THE W.L. GILBERT TRUST
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
All Gilbert School graduating seniors and alumni are invited to apply for The W.L. Gilbert Trust
Scholarships. Many in place since the early 1900s, these scholarships are made possible by
the generosity of Gilbert alumni and friends in their thoughtful commitment to the continuing
education of our students.
Marion E. Allen Scholarship: given to worthy students; est. in 1997 by the bequest of Marion
Allen, Gilbert School librarian from 1926 to 1957
Ryan Bartholomew Memorial Scholarship: awarded to a graduating senior or graduate of The
Gilbert School who plans to attend (or is attending) the Porter and Chester Institute or a similar
technical school; est. in 2011 by his family in memory of Ryan Bartholomew, class of 1999,
who died tragically as a result of an auto accident in 2009
Dorothy L. Barton Scholarship: awarded to a student who demonstrates the ability to lead and
the desire to dedicate her or his life to motivating others to strive for excellence; est. in 2005
through a bequest by Dorothy L. Barton, an educator at TGS for 33 years who encouraged and
challenged her students to think independently, work hard, and become an accomplished,
contributing member of society
Bazzano-Perlotto Scholarship: awarded to a hard-working student who is in college (or to a
senior planning to enroll) with strong leadership qualities; est. in 2011 in memory of Carmen P.
Bazzano, class of 1933, and William "Doc" Perlotto
Blue and Gold Merit I Scholarship: This scholarship is a combination of the following—
• Anthony F. Serafini Memorial Scholarship: est. by family and friends of Anthony F. Serafini,
class of 1928
• Helen M. Sheldrick Scholarship: est. in 1998 by friends and relatives of Miss Sheldrick, an
English teacher at TGS for 41 years and advisor for The Gilbert School News
• Ralph V. Tiffany Scholarship: est. by the late Ralph V. Tiffany, trustee of The Gilbert
School for many years
Blue and Gold Merit II Scholarship: This scholarship is a combination of the following—
• Karen Mary Centrella Scholarship: est. in memory of Karen, class of 1968
• Vanda Kammermeyer Scholarship: est. by Vanda's family in her memory
• Marion Nero Scholarship: est. by Marion's children
• Donald M. Walker Scholarship: given in memory of Donald Walker, a member of The
Gilbert School math department for over 25 years; est. by his friends, relatives, and
colleagues
Marie A. Boulli Trust Scholarship: income from this fund is used for scholarship purposes for
the higher education of a deserving student
Evelyn A. Cady Scholarship: given to a worthy student who needs financial support and is
pursuing studies in the health care or health services field; est. in 1999 by a bequest from
Evelyn Cady, administrative assistant at The Winsted Memorial Hospital for 50 years
Timothy M. Casey Scholarship: provides financial assistance for a graduating senior, with
preference given to a basketball player who exemplifies good sportsmanship; est. in memory
of Tim Casey, a 1978 graduate
Chase Scholarship: est. by Luther L. Chase, a trustee of The Gilbert School for many years, in
memory of his wife, Clara
Luther Lovell Chase Scholarship: provides scholarships for deserving students toward their
educational expenses in any institution of higher learning; est. by George, Paul, and Robert
Chase in memory of their father
Class of 1921 Scholarship: given to a senior; originally created in 1966 and later given to a
1971 graduate as a way for the Class of 1921 to celebrate their 50th anniversary; further
contributions have made it possible to continue this award annually
Class of 1947 Scholarship: given to a deserving student; est. by the Class of '47 in recognition
of their 50th anniversary
Class of 1957 Vision 2002 Scholarship: given to a senior or alumnus who has proven
academic excellence and motivation to succeed and is pursuing higher education; est. by the
Class of '57 in honor of their 45th anniversary
Ean Clough Memorial Scholarship: awarded to a senior student-athlete planning to attend
college; est. in 2008 by the Class of 1984 to honor and remember their late classmate
