Did You Know?
Have you ever heard
of a “ton of money?”
Ever wonder how much
money is actually in a
ton? Well it depends on
the kind of money you
are weighing. Let’s
look at a “ton” of dollar
bills.
One ton equals 2,000
pounds. A dollar bill
weighs one gram.
There are about 454
grams in a pound. So a
“ton” of dollar bills
would be worth
$908,000!

sister, Kelly.
Easy Ways to Save
Try these money-saving ideas and you could save big bucks in just a few months!
•
Go to the library and check out books and videos for free. One book and one
video a month could have you more than $120 a year.
•
Look for coupons for your favorite candy or gum. A couple of coupons a week
could save you $52 a year.
•
Share video games with your friends instead of buying new ones. Just one
game you don’t buy could save you $50!
And what should you do with the money you save? Whatever you want! But be
sure to put some in your Long John Savers Kids Club account, too, and watch your
money grow!

A Smart Shopper Tip
shirt. Suddenly you see a cute pair of shoes and you
buy them. On the way home you realize you’ve spent
almost half the money you’d saved for the iPod!
Do you ever go shopping and find
yourself buying things you don’t
really want? That’s called impulse
buying, and it happens to the best
of us.
Sometimes we get distracted by things at the store
that look good or we feel left out when our friends are
buying new stuff, so we buy things just to buy them.
To save yourself from impulse shopping, set a
spending limit before you leave the house. Decide
how much money you can spend and leave the rest at
home so you won’t be tempted. Be realistic. Sometimes it’s hard to buy nothing at all when everyone
else is, but be sure to keep your goal in mind. After
all, which do you want more — the iPod or the shoes?
Let’s say you’ve been saving your
money to buy an iPod Shuffle.
You’ve almost saved enough when your friend asks
you to go shopping with her and her mom. At the mall
your friend buys a new CD, a bracelet and a new

Safety RULES on the Internet
•
Do not open emails from strangers. Sometimes
people send viruses that can crash your
computer.
Check with an adult before downloading
software. Most are safe for your computer, but
others are not.
Never give out any personal information — like
your name, address or phone number — or
send pictures of yourself without your parent’s
permission.
•
If a website or email makes you feel uncomfortable, close it right away.
•
If a warning box pops up, ask you mom or dad
for help.
•
Test your parents about internet safety. Ask
them if they know how to keep themselves and
you safe online.
