Harold Clark will make a special presentation
on historical flags of the United States. He became
interested in flags 15 years ago aer placing a flagpole in his front yard. Shortly aer he received his
great grandmother’s 48 star American Flag from a
relative which she flew in her yard every July 4th
and 24th until she died. is sparked an interest
not only in early American flags, but also how the
national emblem evolved over the years.
He has collected both reproductions and originals, and has studied extensively the evolution of
the Flag. His presentation for the evening will include several flags in chronological order of how
the Flag has become what it is today. ough not
a true vexillologist (flag expert), he is happy to
share his interest and collections with those willing to listen.
Elder Bud Wood
began his speech by
explaining his first
connection with
Utah from his previous home in California. He came to
BYU and became
Pres. Kirk Gundersen and Elder Wood involved
in the
Church culture that led to his conversion, and his
ultimate involvement in computers and family
history.
e first half of his presentation was a review
of the evolution of Church family history work
from the Nauvoo period of baptisms in the Mississippi River to the latest high technical programs. Highlights of his recital of dates and events
were:
● 1840-Mississippi River baptisms began,
but ended in confusion until the temple
was partly completed.
● 1877-not until some ordinances for the dead
began in the St. George Temple. Names then

e rest of the presentation was a demonstration of the uses of the latest version of the FS/Tree
program with all its features including adding
photos, stories and special data about individual
records. He indicated that work was being done to
allow members to print out their own temple cards
without using the F.O.R. form. All in attendance
were amazed at the flexibility of the newest digital
resources.
