Intro…
You will create an abstract tempera painting inspired by the work of Georgia O’Keeffe.
What is essential?
 Understanding how to create a dynamic composition
 Understanding balance, unity and rhythm in a work of art
 Understanding the color wheel and color relationships
 Understanding how light and shadow create a sense of depth
You will know…
 How to crop an image to create an abstract composition
 The color wheel and color relationships (complementary, analogous, triadic, warm and cool color
schemes)
 Mixing colors and painting techniques with tempera paint
 The artwork Georgia O’Keeffe
Process:
 Introduction to Georgia O’Keeffe and her work through PowerPoint
 Designing an abstract composition using a photograph and a viewfinder
 Drawing the abstract image onto white 18X24” paper
 Review of color theory
 Color studies with tempera paint
 Paint the final composition with a specific color scheme. Use color and values of color to create
balance, unity and rhythm in your composition.
Balance - is a feeling of visual equality in shape, form,
value, color, etc. Balance can be symmetrical or evenly
balanced or asymmetrical and un-evenly balanced. Objects,
values, colors, textures, shapes, forms, etc., can be used in
creating a balance in a composition.
Harmony (aka Unity)- brings together a composition with
similar units. If your composition was using wavy lines and
organic shapes you would stay with those types of lines
and not put in just one geometric shape.
Rhythm - is a movement in which some elements recurs
regularly. Like a dance it will have a flow of objects that will
seem to be like the beat of music.
