R
BEING A MEANS OF CELEBRATING THE ACHIEVEMENTS
Charles Darwin realised that his vague ideas about inheritance were a
potential flaw in his explanation of evolution. Without doubt, he would have
been delighted and intrigued to learn how modern genetics supports and
confirms many of his ideas, providing evidence not only for the
evolutionary relationships between all life on Earth, but also showing
precisely how living things evolve at the molecular level.
The DNA to Darwin project encourages 16–19 year-old biology students to
explore the molecular evidence for evolution by using computer software
to analyse DNA and protein sequence data. Each of the activities centres
around an engaging story from recent research in molecular genetics from
microbiology, plant and animal biology or human evolution.
All of the resources are available free-of-charge
from the DNA to Darwin web site:

DNA sequence data presents compelling ‘forensic’ evidence for evolution,
yet until now this has not featured in school biology courses.
