RABBI'S MESSAGE
This morning’s Torah reading begins with the sentence:
“Behold, I place before you today a blessing and a
curse.”
There is a peculiarity to this verse that is noticeable only
in the Hebrew and it relates to the word “you.” In the
Hebrew verse, “before you” (Leefnay-chem) is in the
plural, but “behold [or see]” (Reah) is in the singular.
Why was it phrased that way? The famed Rebbe Mendel
of Kotzk explained: “It is one thing to give everyone an
equal amount, to show no favor to one over the other.
However, it is rare that while being even and fair with
all, that we still ‘behold’ or ‘see’ each person as an
individual… .” It’s true that in the passion for
communalism, we can often lose a sense of the gifts that
each individual can bring. Therefore, a commandment
to “see [or behold]” should always focus on the
individual.
