“I’m excited about the opportunity here at the
Sage YMCA. There are so many ways that we can use
our platform to help kids learn and grow, “ quipped the
Coach.
Please feel free to contact the coach with
questions, thoughts or comments in person or by email

Michael Phelps Trivia
Swimmers were posed this question in practice: “If Michael Phelps eats 10,000 calories
per day, how is it that his body fat is so low?”
A number of Piranhas stepped up and turned in responses. Many were very good,
educated guesses, however, no one got the answer completely correct. Most guesses were a
variation on the idea that Phelps swims so much that he uses all those calories as fuel. The
complete answer is that his body uses those calories for thermoregulation. As swimmers, the
overwhelming majority of our energy actually goes towards maintaining our body
temperature. Water transfers heat 25 times faster than air does. Or looked at inside out, a one
degree temperature change in the water is like a four degree change of temperature outside
of the pool. This explains why a three degree drop in water temperature makes the pool feel frigid; it’s like
playing basketball in a gym that is 12 degrees cooler than normal.
The Math
A calorie, at its basic definition is a measure of thermal or heat energy. If Phelps’ fine-tuned machine-like
body burns an average of 600 calories per hour in the water and he swims for six hours per day, he is using
3,600 calories specifically for his swimming. His body uses roughly another 2,200 calories per day for
maintenance and simple things like breathing, talking and walking. So he probably needs less than 6,000
calories per day. If he does dryland, it might be in the 7,000 range. So where does the roughly 3,500 calories
extra per day go? His body uses it to maintain proper temperature when in the water for all those hours.
Interestingly, 3,500 calories is about equivalent to 1 pound in body weight. If the special properties of heat
transfer in water weren’t so, he would gain 1 pound per day; 30 pounds per month!
Kudos to: Meghan Fenske, Nicholas Fenske , Taylor Fisher, Makenna Wozny, Rhiannon Wozny, Taylor
Langland, and Samanatha Anthony for submitting answers that were on the right track. Prizes for participating
will be available at practice. Other swimmers submitted answers but forgot to include their names.
