Desk of Mrs. Susan Soderlind Dear Parents & Guardians: This is a busy time of the year for students and teachers with registration and spring extracurricular activities, as well as the anticipation of graduation for the seniors. There are many important items for you to note during this time. Currently, the counselors are meeting with the underclassmen to go over course selection for next fall. Counselors will check GPA’s and requirements, and track the progress of each student as they meet with them. The first week of May we will send home with each student a copy of the courses they have been registered to take next year. Please check this list closely, and discuss with your child the selections they have made. Changes can be made through June 15. After that time, the schedules are generated and staffing is completed. No schedule changes can be made after that date. On February 28 we will begin the first round of FCAT testing with the writing test in grades nine and ten. FCAT retakes will be April 9. The survey was opened to all parents on September 6 and remained open until October 30. There were 5053 respondents in this administration of the parent survey. Message to parent and graduates of the Class of 2012 Clinic News Dr. Michael Roberts BTWHS has a new nurse, Rebecca Gauthier RN BSN, a former Indian who has crossed over to the wild side….The WILDCAT Side!! Mrs. Gauthier comes to us with 27 years of nursing experience and looks forward to meeting the clinical needs of our students and staff. The mission of the clinic is to protect and promote the health of all of our students, as well as the staff and visitors to our school. We encourage our students to maintain a healthy lifestyle, to make good choices, get immunized, eat healthy and exercise. Classes for smoking cessation and living a tobacco free life are in the planning stages and will be given to the students here at BTWHS soon. If there is anything that Mrs. Gauthier or Ms. Blalock can do to make your lives healthier, please feel free to stop by and say hello. In the mean time…Live Strong!! Graduation is right around the corner, yes June 5, 2012, at 1:00 PM. The 2012 commencement ceremony will take place at the Pensacola Civic Center located in beautiful downtown Pensacola. I would like to share a message with each of you. The graduation/ commencement ceremony is considered a rite of passage wherein a generation of young people is publicly certified to be eligible to move on to take their rightful place in society as adults. At Booker T. Washington High School, we take great pride in this certification ceremony. We are so serious about the graduation/commencement ceremony that our faculty and staff precede the graduates as they march into the arena. They then are seated alongside the senior class, giving visible endorsement to their certification. Certainly, graduation/commencement is an excitement-filled occasion for graduates and their families, and well, it should be. Graduation/ Commencement is the most important culminating event in the public school career of the student. It is a significant milestone that has been achieved by the student as each approaches the stage to receive his or her diploma. Graduation/commencement should be a stately, dignified, regal event that is steeped in splendor, pomp, and circumstance. It should be an occasion that has the air/atmosphere of a coronation wherein one is about to be crowned or one is ascending to take their rightful place on a throne! Air horns, confetti, placards and signs do not have a place at a graduation/commencement ceremony! Likewise, excessively loud, boisterous, yelling and cheering has no place at the graduation/commencement ceremony either! We ask that as you attend this ceremony that you imagine that it is being held in your Church, Mosque, Cathedral, Synagogue, or Temple, and Coliseum – NOT at a sports event or rock concert! We are confident that if everyone conduct themselves accordingly then, and only then, will we all be able to enjoy this momentous occasion to the fullest! As always, if you have any questions please feel free to call our main office at (850) 457-5257 or fax us at (850) 494-7297. I look forward to see you at one of our many upcoming events. BOOKER T. WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL—HOME OF THE MIGHTY WILDCATS! WILDCATS Wildcat Pride: Winding the Clock Forward by Mr. Jeremy Tompkins Wildcats it is hard to believe that we have just moved our clocks forward and that spring is here. As we move forward over the next few months there are many things that will be occurring around campus. I encourage each of you to get involved as this school year quickly comes to an end. With the school year coming to an end there are a few items that you need to be aware of, they are: discipline, bookkeeping, and senior news. The first item I would like to discuss is discipline. Every year as the weather gets warmer students begin to forget about the dress code. The dress code does not change with the weather, please make sure your student is dressed appropriately before coming to school. A copy of the Escambia County School District dress code may be found on the Escambia County School District website in the rights and responsibilities handbook. Tardies to school also continue to be an issue. It is very important that every student arrive to school on time. Each time they are late, valuable instructional time is lost. Please help us by addressing this problem with your student if it applies to them. Other than these two issues, major progress has been made with discipline this year. Major referrals are down and our school has been awarded Positive Behavioral Support model school status. We still have some tweaking to do on the process, but we are moving in the right direction. The second item to be discussed is bookkeeping. This is a reminder that all fines must be paid in order to participate in prom or graduation activities. If you are planning on attending Prom all fines must be paid before Friday April 13, 2012. Prom tickets go on sale