Bienvenue au français! Welcome to French! My name is Lela

September 2016
Dear Parents,
Bienvenue au français! Welcome to French!
My name is Lela Dunbar, and I will
be your child’s French teacher this year. I will work very hard to offer your child the best
opportunities for learning and growth. I hope that you can help me educate your child by
helping him or her at home.
I encourage you to check your child’s planner nightly. Make sure that each subject box
is filled out with the homework assignment or the word “NONE.” Then check to make sure that
the assignments listed are completed correctly. If they are not complete, perhaps your child
needs a comfortable space to complete them, or perhaps he or she needs your help.
I also implore you to help your child pack his or her backpack with all of his or her
materials and assignments the night before school. Once your child develops a routine for
completing and packing homework, he or she will be able to complete these steps with less
help from you.
I assign homework and expect students to study new vocabulary daily. If your student
needs help studying there are many ways that you can help, even if you don’t know French.
You can help your student create flashcards of new vocabulary and then study these
flashcards, 3 at a time. He or she will be able to instruct you on how to help. Additionally, your
child will benefit from teaching someone else such as you, a sibling, another relative or friend.
I will contact you in order to inform you of any behavioral problems.
Please contact me if you have any questions. I look forward to a great year with your
child.
Sincerely,
Mademoiselle Dunbar

Grading: I use the following assessments to determine the class average:
Class work/Class Participation… In-class activities
Quizzes… Vocabulary/Verbs
Projects… Chapters/Topics
Homework… Independent Assignments
Students will take a final exam in French in June. This prepares students for the
experience of taking a final exam. Students can earn a high school credit in
French in 8th grade if they pass the final exam and the class, French I.
 Students should be prepared to take a quiz every Friday, but be prepared for
pop quizzes. Students may retake quizzes if they make an appointment to do
so, within reason.
Students should complete homework every night and bring it to class the day
it is due to receive credit.
Students will be expected to complete individual and group projects.
You may try to reach me at 497-4000. If I am unavailable, please leave a

Study suggestions:
Every person learns differently!
Here are some study techniques to try:
1 write vocabulary three to five times each,
2 stack vocabulary words (this technique really helps with spelling)
3 draw pictures of the vocabulary and label them,
4 create flash cards and use them to study,
5 ask someone to quiz you,
6 use new vocabulary words in sentences, aloud or in writing.
7 Create a study guide. Fold a piece of lined paper in half. Write items to study on the left and their
definitions on the right. Fold the study guide in half and quiz yourself.
8 You can quiz yourself out loud or lay the study guide on a blank sheet of
paper and try to write the information that you are trying to learn.
9 Create a song with the information you are trying to learn.
10 Find a video of the information you are trying to learn.
