Small pox was a terrible disease that killed many people in the 18th century. The people who had the disease but did not die were left scarred and disfigured for life. Edward Jenner, a country doctor, discovered that people who were vaccinated with cowpox did not get smallpox. However, there were people at the time who were against vaccination. Many ordinary people were worried about giving themselves a disease that came from cows. Award two marks for the correct answer. 6800 (iv) Look to reward two distinct points here. Award one mark for each point made. Dr Jenner is giving an injection to a small boy. The injection is cowpox. The injection is to stop him developing smallpox. If only one point is made, but an attempt to explain is seen, this can be awarded two marks also. 8 QUESTION 3 6 marks in total This involves candidates constructing a graph or chart. They can use either graph paper or ICT for this task. Candidates should look to include the following in their work. • • • • • A title Two labelled axes An appropriate scale or gradation Equally spaced bars Labelled bars When awarding marks, apply the following mark scheme: Level 1 (1 – 2 marks) Can construct a graph / chart with some of the above. Needed considerable assistance to complete task. Level 2 (3 – 5 marks) Can construct a graph / chart with most of the above. Needed minimal assistance with task. Level 3 (6 marks) Can construct a graph / chart with all of the above. Completed task independently. 9 QUESTION 4 4 marks in total Award up to two marks for each reason given. Give one mark for general or brief answers. Award the two marks if the candidates are trying to explain. They were frightened of the actual injection. They believed they could get a disease from cows. They did not believe the injection would work.
