Ph. 08 89761391 Fax 08 89761212 February 2017 Brian Skinner Originally from Melbourne, Brian Skinner (Skins) came to the Territory from Melbourne. His trade as a plumber bought him to Pine Creek in 1985 with the contractors building the Goldfields camp. Like so many people who come to Pine Creek initially for work, Brian embraced Pine Creek and made it his home. Pine Creek not only gained a skilled plumber, we had our own look-a-like Paul Hogan! Brian has served the town as the sole proprietor of Pine Creek Plumbing. As a community, we have benefited greatly by having our own resident plumber. If you can imagine for a moment having a major plumbing crisis, and having to wait for someone to mobilise from Katherine, not to mention klm charge each way, and 2 hours traveling time at tradesman rates BEFORE commencement of the job, then you can really appreciate that for over the past 30 years Brian has serviced our community. In addition to Brian's contribution to the development and maintenance of infrastructure in the town, Brian has given his time and machinery to digging the graves for our dearly departed at absolutely no charge; a generous donation at a time when families can be overwhelmed and grief stricken. Your nomination today Brian Skinner, as Pine Creek's Citizen of the Year, is recognition for your contribution and confidence in our community. You continue to service our residents and business with your trade skills and for this we thank you. AUSTRALIA DAY Neve Rankine-Johnson Neve has always been an impressive young lady whose maturity has belied her tender age. Neve has never been a quitter and even though she struggled with her early attempts at athletics’ she never gave up. In 2016, Neve was selected to represent the NT in Athletics, when she revealed an amazing talent in running and was rewarded at the NT championships by winning her age group thus ensuring her selection in the NT squad. For Neve to travel and participate in the National Championships she had to commence fundraising. With the help of family and friends Neve was able to raise the funds in a very short space of time, a remarkable effort given the small population in Pine Creek. Neve ran hard and acquitted herself very well against the finest junior athletes in Australia and despite suffering a serious injury she came home having beaten all her personal bests. Neve is looking to the future and continuing her career in Athletics’. Her humility and strength of character stands her head and shoulders above her peers, she is an excellent role model in our community and thoroughly deserves this award! Sgt Shane Zuber Raising of the flag Australia Day - Pine Creek Neve with her very proud parents CJ & Loll and siblings Jada & Jack. AUSTRALIA DAY Pat Stone Pat Stone is a Volunteer whose actions within our community usually go unnoticed. Pat has been a member of Pine Creek FERG’s since 2001 when it was originally part of NTES (Northern Territory Emergency Service). Pat goes about his job without too much fuss or bother and is always keen to help the brigade’s new members with his wealth of knowledge. Pat is a very capable and willing Fireman, who calls a spade a spade. Many a wayward Firefighter has felt the lash of his tongue as he oversees there safety on the fire ground. He never complains when asked to turn out at all hours or when given any task at any incident. Whether it is being involved in a motor vehicle rescue, sweeping the road, to directing traffic, Pat executes his duties willingly and without any fuss. Pat can be relied upon to continue serving Pine Creek for many years to come and therefore he is a very deserving recipient of this award. John Lee John Lee went to Pine Creek Primary School. His Mother Hilda Lee made sure her children attended school everyday. John did well after graduating from Grade 7. He attended High School in Darwin at Kormilda College. He was chosen as a fast bowler and was included in the under 18 team to represent the NT side at an interstate carnival. After Kormilda College John returned to Pine Creek to work at Kybrook Farm. He became a good and reliable plant operator on the loader, backhoe, post digger and tractor slasher. John, with his guitar and singing choir, conducted Church Services each Sunday for the Kybrook Community. When Frances Creek Iron Ore mine began operation John was employed as a plant Operator. He set an example to his fellow workmates at Kybrook as a reliable dependent employee of the overall Francis Creek workforce. Unfortunately the mine closed but John has continued to be an active member in the Pine Creek Community. He is known for putting his hand up on many occasions, in the past and present years, as a volunteer at many community events, helping to transport adults and children from Kybrook and Town Camp and always happy to cook a BBQ. John is always available to help out at school events and on numerous occasions is willing to drop everything to get into school to collect children that need to be picked up for a variety of reasons. Congratulations! AUSTRALIA DAY Pine Creek celebrated Australia Day in true Aussie style! Many thanks to John Lee for his welcome to country, Cr Lawrence for presenting awards, Bevan and Grace for cooking the delicious bbq of lamb chops and snags, Bunny for his emceeing and great music and to all those that attended and made this day truly Special! While some people racked there brains over the Australia Day quiz others participated in the boot throw, egg toss, egg and spoon races, and the ongoing game of cricket! Also thanks to the terrific VDRC staff, for there time in coordinating this event, running activities and cleaning up afterwards, (on a public holiday). Without the efforts of this small crew these events would not happen. Well Done team! Now is the time to remind your family, friends and former work colleagues, of the dates and encourage them to make their transport and accommodation plans. If you have any photos you would like to share, they can be posted on the reunion facebook page. https:// www.facebook.com/events/657771114361036/ We are seeking some input into a program for the weekend activities. If you are interested in sharing some ideas, please contact Gaye Lawrence 0427724849. COMMUNITY NEWS Fergs News Another quiet month for our brigade with only 1 minor traffic accident to attend. Unfortunately the accident was preventable and had the vehicle owners maintained their car a little better it would still be drivable. Two new tyres would have prevented the car sliding off the road due to the wet conditions. With the new year well upon us I have commenced surveying our community with a view to planning our Strategic Burns for the year. Where possible, residents and property owners should now be taking steps to ensure their properties and homes are prepared for the Fire season. I know we might think the Wet is in full swing however Burning off has commenced in the Katherine region despite the huge amount of rain in the area. 2017 has the potential to be a very dangerous fire season due the huge wet resulting in the increase of fuel in and around Pine Creek, therefore residents should be planning now. I recently completed my training as a Volunteer Brigade Training Officer. This new role which has taken me 18 months to complete and allows me to be fully responsible for our units training, thus easing the huge workload upon the Katherine Station staff who would be required to oversee our members training. As a VBTO I can also visit other stations and train their members. We hope to have more VBTO’s in the region in the coming months. As always our brigade needs new members, so if you are 18yrs and older, maintain a reasonable level of fitness and are willing to undergo a Criminal history check, then give me a call, we train most Thursdays from 5pm and uniforms and training are supplied. Most of our new training course are accredited and nationally recognised. Gaye Lawrence Councillor Pine Creek Ward INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY VDRC will be hosting two community events for International Womens Day. A morning tea @ Kybrook on March 7th and a dinner @ Pine Creek Hotel March 15th. Theme for the day: Strong Indigenous Ladies in the Workforce Morning Tea provided @ Kybrook Farm Tuesday 7th March, 10.30am Guest Speakers - Veronica Birrell - TBA If you require transport to and from this event, please contact the Council 89761391. All ladies of all ages are very welcome! Every person - women, men and non-binary people - can play a part in helping drive better outcomes for women. Through meaningful celebration and targeted bold action, we can all be responsive and responsible leaders in creating a more gender inclusive world. The World Economic Forum predicts the gender gap won't close entirely until 2186. This is too long to wait. So around the world, IWD provides an important opportunity for ground breaking action that will truly drive greater change for women. Use International Women's Day (IWD) in March as an important opportunity to: - celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women because visibility and awareness help drive positive change for women, - declare bold actions you'll take as an individual or organization to help progress the gender agenda because purposeful action can accelerate gender parity across the world.
