Small pox was a terrible disease that killed many people in the 18th
century. The people who had the disease but did not die were left
scarred and disfigured for life. Edward Jenner, a country doctor,
discovered that people who were vaccinated with cowpox did not get
smallpox. However, there were people at the time who were against
vaccination. Many ordinary people were worried about giving
themselves a disease that came from cows.
