Sing a Song of Subways
By Eve Merriam
Sing a song of subways,
Never see the sun;
Four-and-twenty people
In room for one.
When doors are openedEverybody run.
The Subway Train
By Leland B.Jacobs
The subway train, the
subway train,
If you’ll permit me to explain,
Is like a busy beetle black
That scoots along a silver track;
And, whether it be night or day,
The beetle has to light its way,
Because the only place it’s found
Is deep, deep, deep, deep, underground.
A Rumble
By Virginia Schonborg
They roar
Out of the river tunnels
Into the streaming streets,
As strong
As a pride of lions,
As long
As a gaggle of geese.
A rumble of trucks
Streak through the city.
I’d like to drive one
Towering over taxis,
Diesels smoking!
I’d like to drive one,
Cars pulling over,
Cops waving!
I’d like to streak
Through the city
Part of
A rumble of trucks.
Things To Do If You Are A Subway
By Bobbi Katz
Pretend you are a dragon.
Live in underground caves.
Roar about underneath the city.
Swallow piles of people.
Spit them out at the next station.
Zoom through the darkness.
Be an express.
Go fast.
Make as much noise as you please.

Underground
By Allan A. De Fina
silver subway star
streaking snakelike
sneaking, snarling
crackling in caverns
crouching, crooning,
cackling, coughing
people poised, pondering,
posing, primping,
preparing,
a new day outside
the dark tunnels.
Riding the Subway Train
By Allan A. De Fina
Hurrying, hustling, hurtling past,
the subway train
approaches at last!
Whooshing, whizzing, whistling air,
blows in faces
and messes up hair!
Rumble, rattle, screeching stop!
The train rolls in,
and on all hop.
Snap! Shut! Train doors close!
It jerks and lurches
as off it goes!
Whoosing, whizzing, whistling along!
The subway sings
It’s noisy song.
Riding on the Train
By Eloise Greenfield
I see
fences and fields
barns and bridges
stations and stores
trees
other trains
horses and hills
water tanks
towers
streams
old cars
old men
roofs
raindrops crawling backwards on the window
I hear
ruggety-ruggety
squeakety-squeakety
rumbled-rumbledy
woonh, WOONH!
Wil-ming-tonnnnn
I feel
my leg jiggling
my bottom bouncing
my shoulders shaking
my head rolling
I’m getting sleepy!
