In class we read a little bit about the country of Argentina. Then some of you viewed a DVD where we were lead on a tour of the countries’ highlights. Now we are going to take a look at a news article from a Scholastic publication. Iván Topor, a teenager from Buenos Aires, Argentina was interviewed for this article in ¿Qué Tal? Magazine. In his country a lot of people can trace their ancestors back to Italy or Spain. Because of this a lot of people say they feel like they are in Europe when they are in Buenos Aires. In this capitol city a lot of people from different religious backgrounds live together, just like where we live. Below he shares what Easter means to him. ¿Y ustedes? ¿Qué hacen durante la semana de Pascua? There are several COGNATES in the above article; words that look like and sound like words in English and do mean the same thing. On the lines below write down at least four cognates that you can find and define them in English: There are also some words in the above article that are NOT cognates, but we learned what they meant sometime during Spanish class. Now find at least four words in Spanish that you understand and write them down below with an English definition. Did you understand some of what was said? Can you put into your own words what you thought Iván might be sharing with you? Now go ahead and read the translation of this article in English: Easter in Argentina In Argentina Easter is an important holiday. In the provinces throughout Argentina, Holy Week is a religious time when there are processions and masses. Even if you are not Catholic or religious it’s a good time to get to know these traditions in my country. I really like this holiday because I love chocolate! During this holiday we eat a lot of chocolate: cakes, candy, Easter bread, chocolate eggs, chocolate hens, etc. Every year we stay home from school during the week before Easter and spend time celebrating with our families. I, for my part, see my friends and we go to the movie theatre or play soccer together. What about you? What do you do the week before Easter?