Monday April 16, 2012 and Prom is Saturday April 21, 2012. All senior fines must be paid by Friday May 18, 2012. Senior caps and gowns will not be distributed to any student that has not paid their fines. All fines may be resolved through Mrs. Cravey’s office (school financial specialist). The final item to be discussed is senior news. In a senior assembly just a few weeks ago, the seniors unanimously voted for the dues. These dues will prevent students from having to fundraise for senior class expenses (senior video, AV equipment at the ceremony, honors chords, programs, etc.) The dues are $20.00 and must be paid by May 2, 2012. Once again these dues can be paid to our school financial specialist. Cap and gowns are a requirement for the graduation ceremony. If your student needs to purchase a cap and gown, they may do so at the Herff Jones office on 12th avenue. The phone number is 432-7464 and the current cost is $56.00. Additional information you need to know for seniors is listed in the table below. I look forward to a great end to the 2011-2012 school year. If I can do anything to assist you throughout the remainder of the year, just give me a call. I am always happy to assist you and as always remember it’s great to be a Wildcat! Academic Team Students on the BTWHS Academic Team practiced hard for the Emerald Coast Academic Tournament on February 25th at Choctawhatchee High School in Fort Walton Beach. They look forward to competing against Escambia County schools before the tournament season ends. Media Center News Voting for Florida Teens Read will begin after FCAT and continue until the end of April. Students need to have read at least three of the fifteen nominated books in order to vote for their favorite and attend the voting party, tentatively scheduled for May 3rd. Graduating seniors are honoring their school days with donations to Escambia County school libraries. Emily Rogers donated a complete hardback set of Nancy Drew mysteries, which found an eager home at the elementary level. Alexandra Kardasz donated 19 books to our manga collection. What a great way to say goodbye (and clear your bookshelf at the same time!) Please contact Mrs. Woolley at 475-5257 ext. 258 if you would like to make a donation. Books appropriate for high school collections in “like new” condition will be welcome for consideration. There were a total of 49 schools participating and our students most definitely set Pensacola in the map of many! It was for all, including me, a life-changing experience! We were a small group of 6, all participating for the first time. We participated in a total of 7 events and came back home with 5 trophies (only awarded to those who score the highest recognition) and 2 ribbons. I did not see any other school who did so well percentage wise! The Washington High Spanish Team came back home with 240 points (a perfect score on all events would have been 280). Tiffany Santiago made a perfect score on her poetry declamation and scored 36/40 in her impromptu speech. Virginia Burger scored a 38/40 in her impromptu speech. Christian Cheese and Tanner Williams both scored 36/40 each. And Charles Loesch scored a 34/40. If you happen to know these students, please congratulate them! Their hard work deserve merit. Gracias. Students will receive a copy of their course requests in May. If any changes are desired, course change forms will be available and must be submitted to guidance by June 15, 2012. No request can be honored unless students have obtained proper signature/approval. FCAT Writing for 9th and 10th graders was given on February 28, 2012. FCAT retake reading and math will be given April 9-13, 2012. FCAT reading for 9th and 10th graders will be April 16-19, 2012. Scores will be available in June. Parents will be given a window of time to pick up their child’s scores (with proper ID) when these reports are received on the school site. Retake scores will arrive before school ends and will be distributed to those juniors and seniors immediately. Counselors will adjust student schedules in the summer to include any remediation classes that may be required as a result of FCAT scores. Counselors will be available to meet with parents and students when they are working during the summer. Summer work dates for each counselor will be accessible on www.btwash.org and at the front office. Each student is given a copy of his/her transcript when the registration card is completed. Parents are encouraged to ask for this and to refer to it whenever there are questions about credits or GPA. GPA and credits change only twice each year: at end of first semester and at end of the school year. Identified juniors were given the PERT in February based on Florida Department of Education. Student scores on the Reading and Math sections of this PERT testing will determine the specific math and English classes that will be required of seniors next school year. Current juniors or their parents who have questions regarding this should contact Ms. Marilyn Wells, counselor for the Class of 2013. 10th and 11th graders took the college placement test (PERT) on our campus the first week of March for the purpose of qualifying for dual enrollment opportunities. Sophomores and juniors who qualified to test have received these results. Ms. Gibbs from PSC will be on our campus in April to register students who qualify for and plan to attend summer school at PSC for dual enrollment and for those rising seniors who plan to Early Admit at PSC in the fall. Ms. Gibbs will return to Washington in mid July, 8 A.M. -1 P.M. to register rising juniors and seniors who plan to part time dual at PSC in the fall. The exact date will be given to students when it is finalized. Students must come to Washington’s campus to register on the date that will be determined – they cannot register at PSC. Students who have completed sophomore year and are interested in dual enrollment should discuss criteria with their grade level counselor. To participate in dual, students should have completed sophomore year, have a 3.0 non-weighted