Vertebrates and Invertebrates

Eglinton Country Park
Environmental Education Pack
Year Group : Second Level
Curriculum for Excellence : Science / Planet Earth / Biodiversity
Lesson Topic : Vertebrates & Invertebrates
Time : 1 hour
Experience and Outcomes:
• I can identify and classify examples of living things, past and present, to help me appreciate their
diversity. I can relate physical and behavioural characteristics to their survival or extinction. SCN
2-01a
• By investigating the lifecycles of plants and animals, I can recognise the different stages of their
development. SCN 2-14a
Lesson Overview:
A Ranger led walk will lead the learner through a
process of understanding and appreciation of the
difference between invertebrate and vertebrate
species, using observation and practical
investigation skills.
A physically active game will produce openness
to new thinking and ideas and help reinforce
recognition of invertebrate and vertebrate
species, whilst allowing self-expression and
opportunity for communication in team work.
The learner will develop skills that will allow them
to recognise common invertebrate and vertebrate
species through first hand investigation of both
terrestrial and aquatic environments.
Suggested Learning Activities:Ranger Led Walk:
A wildlife walk that explores the difference
between invertebrate and vertebrate, discussing
the variation within each group i.e. birds,
mammals, amphibians, and introducing
metamorphosis.
Identification Game:
An active game where learners have to decide
whether a creature is an invertebrate or
vertebrate.
Pond Dip:
Looking at aquatic invertebrate in the fresh water
environment.
Dragonfly Life-cycle:
A fun activity to reinforce the idea of
metamorphosis within the invertebrate group and
discover how a species can change from water
dweller to air-breather.
Minibeast Hunt:
Looking at terrestrial invertebrates in the
woodland environment.
