Grade 1 News Language Arts Mercur y Math Science Feb./Mar. 2013 Social Studies Important Dates: Mar. 11-14— Exams Mar. 18—Q4 Begins Mar. 28—House Day Mar. 29—Easter Egg Hunt Cool Science! Dear Parents, It’s hard to believe Q3 is almost over...exams are just around the corner. In Language Arts, we’ve continued learning all about verbs. We worked hard in our explanatory writing unit, making sure we tell things in the right order. We made our own unique finger puppets and have been designing our own scenery and working on puppet shows. We also started our Flat Stanley unit and are getting ready to send him off to Canada on March 11. We will be starting a comparative writing unit soon. In Math we continued working on decomposing and place value of 3 digit numbers. We are now beginning a unit on data management and graphing and will be doing a survey/graphing project! In Science we did many fun experiments learning all about matter (See left). Ask your child about any of these experiments: Does Matter Take up Space? Can you dissolve sugar, salt, and sand in water? How do you make play dough? How do you make rock candy? Can you dissolve a gas in a liquid? In Social Studies we have been learning about how machines, tools, and technology help us do work. We continued to learn about the Netherlands for International Day and did some excellent impressions of Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Sunflowers paintings. Please check homework books for daily behavior “faces” and if you haven’t already... add “Flat Kpis Stanley” as a friend on Facebook so you can follow his journey to Canada, America, and Lebanon!