GPA, and have passing scores on the PERT. Summer Opportunities: Students who need to replace failed classes or improve GPA should check with their counselor about the summer adult program. Students must be at least 16 years of age to participate in summer school through community school. Registration must be completed with the grade level counselor before school is out. Details about summer school opportunities will appear in the May newsletter. This will be the last summer school opportunity for high school students for grade and/or credit recovery per legislative action in Summer 2011. All students are encouraged to use the summer months to acquire community service hours. This activity must be something that reaches into the community and cannot be connected a church or synagogue worship service. Likewise, it cannot be a part of any organization for profit nor can it be baby-sitting for family or friends. Service hours are now required for all levels of Bright Futures Scholarships. For other scholarships that require a community service component, students should initiate a project or have intense and lengthy involvement in one meaningful activity that has a specific impact on others. Service hours are not required for graduation. AP Exams: Advanced Placement exams will be given May 9-18, 2012. Students will have an exam schedule and a student/parent information letter (Will also be available on S. Bordelon’s website). All AP exams will be given in Washington High School’s fine arts auditorium. Morning exams require the students to be seated at the testing site by 7:30 A.M. Afternoon exams have an 11:30 A.M. arrival time with start time at 12 noon. All AP students should check with their teachers before the testing date. They must be on time and follow all guidelines that are given from College Board. If students miss an exam, regardless of the reason, they must pay a $15.00 unused fee that is charged by College Board. This charge is in addition to the $87.00 fee that the state and school district pay for each student exam. Since exams are now on our campus, students are no longer excused from school on exam days. Students will report to regular classes after each morning exam, and they will attend morning classes until afternoon exams. BOOKER T. WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL—HOME OF THE MIGHTY WILDCATS! Senior Exams: WILDCATS 11 Ms. Andi Smith, records clerk, will go to senior classes to have seniors sign for the ONE college to receive the final end-of-year transcript. All students, including off campus dual students, must sign this form. No final transcript will be sent to any school at the end of the year unless this request is signed. Most colleges require that a transcript be on file before registration for fall classes can be completed. Seniors should have completed the Bright Futures Scholarship application by now at www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org. This on-line application must be completed before Bright Futures will evaluate a transcript. Seniors must apply BEFORE graduation date or they will forfeit all future eligibility for a Bright Futures Scholarship. For the first time this year, no Bright Futures monies will be released to colleges until those students have completed a FASFA. Registered students will receive award notifications via e-mail based on the evaluations that take place in February. Students will be re-evaluated in June for an award or to see if they have met requirements to upgrade to a higher level. Only seventh semester students who have been declared eligible by Bright Futures will be recognized at Senior Honors Night. Washington High School cannot determine eligibility – only Florida Department of Education can do that. Award letters should be brought to Mrs. Reeves by May 21, 2012 for recognition at Senior Honors Night on May 31, 2012. Students do not have to accept the award to be recognized. Parents of seniors should have completed the FAFSA financial aid forms by now. These forms are only available at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Both UWF and PSC offer assistance for completing these forms. Parents should contact the financial aid offices at either institution for information regardless of where you child may be attending post secondary school. Seniors who do not meet FCAT requirements for a standard high school diploma will receive a Certificate of Completion at graduation as long as all other graduation criteria are met. These students should schedule to retake the June 9, 2012 ACT test since the Florida Department of Education accepts 18 on Reading and 15 on Math to substitute for the FCAT if a student has not passed. Students may also return to take the October 2012 FCAT by calling to register prior to testing date. Mr. Jeremy Tompkins, assistant principal, is the contact person for all senior activities that are non-academic. This includes graduation ceremonies, senior practice, invitations, caps and gowns, etc. He may be contacted via e-mail on the school web site or at extension 223. Senior parents are encouraged to contact Mrs. Reeves regarding questions about their child’s graduation status. Students must earn 26 credits, pass required classes, have a non-weighted 2.0 GPA, and pass the reading and math parts of the FCAT or ACT in order to earn a standard high school diploma. Seniors and senior parents are reminded that all Florida Virtual School grades must be complete so that Mrs. Reeves receives these from FLVS by May 25, 2012. Senior final rankings and GPA will be based on all eight semesters of high school work. This will not be available until final grades are posted. Graduation seniors will be recognized with four levels of honors. Graduation tassels cannot be distributed until final GPA’s are calculated, but the following criteria are used: Summa Cum Laude – Gold tassel: 4.0 or higher weighted GPA. Magna Cum Laude – Silver tassel: 3.85 – 3.99 weighted GPA. Cum Laude – Bronze tassel: 3.5 – 3.849 weighted GPA. Laude – White tassel: 3.0 – 3.49 weighted GPA BOOKER T.
