IDE303 ENGLISH POETRY- I (4+0+4) ECTS: 6 3rd Year Fall Semester Year / Semester Compulsory Status English Language and Literature Department None Prerequisite/ Recommended Theoretical 56 hours, 4 hours per week Form of Teaching Lecturer None Co-lecturer English Language of Instruction Objectives of the Course This course is intended to teach methods of reading and analysing poems, to explain features and structure of poetry with the general techniques used, to analyse Neoclassical poets, the characteristics of the Romantic period, the freshness that Romantic poets brought and the reflection of the Romantic thought on the poetry of the period. Learning Outcomes CTPO TOA LO- 1: The students learn the general techniques and structures used in poetry 4,7 1 and methods of analysing poems. LO- 2: They learn about the birth and development of the Neoclassical period 1,4,10 1 and its effect on English poetry. LO- 3: They examine the characteristics of the Romantic period. 1,4,10 1 LO- 4: They can analyse the innovations in poetry in the Romantic period. 7,8,10 1 LO- 5: They can analyse Romantic poetry by comparing it with Neoclassical 7,8,10 1 poems. Contents of the Course In this course, firstly the Neoclassical period, the way of thinking in this period and its reflections on the literature and the works of the prominent poets are studied. Then, the Romantic movement which emerged as a response to the Neoclassical period and its sensual philosophy is analysed.
