Features: *Remember our text evidence sentence starters? The PARCC really emphasizes showing text evidence for answers. Do not base answers on memory. IT IS AN OPEN BOOK TEST! Always go back to find the answer. Click and Dragging to show sequence or summary. This test will give you the task of sequencing a story or compiling a summary by clicking and dragging the best answers in order. Usually you do not use all answer choices. When sequencing be sure to only include points that support the central idea, do not include unimportant details. Words: The sample tests I have seen have a fondness for these words: Fact: Truth known by actual experience or observation. Something known to be true. Judgement: an opinion or position reached after consideration of the facts. Speculation: a theory, hypothesis or belief about possibilities, not necessarily based on facts. Tone: the attitude of the author toward the subject matter or mood Central Idea: main idea, main point Analytical Essay: You will read multiple texts and maybe even watch a video. After reading/watching each one you will answer questions. Usually it is followed up by an analytical essay. What is an analytical essay? Basically analyze and compare the two(or three pieces) of writing. What do you do? Sentence one: Bring both stories together with an opening sentence reflecting the question. EX: In both Confetti Girl and Tortilla Sun, tension is created in the stories by characters having a point of view that differs from their parents. The best way to organize yourself after the opening is to describe each story one at a time. Complete a paragraph for the first story. ‘For example, in Confetti Girl, tension is created when………………………. Use transition words between sentences to make different points. ‘Furthermore……..In addition…. The best number for examples from the story is 3. (one example is too little, 4 too much..) After exploring the first story, explore the second in the same way. Conclude at the end with a statement that draws both stories together. Paraphrasing the opening statement or rewording the question as a statement usually works. Ex: It is obvious that tension was created in both stories by characters disagreeing with parents. Although each story illustrates this in different ways, the tension is effectively created for the reader. Suggested Format for your Analytical Essay: 1. Introduce, bringing both stories together. (Why are they being discussed together?) What question will be answered in your essay. (for example ‘tension’ in the example above) 2. Discuss the first story or video. Give 3 examples from text, use transition words. 3. Discuss the second story or video. Give 3 examples from text, use transition words. 4. Conclude with a rephrasing of the opening sentence or the question.
