hold 1 or 2
servings for each guest. The bowl can be beautiful or funny in keeping with your party.
Christmas Dance or Tree-Trimming Party . . .
Make a pretty punch bowl from the largest mixing bowl, salad
bowl, or tureen you can find. Cover the outside with aluminum
foil to make a silver bowl. Attach flowers or ivy to the outside
with tape. For Christmas, tie a wide red ribbon around the bowl,
fasten holly or pine in the bow. Use gay paper cups.

For informal parties, serve punch from a shiny bucket. Tie your
school colors on the handle. This one also doubles for Halloween, with black and orange ribbons. The biggest size paper
" t u b s " , used as ice cube containers or freezing cartons, make
inexpensive and convenient punch bowls. These can be decorated with colored paper and pasted cutouts to carry out your
party theme. Choose paper cups with similar colors.
A summer punch bowl can be made from a large watermelon.
Cut off the top and hollow out inside. Cut a thin slice from the
bottom to make melon set firmly. Notch or scallop edges of top
for a decorative effect. Use green and white paper cups.
cheese puffs Cream lA cup butter with 2 cups shredded American
cheese. Sift together and mix in well: 1 cup sifted flour, A teaspoon salt, 34 teaspoon paprika. Shape in 1-inch balls. Freeze on
baking sheet, or chill until needed. Bake at 350° F. about 15 minutes or until puffed and browned. Serve hot. Makes about 30 puffs.
Punch ladles —to serve punch, use a gravy ladle or a kitchen
ladle with the handle wrapped in colored ribbon or foil. From
the water bucket punch " b o w l , " serve with tin dipper or cup.

add sparkling water and float scoops of lemon or lime sherbet on top.
candy cane eggnog Beat 4 egg yolks, add 2 tablespoons sugar,
4 cups cold milk, and a few drops of peppermint extract. Beat 2
egg whites stiff, beat in 2 tablespoons sugar. Gradualjy add the
milk mixture. Pour into punch bowl. Serve very cold, in cups with
small candy canes for stirring rods. Serves 4 to 6. (Can also be
made with dairy eggnog).
