Welcome to the 10th Tilnar Art brochure, which
showcases our exciting new 2015 Collection and
is packed full of fantastic Fair Trade products with
over 250 new lines to celebrate Tilnar Art’s 10th
anniversary.
by hand using sustainable natural materials and
traditional skills. As you can see we continue to be
original and unique and we hope that if you are a
new customer reading this, you have or you will take
the opportunity, to order something a bit different
for your shop, which will help differentiate you from
the mass produced products that dominate the high
street and help you stand out from the crowd.
I want to take this opportunity to reflect on what
has been an exciting 10 years and to thank you,
our customers, for your continued support. When
I left my career as a solicitor with a London Law
Firm 11 years ago, all I knew was that I wanted to
run a business that had a positive impact and that
provided a better work life balance to be with
my family - hence Tilnar Art - This Is Life Not A
Rehearsal Always Remember This. I am pleased to
say that Tilnar Art has achieved this, with our Fair
Trade purchases helping to improve the lives and
support the families of many of our artisans. Tilnar
Art can only make a small positive difference on a
micro scale through our purchases, but our link up
with WWF does help to contribute towards making
a positive difference on a larger scale and I would
definitely recommend the popular WWF range if it
fits into your retail environment.
To celebrate our 10th anniversary we designed a
new logo that includes our new trademarked strap
line “I thought before I boughtTM”. I continue to think
about how our products are made and how it will fit
in the modern home when selecting a new product
and I hope you and your customers will order from
our 2015 collection and be able to say “I thought
before I boughtTM” as well.
As always the team and I will continue to strive to
give you an excellent service and an expanding
unique and vibrant Fair Trade range in the years
ahead.

which, as always, is either from or inspired by Africa.
From Tilnar Art’s humble beginning (our initial
order was just 4 pallets) we now import more than
12 containers a year from 5 different countries,
have nearly 1000 lines and help support 100s of
artists across the developing world. Each product
is unusual, has a story and is sourced directly and
fairly from the artisans or producers who make
them. Above all, everything is made

These Fair Trade Animals are handmade by skilled
craftsmen in India. The animals are crafted over a wire
frame that is covered in rice grass and papier mache to
provide the body contours of the animals. It is then sundried before sheep and goats leather, a by-product of the
food industry, is then stretched over
the base. The animals are then hand
painted and polished to form these
stunning and durable life-like animals.

Animals are handmade in Zimbabwe

They collect seedpods which have
fallen from Ulumbu trees (Sterculia
rogersii). The seed pods, standing on

The ancient Japanese method of Raku firing leads
itself to creating unique African inspired pottery.
Each piece is removed from the gas Kiln at 950°C
and placed in sawdust.
The glaze cracks are
blackened by the smouldering sawdust. This process
is largely uncontrolled and the slight imperfections
that appear in the glaze are all part of the attraction
and excitement of raku firing.
Each piece of Raku pottery passes through the
hands of at least eight different skilled crafters, many
of whom etch or paint their initials on the bottom of
each item – making it a truly unique ‘one of a kind’
