He “fiddled his way” before a recent chapter meeting and impressed us with his rapid style of musical performance. Memories of the June Meeting This Is The Place Mormon Pioneer Monument, July 24, 1847 July Meeting Tony Tidwell, and his wife Kathy, have organized the SUP Mills Picnic. It will be held at the Canyon Rim Park Annual Picnic (east pavilion), located at 3100 South and 3075 East. Enter from Grace St. (See directional map on the back page.) Dinner price is the usual $15 per plate. Harold Clark will make a special presentation on historical flags of the United States. He became interested in flags 15 years ago aer placing a flagpole in his front yard. Shortly aer he received his great grandmother’s 48 star American Flag from a relative which she flew in her yard every July 4th and 24th until she died. is sparked an interest not only in early American flags, but also how the national emblem evolved over the years. He has collected both reproductions and originals, and has studied extensively the evolution of the Flag. His presentation for the evening will include several flags in chronological order of how the Flag has become what it is today. ough not a true vexillologist (flag expert), he is happy to share his interest and collections with those willing to listen. Elder Bud Wood began his speech by explaining his first connection with Utah from his previous home in California. He came to BYU and became Pres. Kirk Gundersen and Elder Wood involved in the Church culture that led to his conversion, and his ultimate involvement in computers and family history. e first half of his presentation was a review of the evolution of Church family history work from the Nauvoo period of baptisms in the Mississippi River to the latest high technical programs. Highlights of his recital of dates and events were: ● 1840-Mississippi River baptisms began, but ended in confusion until the temple was partly completed. ● 1877-not until some ordinances for the dead began in the St. George Temple. Names then were recorded on paper. ● 1893-the families were sealed and organized onto pedigree groups. ● 1894-the second newest American Genealogical Society was formed. ● 1938-worldwide micro-filming was begun. ● 1969-International Genealogical Index was created (IGI). ● 1977-the personal home computer was invented. Continued on back page. 1979-Ancestral File created as first digitized data base. ● 1981-first personal computer created. ● 1983-Church created Personal Ancestral File. ● 1984-Ancestral Quest Bud Wood created to replace PAF. 1987-Legacy program was created. 1988-AF published and made available. 1999-35 million names in data base. Pedigree Resource File created. 2005-President Gordon Hinckley wanted to eliminate duplicates. 2011-first family Delicious SUP Meeting Dinner search web site. 2007-new Family Search program. 2009-sources added to program. 2012-the PRF was discontinued. Family Search/Tree was made available. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● e rest of the presentation was a demonstration of the uses of the latest version of the FS/Tree program with all its features including adding photos, stories and special data about individual records. He indicated that work was being done to allow members to print out their own temple cards without using the F.O.R. form. All in attendance were amazed at the flexibility of the newest digital resources.
