Self-Watering Drought

Self-Watering Drought-Proof Planter
The Drought-Proof Planter holds 50 quarts of Self-Watering Container Mix.
Water wicks up from the 8-gallon reservoir through the wicking cords to keep
the soil moist and decrease your watering worries.
Assembly
Important: The side of the Planter has two holes covered with plugs. Remove
the upper plug when the Planter is used in outdoor locations to allow excess
rain or water to overflow. You may remove the upper plug during indoor use
to monitor the water level and ensure that the soil does not become saturated.
Remove the lower plug to drain the Planter completely prior to moving, storage
or freezing weather.
Step 1. Prepare 50 quarts of Container Mix or other lightweight planting mix in a
separate container by moistening it and mixing in a granulated, slow-release
fertilizer. Place the Planter in position before adding mix.
Step 2. Locate the wicking cords in the Planter. Pull on them gently and hold
them up about 6" from the bottom. Add Container Mix to that depth to hold
the cords in place.
Step 3. Plant your plants and fill to the desired depth with Container Mix. After
planting, water the mix thoroughly.
Step 4. Water your plants from the top as usual for the first three months while
they establish new roots. You do not need to fill the reservoir during this
time, although it's okay to do so.
Step 5. After three months, plant roots should be well established throughout
the mix. Water well and fill the reservoir through the fill hole opening in the
rim to start the wicking action. Water from the reservoir will wick up to the
mix and keep it moist. Fill the reservoir as needed.
Winter Care
To avoid damage to the Planter, do not allow water to freeze in the reservoir.
Drain the reservoir by removing the plug near the base of the Planter and move
it indoors prior to freezing temperatures.
