The simple subject tells who or what is doing something. It is just the subject noun or pronoun without any other words that tell more about it.
 She sleeps a lot.

The complete subject tells who or what is doing something. It can be one word or more than one word.
 She sleeps a lot.
 Her friend sleeps a lot.

The simple predicate tells what the subject is doing. It is just the verb without any other words that tell more about it.

The complete predicate tells what the subject is doing. It is the verb plus any other words that tell more about it. It can be one word or more than
one word.

An independent clause is a complete thought that can stand alone as a sentence.

The clause can stand alone. It is independent.
A dependent clause is not a complete thought and cannot stand alone as a sentence.

The clause cannot stand alone. It is dependent.

A simple sentence is made up of a single independent clause.
Ben and I spent all day relaxing by the pool.
Some simple sentences have introductory phrases, but the introductory phrase is part of the
predicate. You could move the introductory phrase to the end and it would still be simple.
In the winter, Ben usually wears his heavy coat.
Since 1923, the United States Flag Code has provided advisory rules for displaying and
handling the U.S. flag.

A compound sentence is made up of two independent clauses joined by a coordinating
conjunction
FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
We saw a flash of lightning, and seconds later we heard the rumble of thunder.
We saw a flash of lightning, but minutes later we heard the rumble of thunder.
We saw a flash of lightning, or a flicker of light from the lamp post.
We saw a flash of lightning, so we ran inside to stay safe.
The dog does not like lightning, nor does a dog like thunder.
A complex sentence is made up of an independent clause and a
dependent clause.
The dependent clause usually begins with a subordinating
conjunction such as after, although, as, because, before, if,
since, unless, until, when, or while.
Leonardo da Vinci, who was a renowned painter and sculptor, was also an inventor and
scientist.
If she ever gets the chance, Terri would love to visit the Egyptian pyramids.

A compound-complex sentence is made up of two or more independent clauses
and one or more dependent clauses.
After Samantha left work, she stopped at the bank, and then she went to the
gym.
The platypus has venom-producing glands, which are rare among mammals,
but its venom is not generally lethal to humans.

Denotation is the literal meaning of a word that can be found in a dictionary.
Connotation is the feeling or idea that goes along with a word.
Many words with similar denotations have different connotations.
For example, think about the words frugal and miserly.
Both denote tending to save money
Frugal has a more positive connotation
I really admire how frugal Marcus is when it comes to making new purchases.
Frugal suggests that a person is careful with money, so it helps express why Marcus is admired.
Miserly has a more negative connotation and suggests a person is cheap or stingy.

Miserly suggests that a person is cheap or stingy. It's a poor word choice to express admiration.
