Disability Is Not an Obstacle
Many days ago there were two house surgeons who approached me to learn
work. One of them was lame. The other always followed the disabled and helped
him. They were very good friends.
After some days, I made them sit with me for a few minutes and spoke with
them. I asked them whether it was possible for them to live together after
completion of their course or after their marriage. I told them not to depend on one
another and that nobody would come to their help later, when each had to live their
own life. Hence it was advisable for them to learn independently. I then narrated to
them the life story of Helen Keller, Beethoven and likes. (One of the boys is now
leading veneriologist and AIDS specialist)
Helen Adams Keller was an American author, political activist, and lecturer. She was the first
deafblind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree.

Once, a patient came to me with diabetes. His leg had to be amputated. He
was in deep depression. He was not recovering. I counseled him and told him the
story of „Sudha‟. Sudha Chandran is a great dancer. Hel leg was removed. She was
not depressed; she did not get scared of life. With the help of Jaipur foot, with all
pain, she practiced dance and became a great dancer.
Based upon her life, Sri Ramoji Rao of “Eenadu”, made the cinema
„Mayuri‟. It is advisable that all the orthopedic patients and doctors should see the
move.
Sudha Chandran is an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer, Indian film and television actress,
who turned to great dancer and actor following the loss of a leg in an accident in May 1981 near
Trichy, Tamil Nadu.

There is one MBBS friend of mine, whose legs were afflicted with polio.
With great deal of patience and gusto, she worked hard and now a leading
gynecologist. She settled in Ongole. Such people take life as a challenge to
overcome the difficulties and achieve their goals.
There are however people who are quite opposite to this. They are dispirited,
disappointed and are a nightmare to the attending doctors. There are even doctors
who rush to the doctors with fear of heart attack or some imaginary problem. A
few doctor friends of mine have suffered from cancer. Still with great courage and
determination they faced the troubles, overcame the difficulties and continued their
profession while undergoing the treatment.
Think of the Nawad of Pataudi, a great cricketer of yesteryears. He lost one
of his eyes at the peak of his career. He faced many fast bowlers. He was the
youngest captain for the Indian cricket team (may be the younger generation
knows him better as the father of Saif Ali Khan). He used to do wonders in the
field with that single eye.

Similar is the case of Christopher Reev, the actor of Superman fame. This

These are some of the experiences I noted. We ourselves cannot experience
all the things. We build our won house basing on the experiences of others also. If
not, one‟s lifetime is not sufficient to learn with personal experience. We have to
learn from them, the mental toughness, the zest for life, and the will to contribute
to the community.
Hence we should read the autobiographies of great people and learn from
their lives.
