PHS CLASSROOM GARDEN
By: Harrison Garrett, Evan Fiore, and Kelly McSherry
Are you excited for a classroom garden? We know we are! Mrs. Tucker, the
life skills teacher at Perry Hill, wanted to start a project to get the students of PHS
outside and active. She began by putting in raised beds to plant vegetables to be
harvested and used in her class and cooking club. Her passion for gardening got
other teachers at PHS involved and soon the Garden Committee was created. This
led to the Pretty up Perry Hill event that was held on October 22nd. Target
employees, members of the Perry Hill PTO, Mutual Security Credit Union
employees, and PHS staff came out to help the Garden Committee pretty up
Perry Hill. Mr. Calvin, one of the custodians here at Perry Hill decided to help us out
with the garden as well. We asked him why he wanted to participate in this
project. He told us, “I wanted to help because it was the right thing to do.” Mr.
Calvin believes that this project is a good idea and that it could be used for all
different reasons. Mrs. Fenstermaker, a member of the Garden Committee was the
one to contact Target and get them involved. Target wanted to help us start the
classroom garden because the volunteers said, “We are very proud of the town
that we live in and wanted to help students learn, “GROW”, and succeed.” They
believe that kids like us should learn how to grow food and take care of plants.
When we asked Jessica Avery, the lead member of Target what she thinks about
our project she told us, “I think it's an amazing idea and I think it’s so important that
children can learn the value in growing their own food, the growth cycle of plants,
and I think it’s super important to their education.” We are so thankful for the
people that volunteered. We know that there is still more work to be done and we
are up for the challenge!
PHS GOES PINK
By: Jack Sabo, Roy Lenhard,
and Ben Sheldon
Do you remember when Perry Hill went pink? This big event took place
on Friday, October 16th, 2015. Throughout the week, pink bracelets and rings
were sold for $1 donations and mini pink footballs were sold for $3 donations all in support of breast cancer awareness.
So many students at Perry Hill donated money even when they heard
that we were sold out of bracelets and footballs! Teachers also donated
money by having an extra dress-down day.
If you don’t know what The Valley Goes Pink is, it’s a fundraiser to
create awareness for detecting early breast cancer. When we donate, we
are supporting the Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital. This is
such a big organization that they partner with other companies as well.
In total, including student and staff donations our school raised an
astounding $1,900 for The Valley Goes Pink! Everyone at Perry Hill was proud
to help with this worthy cause donating and wearing pink to show their
support. If you want to see all of the student and staff pictures, please visit our
website www.perryhillpantherpride.weebly.com.

Halloween Safety
By: Amanda Madera and Jessica Ziegler
Being safe on Halloween is a big deal! We have some tips
that you might want to hear. When you’re crossing the street, make
sure to bring a flashlight so cars can see you crossing. Also, don’t go
to houses that have their lights off because there is a big chance no
one will be home. If someone invites you in a house, you should not
go in unless you know the person and it’s always a good idea to
trick-or-treat with an adult or with a group. Finally, after you go
trick-or-treating, gather up all your candy and check it. Don’t eat
any of the unwrapped candy or items that are homemade, unless
you know the person who made it. To wrap it all up, make sure to
be safe on Halloween, but most importantly, HAVE FUN! Oh! Don’t
forget your teachers like candy too! Find out their favorite treat and
bring in some on Monday!
Meet the New specials teachers
By: Anna Leone, Summer Spinelli, and Andreia Jorge
Ms. Fernandes. “Who is that?” “We know!”
It’s our new gym teacher at Perry Hill School!
When we asked Ms. Fernandes why she became
a teacher, she told us, “Gym was my favorite
subject, I love sports and working with kids.” We
asked her why she wanted to work at Perry Hill
School and she told us, “I grew up in Shelton, I
went to Shelton schools and I thought that Perry
Hill was a really nice school.” We also asked her
what she enjoys most about being a gym
teacher. She replied “Being able to play with
students every day.”
We also have another new specials
teacher at Perry Hill School! His name is MR.
COOPER! What does he do...ART!!! Mr. Cooper
previously worked at Sunnyside School and
Booth Hill School. We then asked him when it
was he decided to be an art teacher. He
answered, “When I was around twenty-two
years old, but I have always been an artist.”
We also asked him what he loves most about
his job and he told us, “Sharing all the things I
have in my brain with everyone else.” We
asked him one last question. It was what kind
of art do you like to draw the most? He
responded, “CARTOONS!” Mr. Cooper and Ms.
Fernandes are our new specials teachers!
Make sure you welcome them when you see
them around.

home because he couldn’t find me.
The more he looked for me; the
more he felt my presence. When he
finally found me; he threw me away.
