Citrus College Supports Proposition 1D
Contributed by the Citrus College Board of Trustees
California's schools, community colleges, and public universities are facing a tremendous need for classroom
construction, restoration and earthquake retrofitting.
Enrollment growth and new technologies place everincreasing demands on aging facilities.
Proposition 1D would build nearly 10,000 new classrooms and renovate 31,000 more. It would provide modern facilities for science, technology and career education. Proposition 1D is not a tax, but will be paid for from the
state's general fund. It has strict accountability measures and makes misuse of funds
a crime.
Citrus College is currently partnering with our local school districts to help them prepare their students for college success. Proposition 1D will partially fund a new
Student Services Building for Citrus College, which will house such vital services as
counseling, admissions and financial aid, to assist students as they transition to college and work to achieve their dreams.
More than $35 billion per year is contributed to California's economy through our three
systems of higher education. Citrus College supports Proposition 1D. It will ensure
our educational institutions have the facilities necessary to sustain our economy and
quality of life.
New Director of Institutional Reseach Hired
South Pasadena resident Dr. Lan Hao has been named the new
Director of Institutional Research at Citrus College. Hao comes to
Citrus College from Los Angeles Trade Technical College, where
she worked as an institutional researcher for nearly a year. She
has also worked at the University of Southern California as a
research assistant. In addition, Hao worked as a project specialist
at the Foreign Affairs Office at Tsinghua University in Beijing
before coming to the United States. Hao, who holds a Ph.D. in
higher education from the University of Southern California, will have a variety of
duties in her new position.
"I am responsible for institutional research, which includes the development and
dissemination of analytical data related to academic, student, administrative, and
development programs," she said. "I am also responsible for the development
and dissemination of data supportive of strategic planning, accreditation, enrollment trends, and required state and federal reports, etc." The married mother of
one officially joined the Citrus College family on October 18.

Veterans Day Celebration
Join Citrus College in honoring the men and women who
have honorably served in
our nation's military. In
observance of Veterans
Day, the campus will host a
special program to thank
veterans and their families
for the sacrifices they have
made for our country.
"A Salute to Veterans" will be held on Thursday,
November 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Citrus
College Campus Center Quad. The program will
include the singing of the national anthem, a color
guard presentation, 21-gun salute by a rifle team,
the playing of "Taps" by a military bugler, and a
keynote address by Juventino Gomez, a veteran
and senior deputy for L.A. County Supervisor
Michael Antonovich.
As part of the celebration, a World War II jeep, a
World War II command car, and a United States
Army Humvee will also be on display.
Refreshments, courtesy of the Citrus College
Foundation, will be served.
For more information about "A Salute to Veterans"
or the Citrus College Veteran's Fund, contact Dr.
Bruce Solheim at (626) 852-8096.
Dia De Los Muertos Event
Despite its ominous-sounding
translation, Dia De Los Muertos
(or Day of the Dead) is actually a
celebratory occasion. Now, Citrus
College is joining the festivities.
This ancient holiday, during which
Mexican families remember their
deceased loved ones and celebrate the continuity of life, will be
observed on campus Thursday,
November 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m
outside of the Hayden Memorial
Library.
"It is not a morbid occasion but a celebration of life," said
Martha McDonald, director of Citrus College's Extended
Opportunities Programs and Services (EOP&S) and
CalWORKs departments, and chair of the college's
Latina Leadership Network (LLN). "Citrus is holding this
event because it helps promote the importance of learning, appreciating, and enjoying the multicultural world in
which we live."
As part of the celebration, there will be a performance
by Mariachi de Azusa, a historical overview of the holiday, and examples of family altar and an art exhibit will
be on display. Tamales and pan dulce will be available
for purchase. For more information, call (626) 914-8556.
