In this Issue,
Permethrin is a common ingredient in among flea and tick
control products as well as insect repellants. While
permethrin is safe on dogs, even small amounts of the
ingredient on the skin of cats can cause deadly problems.
Please contact the hospital to find out which of the flea and
tick treatments contain permethin.

Signs of permethrin toxicity in cats include tremors, muscle
twitches and seizures. Symptoms can develop within 2hrs
or up to 48 hours later. If your cat is exposed to permethrin it is an emergency situation.
Immediately wash your cat and contact a vet. After regular business hours, you can call 0411 119
412 and speak with the veterinarian on-call. Left uncontrolled, the symptoms of permethrin
toxicity can prove fatal to cats. Most cases if treated early have a high level of success. Treating
this problem with medication, IV fluids, bathing, and other
supportive care.
The best way to protect your cat from permethrin poisoning is to
always read the label before applying a flea treatment. Always
remember that cats are NOT small dogs,
so purchase a flea control that is
specifically for cats and always follow
instructions to dose the cat correctly.
Flea product doses should NEVER be
split up between animals, they come in
single does that are calculated by the
pets weight.
If you have any questions or concerns
please contact the Hospital.
Mount Hutton Pet Hospital Now
Offers In House Pathology.
We have recently added an in house pathology unit to our A
class hospital. Previously we sent all blood tests
away to a local laboratory, and usually would
wait up to 24hrs for results. Now we can do
pathology on the spot with reliable and accurate
results available in a much shorter time frame.
Some specific tests are still required to be sent to
a local laboratory, such as hormone level testing.
All the Veterinarians and Veterinary Nursing
staff have been trained to use the specialised equipment.
Having an in house pathology unit means you as a pet owner
can have more peace of mind knowing that results can be
obtained faster and pets can receive the correct treatment sooner.
Pre-anaesthetic screening can be done the same day as a surgical procedure. A pre-anaesthetic
blood screen can test for:
 Kidney and liver function, as the are responsible for
metabolizing the anaesthetic after the procedure.
 To ensure blood clots efficiently.
 To make certain blood carries oxygen properly.
 Make sure the pet is able to fight infections, and
 Identify early signs of major blood and organ
problems.
If you have any questions please contact the hospital.

Breed Bio – German Shorthaired Pointer
The German shorthaired pointer is descended from the
old Spanish Pointer, which was taken to Germany in
the 1600s. This is one of the few hunting breeds that
can perform virtually all gundog roles to track, point
and retrieve.
Their colour can be liver, black, commonly the head is
a solid colour and the body is white, speckled with
liver or black, with large patches of solid color. Their
coat is short, flat, thick and hard to the touch and is
water-resistant. Adult German shorthaired pointers
typically weigh from 25-32 kg, with the female usually
slightly shorter and lighter than the male.
They are very energetic and smart so they require a lot of training to keep them interested, this
breed can become destructive if they are bored. They are good family dogs and crave human
attention and interaction.
The Shorthaired Pointer is generally a healthy breed. Seizures have been a problem in some lines,
and a few individuals may suffer from hip dysplasia, genetic eye diseases, or skin cancer. Like all
dogs with flop ears, it can be prone to ear infections.
Since Microchiping was made compulsory, finding the owners of lost dogs has
been much quicker and easier. Unfortunately most people neglect to change
the pet into their name and we are often lead back to the breeder or pet shop
where the pet originally came from. It is very important that you register your
pet into your name and keep your details up to date so that you can be
reunited with your lost pet as fast as possible.
Meet the Staff- Kacey
Hi everyone, I’m Kacey!
I started working at Mt Hutton Pet Hospital in
December 2006. I’m loving meeting you all and your
beautiful pets.
I have 3 beautiful dogs of my own, a Rottweiler

and my new puppy ‘Ned’ a Jack Russell x Foxie. I
have a big kitty called ‘Brut’ (he has too much
personality!). I have horse named ‘Tilly’, with which
I complete in dressage and pony club events.
I also have a dirt bike (which I havn’t named)
which I like to ride in my spare time.
I have my Certificate 4 in Veterinary Nursing as well as my Equine First Aid Certificate.
For the past 5 years I worked at an Equestrian Centre training horses and teaching people to ride
along with caring for sick and injured horses.
For 2 years previous to this I worked in other veterinary clinics, including the RSPCA while
studying to be a Veterinary nurse.
So now you know a bit more about me, I look forward to seeing soon.
