Predicting Products

1. identify the type of reaction.
2. determine the subtype  watch for metals or nonmetals; halides = halogens;
binary = 2 atoms; look for polyatomic ions (carbonates, hydroxides, etc.)
3. write the products based on the template given in the reference tables
MAKE SURE TO "CROSS CHARGES" TO GET THE CORRECT
CHEMICAL FORMULA!!!!!
don't forget the diatomic molecules (BrINClHOF)
use roman numerals for transition metals (assume the charges are the same in the
reactants and products)
4. balance the final equation

Write the formulas for the given reactants. Decide what type of synthesis
reaction it is, then write the products and balance the equation.
1. hydrogen and oxygen
2. aluminum and bromine
3. potassium and oxygen
4. magnesium and nitrogen

Now, decide what type of reaction occurs, then the subtype, determine the products
and balance.
1. barium nitrate and sulfuric acid
2. copper and sulfur
(assume copper will have a 1+ charge)
3. water
4. zinc and sulfuric acid
5. aluminum hydroxide and sulfuric acid
6. methane (CH4) burns in the presence of oxygen
7. lithium and oxygen
8. potassium hydrogen carbonate