Robert L. and Mary Ellen Cormier Scholarship: awarded to a graduating senior who plans to
attend a four-year college and who has demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and
integrity; est. by family, friends, and colleagues in memory of Robert and Mary Ellen Cormier,
both members of The Gilbert School faculty with Robert serving as chairman of the business
department
Dorothy Bancroft Cornell 1926 Scholarship: awarded to a senior who will attend Northwestern
Connecticut Community College; est. in 2002 through a bequest by Mrs. Cornell
Dr. Donald M. Daly/Mary B. Wheeler Scholarship: given to a worthy student and not limited to
college attendees
Daniels-Youmans Scholarship: presented to a senior football player in memory of coaches
Ronald Daniels and Charlie Youmans; awarded every other year
Frank H. DeMars Scholarship: awarded to a senior or alumnus in good academic standing
with noteworthy character who plans to attend (or is attending) an accredited institution of
higher learning; est. in 2006 by Martha DeMars Richards, class of 1932, in honor of her father
Gemma C. DiMauro Scholarship: benefits a student pursuing a two-year associate degree at
Northwestern Connecticut Community College; based on scholastic achievement and financial
need
Jonathan Fairbanks Ells Scholarship: first consideration will be given to a liberal arts/law
student; est. by family and friends in memory of Jonathan F. Ells, a dedicated trustee of The
Gilbert School for 25 years, including his role as President of the Board
Pamela Burke Ellsworth Memorial Scholarship: given to a student who wishes to pursue
liberal arts, with preference given to a student of foreign language
Harry M. Gale Scholarship: awarded to a student planning to pursue a four-year college
degree
Edward B. Gaylord Scholarship: est. in 1940 by a bequest of the late Edward B. Gaylord,
President of the Gilbert Trustees for many years; another bequest by the late Robert E.
Gaylord, also a former president of the Gilbert Trustees, increased the original funds
Gilbert Alumni Association Fund: provides a scholarship; est. in 1923
Gilbert Athletic Scholarship: given to a senior; based on athletic participation and desire to
pursue a postsecondary education. This scholarship is a combination of the following—
• Dudley L. Vaill 1982 Scholarship
• Brian F. Welcome Scholarship: est. by family and friends of Brian, class of 1978
Gilbert Character and Leadership Scholarships: recipients will demonstrate exemplary
qualities such as character, leadership, scholastic excellence, maturity, and integrity. Three
separate scholarships are available—
• Class of 1945 Scholarship: provides assistance for young men and women who
demonstrate the potential to bring honor to Gilbert and to the community as they continue
to develop, grow, and excel in all facets of society; est. in 1995 by the Class of '45
• William D. Flaherty Scholarship: awarded to a student who has demonstrated academic
promise and has also exhibited the maturity, responsibility, and integrity of a future leader;
est. in 1983 by family, colleagues, students, alumni, and friends, and dedicated to "Doc"—
chairman of the science department and senior class advisor at The Gilbert School for over
29 years
• Othneil G. Williams Scholarship: awarded to a member of the graduating class who has
made an outstanding contribution to TGS through character, leadership, and scholastic
excellence; est. in memory of Othneil Williams, class of 1917 and trustee of The Gilbert
School from 1936 to 1960
Gilbert Faculty Fund: est. in 1928 by the Gilbert faculty; combined efforts of faculty and
students have substantially increased this fund
William L. Gilbert Home Memorial Scholarship: preference is given to a descendant of a
resident of the Home; est. in 1989 by former residents
Goodnow Scholarship: est. by the late Lillie Goodnow of Winchester
Philip J. Greene Scholarship: awarded to two Gilbert School seniors who are pursuing the
study of environmental sciences, preferably forestry, or studies related to the field of athletics,
agriculture, or music; est. in 2000
John Adam Groth 2006 Memorial Scholarship: awarded to one graduating senior or alumnus
