Course Descriptions - Missouri Common Ground Alliance

OSHA 10-Hour Construction Certification
Make it official! The OSHA 10-Hour Construction training program certifies employees to recognize and
correct jobsite hazards. Content includes education about the four major hazards on construction jobsites:
falls, electrocution, caught-in-between and struck-by. Instructors will also cover personal protective
equipment, health hazards, employee rights, and the function of OSHA. Missouri law requires that this
training be provided to all employees performing construction work on state or local government
construction contracts.
Get Your Dirt Cert: Excavation Competent Person Certification
Get certified and learn from the best! Preventing injuries and incidents should be a top priority on every
excavation and trenching jobsite. OSHA requires that a “competent person” perform routine safety
inspections of excavations. This course provides excavation competent person certification and includes
detailed training on the identification and control of hazards found on excavation jobsites.
Stakeholder Roundtable: Enforcement and Dispute Resolution
Since 2013, the Missouri Attorney General’s Office has initiated enforcement actions against hundreds of
excavators and utilities for violations of the Missouri One Call statutes. These actions were designed to be
punitive and help address the damages to the underground utility infrastructure that citizens and
businesses depend on. Attend to learn what new efforts have taken place and add your voice to the
process to help make the enforcement more equitable. Additionally, stakeholders will discuss the dispute
resolution process as it currently exists and solicit opinions for how best to resolve disputes between
parties without visiting the court room.
Locator Training: Finding What You Can’t See
Know what’s below and learn from the best! This highly-interactive and hands-on session is provided by
field locating expert Travis Beran. Content includes an examination of the theory, fundamentals and
technology used to locate underground utilities. Locating equipment and new technology will be
discussed. Dress appropriately because this session will include activities outdoors.
The Power of Electricity: What To Do When Lines Are Down
Overhead or underground, electric lines have the potential to be extraordinarily dangerous when workers
get careless or complacent. Unsafe digging or machine placement leads to employee injury and death,
equipment damage and interrupted electric service. What happens when the person responsible for
repairing the electric lines becomes a victim of electric shock or other medical emergency while they’re
40’ in the air? Watch as linemen demonstrate how they rescue their colleagues in a high-stress,
dangerous, and life-threatening event where time is the enemy.
Jobsite Emergencies: How To Respond, Plan, or Prevent Catastrophes
When things go wrong, remember that you’ll be one of the first people on the scene of any jobsite
accident. Are you or your coworkers prepared? Indecision, lack of supplies and inadequate training can
make a bad situation worse. Be prepared to help! Learn basic steps your crews can take to be prepared for
and respond to damage, injury or medical incidents.
Tons of Fun: Heavy Equipment Inspections and Safety
Hot dust & diesel fuel! Earthmoving equipment is unforgiving and dangerous. Motorized equipment can
create jobsite hazards like blind spots, noise, roll over and struck-by. Presented by a top heavy equipment
safety expert, this session analyzes a number of heavy construction equipment accidents involving
scrapers, loaders, off-the-road trucks, dozers, back hoes and motor graders.
Buried Alive! Trench Rescue Docudrama
Take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see a real trench rescue in progress. The drama
and risk is as real as it gets! This session is a unique opportunity to watch a LIVE trench rescue effort. See
the Springfield Fire Department perform a real technical trench rescue. Learn about working safely
around trenches and excavation. But you’ll also see the human factors experienced in a trench emergency
– the emotions, stress and anxiety. You’ll see how a trench collapse becomes a difficult, high-stress
technical rescue operation. Witness the drama unfold as coworkers, family members, paramedics, funeral
homes, law enforcement, and others recreate a one of a kind event guaranteed to change the way you
think about safety!
Truck and Trailer Inspections: What Is DOT Looking For?
This is a great opportunity for excavators to learn the latest commercial vehicle safety requirements.
Content includes driver and company safety measurements, review Level 1 inspections, how roadside
inspections are conducted including out-of-service criteria as well as a review of load securement.
Presented by Missouri’s top fleet safety experts, this session is a great review for any contractor,
municipality, county or excavator that uses trucks & trailers to move employees, materials and machines.
One Call Standards from A to Z: Marking Standards, ITIC and One Call Technology
The One Call system is relatively simple, yet highly complex. From compliance with the law for
excavators and utilities to the tools and resources offered to help make your job easier, Missouri One Call
wants to make certain that you’re familiar with the system and how to properly utilize it to protect
yourself. Learn what you can do to improve efficiencies leveraging technology and what standards and
best practices are available from recognized industry experts.
Save a Life! American Heart Association CPR & First Aid Certification
Get certified! Learn how to save the life of a coworker or family member! The experts at Cox Health will
teach participants how to detect and respond to an unresponsive coworker that’s not breathing. Learn
traditional CPR on manikins, as well as the new hands-only method. Content will also include responding
to personal medical concerns like diabetic, stroke, environmental and sting / bite emergencies. Content
also includes treatment of trauma injuries like bleeding. Instructors will discuss contacting 911 and
important information dispatchers will need to better help the patient. Listen to recorded 911 phone calls
so participants can better understand the questions which will be asked by emergency dispatchers.
Trenching Technologies: New Solutions For Safer Sites
Tight spots, close buildings, alleys and crossing utilities make it difficult to drop traditional trench boxes.
Nobody argues that preventing trench collapse is a top concern for excavators. New trench tech is
becoming more accessible and available, making excavation work safer and more efficient. In this session
you’ll learn how new technologies can help prevent collapse, utility damage and employee injury.
Participants will also learn about OSHA trench safety requirements, and how safety can be improved
through new types of gear!
BOOM! How To Work Safely Around Pipelines & Natural Gas
This class is HOT! Learn from pipeline experts in the classroom, then convoy to City Utility’s Fulbright
Training Center to watch LIVE as instructors demonstrate the dangers of unsafe excavating practices.
Witness the explosiveness and power of natural gas and how rescue teams extract and respond to pipeline
and gas incidents. Participants will learn about pipelines and gas utility infrastructure and how seemingly
small gas line strikes can cause catastrophic consequences. Learn steps your company should take to
minimize risk of hitting a dangerous underground gas facility and how you can partner with companies in
your area to work more safely.
Close Quarters: Confined Space Competent Person Training
Get certified: Confined spaces are silent killers. Are your employees trained to recognize confined spaces
and the hazards within? Your nose cannot smell low oxygen. Your eyes cannot see stratification. Air in
confined spaces can contain odorless, colorless gases that provide no warning to their presence.
Participants will identify confined spaces in construction, review confined space safety basics, training
requirements, changes in regulation and take part in a confined space entry demonstration. Learn how
sewers, wells, tanks and underground vaults kill employees, and safety precautions each crew must take
before entering a manway.
Staying Out of Trouble: Legal Liabilities for Business Owners
The threats of lawsuits are always a fear for many business owners. General liability for accidents,
workers compensation lawsuits, damages and claims for utility hits, and discrimination and other
employee related matters are commonplace. Unfortunately, these liabilities can significantly impact a
business’ bottom line. Learn what you can do as a business owner or company executive to reduce that
liability and protect your company from the threat of yet another lawsuit.
