Fleurieu Jerseys Milk 110 cows off 98 hectares in a 850mm rainfall area. We have been using US genetics for almost 20 years. The farm is located Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia. Why do we milk Jerseys? The Fleurieu herd has been operating for 63 years and we have averaged close to 50 cents/litre for our milk because of higher milk solids and the quality. The herd average has been over 7000litres/cow for the last ten years. Our calf and heifer rearing is very important to our future with losses to disease at about 0.2%. This resulted in 21 2year old heifers averaging 6799 litres of milk and 569 Kg of milk solids last year. There is no doubt that Jerseys are much easier to handle and are quieter than large breeds- Just ask our farm practical vet students. Jerseys Supreme on the Bottom line FACT: Jerseys eat 80% of intake of Holsteins BUT have 75% of the bodyweight.** FACT: Jerseys have a dry matter intake 18% greater than Holsteins HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE? FACT: Jerseys have a 39% greater rumen volume than Holsteins FACT: Jerseys have a greater dry matter % per hour of passage through the Rumen i.e 7.1 kg/DM v.s 5.9 Kg/DM WHAT IMPACT DOES THIS HAVE ON MY BOTTOM LINE ? More DOLLARS in the bank per Kg of Dry Matter fed to a JERSEY cow compared to a HOLSTEIN! Litres Holsteins 7056 Holstein @ 80% DM Intake 5645 Jersey 5244 Kg Fat Kg Prot. Income/Cow 272 218 259 227 181 196 $2441 $2773 This gives the JERSEY a clear advantage of $332/cow over the Holstein with the same feed intake on a dry matter basis. **Source of information for “Jerseys eat 80% of the intake etc” is James Tully Ph.DPAS of Pine Creek Nutrition Service, Inc Denair,California, USA. Source for figures in table are the national averages 2008/09 of ADHIS Pty Ltd. To get income/cow the values of $9/kg protein & $4.50 kg fat less 3cents/litre for cartage was used. JERSEYS FOR SUPERIOR EFFICIENCY, FERTILITY and CALVING EASE. Jersey cows, exemplify the word efficiency. Their milk is a (naturally) concentrated product that uniquely meets today’s demands for quality, economy and environmental sustainability. Jersey heifers reach sexual maturity earlier. They can be in the milking herd earning dollars younger than any larger breed and still outlast them in the longevity stakes. After calving the Jersey cow will return to oestrus earlier, helping farmers to attain that elusive goal of one calf per cow per year. The average Jersey will also exhibit signs of oestrus for a longer period and display more obvious signs, improving the likelihood of detecting the cow on heat. More importantly the longer a cow is on heat, the greater the chance of inseminating her at the optimum phase of her cycle for conception. Jerseys are renowned for their ease of calving. This means less late night supervision, lower vet bills, minimal stress on both farmer and cow. Jerseys have fewer stillbirths, less dystieia and less metritis than other breeds. More than any other breed, Jerseys are ideally suited to today’s dairy industry. ROD VERRALL CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR SCHOOL OF VETERINARY SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND Alexandrina Cheese Company Dan & Krystyna McCaul on the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia, operates the Alexandrina cheese company. The Jersey herd was founded in 1973 and the fourth generation are involved in the family business. We have successfully branded our cheese business and products using Jersey milk from our Jersey cows. We have won World cheese awards for our cheese as the Jersey milk has unsurpassed flavour and taste with a consistent rich golden colour. The all Jersey herd gives us a point of difference in marketing our dairy products over the traditional supermarket cheese and dairy products. The Jersey cow has enabled us to provide income for three generations of the family. Other benefits of the Jersey cow are the calving ease; graze well on temperate pastures, environmentally friendly leading to a sustainable efficient dairy cow. Jerseys Lead the way to Profit! WJCB* Efficiency = Profit * - World Jersey Cattle Bureau Jugiong Jerseys One of Australia’s largest registered Jersey herds milking up to 550 cows in recent years. Jugiong Jerseys began in 1932 and currently reside in Northern Victoria. The farm consists of 300 acres and is fully irrigated when water allocations allow. We choose to milk Jerseys as we find them to be the most economical converters of feed to milk, resulting in more profit. The Jersey cow is very versatile with the our herd averaging over 6000 litres/cow weather being fully fed on pasture or fed on bought fodder as has been the case in the last few years with insufficient water to irrigate with. We run a very high stocking management system (4.5 cows/ha) to get a higher return on assets. The breeds calving ease is essential due to the high number of cows to labour unit ratio that we have. The Jerseys ease of management traits makes working with a large herd so much easier.