who plans to attend (or is attending) any branch of the University of Connecticut, excels at
athletics, and demonstrates leadership and integrity; est. in 2010 in John's memory by friends
and family
Walter D. Hood Memorial Scholarship: est. by faculty and alumni in honor of the late Principal
Hood with a later substantial gift from his daughter, Mrs. Herman, and his son, Malcolm Hood
Myah and Jaime Irick 1992 Endowed Scholarship: awarded to a graduating senior who
belongs to a historically underrepresented group at Gilbert, with preference given to a student
with financial need who has at least a cumulative 3.0 grade point average; est. in 2011 by
Myah Moore Irick and Jaime Irick
Jenkins Scholarship: est. to honor her parents (Cecil and Ellen Jenkins) by Miss Vidala
Jenkins, a member of the first graduating Class of 1896
Francis J. Kane Scholarship: preference given to an athlete pursuing an education in business
or accounting or a student planning a career in education; est. in 1989 with a bequest from
Francis Kane
Annie May Larkin Scholarship: given to students who show promise of intellectual ability and a
character of honor and integrity; est. by alumni and friends of Annie on the 65th anniversary of
The Gilbert School
Alphonse P. Lavernoich Scholarship: awarded to a student who has excelled in history or
social studies, with preference given to a student who intends to major in history or social
studies; est. in 1994 in memory of Alphonse by his family
Phyllis C. Locascio Scholarship: provides scholarships for students who plan to pursue
postsecondary education, with preference given to relatives of employees of the Winsted Post
Office; est. in 2009 by the late Phyllis Locascio in memory of her parents, Salvatore and Maria
Locascio
John E. and Rose Lynch Scholarships: est. through bequests given by John and Rose Lynch
MacKinnon Scholarship: first preference is given to a student entering agriculture or a related
field of study; est. with a bequest from Leroy Arthur MacKinnon in memory of his late wife,
Mattie H. Barber MacKinnon, and his late son, Leroy Norman MacKinnon, both graduates of
The Gilbert School
Charles and Martha Marshall Scholarship: given to a senior; est. in 2004 through the bequest
of Dorothy Marshall Mills, class of 1938, and named in memory of her parents
Marshall Family Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student who has chosen to enter the
teaching profession, with preference given to a graduating senior pursuing a career in teaching
children or adults with disabilities or a career in teaching music; est. in 1996 in memory of
Lloyd and Virginia Marshall, both Gilbert graduates
Joan E. McGowan Scholarship: est. by a bequest from Miss Joan E. McGowan, an alumna of
The Gilbert School and a Latin teacher at the school for 25 years; funds have substantially
increased thanks to contributions from the Latin Club, alumni, students, faculty, and friends
Irving S. Milano Scholarship: awarded to a Gilbert student, with preference given to a student
entering the field of law enforcement or pursuing the study of political science or a related
area; est. by family and friends of Winsted's former Police Chief Milano
Jody M. Mochak Memorial Scholarship: recognizes a senior or alumnus in good academic
standing with noteworthy character, achievement, and leadership qualities, with preference
given to a student pursuing forestry or law enforcement; est. in 2004 by Paul and Linda
Vaccari, family, and friends
Katharine Morehardt Scholarship: est. by alumni, students, faculty, and friends in memory of
Miss Morehardt, chairman of the English department for 25 years
Henry S. Moseley Scholarship: est. in 1974 by contributions of the family, friends, and former
colleagues of Mr. Moseley, principal of The Gilbert School from 1937 to 1960
Joseph A. Norton Scholarship: est. in 1951 by his wife Annie and their three daughters—
Frances Roth, Helen Schaefer, and Ruth Mathewson—as a memorial to Joseph Norton, a
trustee of the school from 1920 to 1949
Lyman R. Norton Scholarship: est. by Elizabeth R. and Ella L. Norton in memory of their
father, who served on the original board of trustees
Nursing Scholarship: presented to a graduating senior who intends to pursue a career in
nursing. This scholarship is a combination of the following—
• Marie DiCara Harper Scholarship: est. in 1986 in Marie's memory
• Litchfield County Hospital Alumni Nursing Scholarship
• Registered Nurses' Scholarship
Open Door Scholarship: est. with a bequest from Miss Florence M. Brownell, chairman of the
English department for many years
Andrew and Rose Pasquariello Scholarship: given in memory of the late Andrew and Rose
Pasquariello; est. by their children
Felicia M. Pasquariello Scholarship: est. in Felicia's memory and funded with contributions by
members of the family
Vincent Kerry Paxcia Scholarship: awarded to someone who wishes to pursue a study in
music; est. by Vincent's friends and relatives
Mark Portinari Scholarship: provides a grant to a Gilbert senior or graduate who intends to
further her or his education
Henry Gay Pratt Scholarship: awarded to a deserving student who intends to major in the
liberal arts at an accredited college; est. by the family of Henry G. Pratt, Class of 1909
Marguerite E. Reid Scholarship: preference given to a business student; est. with a bequest
from Marguerite Reid
Frederic P. Richards Scholarship: provides financial assistance for a worthy student, with
preference given to someone planning to enter the field of education; est. by the family of the
late Mr. Richards
Joseph Rivollier Scholarship: est. for Gilbert seniors pursuing a postsecondary education
Harvey Roberts Scholarship: est. by the late Emily Roberts in memory of her husband, Harvey
Roberts, a former trustee of the school
Lillian K. Roberts Scholarship: awarded to a promising, worthy student in need of financial
assistance; est. by Mrs. Lillian Roberts and later increased by a bequest from Emir, her
husband
Root Family Scholarship: awarded to a Gilbert senior or recent graduate, with preference
given to someone who excels at athletics (particularly basketball) and has played two seasons
of a varsity sport at Gilbert, with secondary preference given to a soccer player; est. in 2010
William Rosgen Scholarship: assists a Gilbert senior or alumnus in furthering her or his
education in a postsecondary institution; the recipient is a person who has performed well in
academics and has shown outstanding qualities of good citizenship throughout high school
Joseph W. Rumrill Scholarship: provides financial assistance for a deserving business
student; est. by Marion F. Rumrill's bequest in memory of her husband, chairman of the
business department for 33 years
Edwin M. Ryan Memorial Scholarship: provides assistance for a student continuing his or her
education; est. in 1988 in memory of Mr. Ryan, a guidance counselor at TGS for 14 years
Dr. and Mrs. Roy V. Sanderson Nursing Scholarship: presented to a student interested in the
nursing or medical profession as a career; est. by their friends and their daughters, Mrs.
Bernice Foulke and Mrs. Ruby Calkins
Lester W. Schaefer Scholarship: est. by the late Mrs. Lester W. Schaefer and her daughter,
Mrs. Anne S. Camp, in memory of their husband and father, a former trustee of the school
Alice V. Schroeder Memorial Scholarship: recognizes one outstanding senior or alumnus
pursuing higher education; est. in 2003 by family and friends in memory of Gilbert alumnus and
former faculty member Alice “Lisa” Vaccari Schroeder, class of 1968
Joseph Serafini Scholarship: awarded to a senior athlete, preferably one who played baseball
at Gilbert (reflecting Mr. Serafini’s avid interest in the sport); est. in the 1970s and transferred
to The W.L. Gilbert Trust in 2003
Don and Hazel Simons Scholarship: presented to a Gilbert School senior planning to pursue a
career as a medical doctor, registered nurse, or veterinarian; est. in 2000
J. Albert and Emma Smith Scholarship: given to a deserving senior or alumnus wishing to
continue their education, with a preference for those planning to study nursing or music; est. in
2009 by Ralph and Mildred Smith
Ralph M. and Mildred N. Smith Scholarship: given to a deserving senior or alumnus wishing to
continue their education, with a preference for those planning to study nursing or music; est. in
2009 by Ralph and Mildred Smith
Ralph M. Smith Scholarship: provided to assist a senior or alumnus who intends to pursue a
career in music or nursing (in the absence of such a person, the scholarship shall be awarded
to a deserving student pursuing another study)
Edna Lindsay Rabbitt Spiotta Scholarship: awarded to a student who has declared her or his
intention to pursue a teaching career; est. in 1999 through the bequest of Mrs. Spiotta (known
by former students as Mrs. Rabbitt), who was a teacher at the Pearson Middle School for
many years
George W. Swope Memorial Scholarship: given to a graduating senior who attended
Winchester Public Schools and plans to major in music, theater, or a related field
Technical Study Scholarship: awarded to a deserving senior planning to enroll in a technical
or vocational school. This scholarship is a combination of the following—
• Dominic A. and Evelyn M. Bruno Vocational Scholarship: est. in 1999 by their children in
honor of Dominic "Nonnie" Bruno, class of 1930
• Joel Haskins Memorial Scholarship: est. by the Class of 1990
• Roy J. Reutter Educational Scholarship: est. by the citizens of Winchester
Ginger Tollar Teddick Memorial Scholarship: presented to a student of high scholastic ability
who is entering the field of home economics or a related field of study
Terrence Hastings Tirrell 1973 Memorial Scholarship: recognizes a senior or alumnus
pursuing higher education, with preference given to a senior who has excelled in math; est. in
2003 by family and friends of Terrence Tirrell, Gilbert alumnus and longtime faculty member
Irving C. Valentine Scholarship: est. by the late Irving Valentine, former President of the Board
of Trustees of The Gilbert School
Vietnam Memorial Scholarship: benefits a relative of a Vietnam or Vietnam-era Veteran
residing in Winsted and attending an accredited college full-time
Robert Voight Scholarship: awarded in memory of Robert Voight, former principal of Pearson
School
J. Senior and Ruby M. Washington Scholarship: awarded to a Gilbert senior or alumnus
Edward P. Wilcox Scholarship: awarded to a graduating senior or alumnus intending to follow
a nursing career
John W. Winn 1939 Memorial Scholarship: awarded to someone of noteworthy character and
citizenship as stated by Adele Winn, a teacher in Norfolk, CT, for 37 years; est. in 2005
through a bequest by Adele to honor her husband John, class of 1939; The Gilbert School is
among three high schools to have received significant funds for an endowed scholarship to
benefit students studying education, veterinary medicine, or government
Winsted Midget Football Scholarship: awarded to a member of The Gilbert School football
team or cheerleading squad who resides in Winsted and plans to pursue athletics in college
Irving J. and Pauline N. Woodward Scholarship: given to a graduating senior who wants to
pursue a postsecondary education and demonstrates good character, sound scholarship,
motivation to succeed, and a willingness to help others; est. by the family of Irving J.
Woodward, Gilbert trustee from 1947 to 1968
Peter F. Zuchegna Scholarship: est. to benefit a graduating senior who intends to major in the
arts or sciences
The Trust reserves the right to withhold some scholarships
if no candidates meet the qualifications during a particular year.
In addition to The W.L. Gilbert Trust Scholarships,
other grants have been made possible through the generosity of outside groups.
The Gilbert School Scholarship Committee chooses the recipients, but the funds are
distributed directly by the following organizations/individuals.
Back in the Game Scholarship: offered to one male and one female athlete who have
returned to play after suffering an injury; est. and funded by Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in
2013
Italian American Women's Club: offered to a deserving student with preference given to a
senior intending to pursue higher education
Northwest Community Bank Scholarship: offered to a graduate of The Gilbert School who
intends to further his or her education in the field of management, finance, accounting, or a
related field
Pythian Scholarship: awarded to a senior planning to attend Northwestern Connecticut
Community College
