R E P O R T
The future is today.
Dear Friends,
For the 7 million stroke survivors in the U.S., the future is today. Stroke does not define who
they are or where they are going. However, stroke does present challenges and it is the
role of National Stroke Association to assist in overcoming these challenges and providing
opportunity. We do so in a number of ways:
• Increasing access to care
• Public awareness
• Post-stroke support
• Survivor dignity
• Giving voice through advocacy
On the pages of our 2012 annual report, you’ll read more about the positive impact we are
having as an organization. But equally important is our desire to salute the partners, donors,
volunteers, advocates and staff who truly make our impact possible.
On the accompanying pages, you’ll find that we provide valuable information in the form of
snapshots that provide statistical insight about the work we engage in each day. Remember
that behind every statistic is a stroke survivor who has a unique story.
Their stories of hope and optimism are inspiring and remind us that after a stroke, each
person writes his or her own new story—a story made up of individual chapters filled with
health challenges but more importantly, chapters that abound with new strategies for coping,
adapting, growing and succeeding.
As you read their stories, I trust you will join me in appreciating not only the vital need for
National Stroke Association’s ongoing work, but also the necessity of never forgetting that
every stroke survivor’s story is being newly written each day. For them, the future is today.
Sincerely,
Jim Baranski

A Story of
Courage
In 2012, we met Kathy Howard.
Five years ago, Kathy had a serious ischemic stroke, which left her unable to walk and took away all
sensation on her left side from her head to her toes.
Kathy thought her life was over, but she made progress and set out to learn as much as she could about
the effects of stroke and preventing stroke. She picked up a copy of StrokeSmart®, our free magazine.
StrokeSmart is all about lifestyle, recovery, prevention and inspiration and it gave her the medicine and
motivation she needed.
Since that day five years ago, Kathy has relearned to walk and drive, and even found her dream job. She
realized that the incidence of stroke in her community is extremely high and now educates people on how to
recognize stroke signs and symptoms, reduce risk and support survivors and families in their life after stroke.
Kathy says, “I have found National Stroke Association to
be THE source I send new survivors to for information
on nearly any stroke-related topic. If you go to their
website (www.stroke.org), you can get information about
prevention and everything that goes with recovery, see
other survivors talk about their recovery and progress, and
learn about latest research developments—it’s all there!”
Meet Kathy at www.stroke.org/faces_Kathy.

A Love
Story
Caregiving is a tough job, but caregivers are essential to a stroke survivor’s recovery. Caregivers provide
personal care, assist with appointments and medications, manage financial and transportation matters, and
provide physical, mental and emotional support.
Until recently, Marsha Dickerson had never known anyone who’d had a stroke. But her husband was
diagnosed with a right ischemic stroke (a blood clot in the right side of his brain) and given treatment at the
hospital. The stroke left him with left-sided weakness—he couldn’t move his left arm or leg and the left side
of his face drooped.
Marsha soon realized that the stroke had drastically changed her and her husband’s lives. She would
continue to be a wife and confidante, but the stroke meant that she would also have to become an advocate,
supporter, chauffeur—in short, a caregiver. And the job would be 24/7.
While her husband was still in rehabilitation, Marsha picked up National Stroke Association’s educational
materials about stroke, which had been distributed by the hospital. A few months later, while hungrily
searching for even more information about stroke, she found CarelivingSM Community, an online community
where caregivers can connect, share and support one another. She was relieved to find a place where she
could learn to be a better caregiver—for both her husband and herself.
Marsha says, “I didn’t have to wait for the monthly stroke
support group meeting. I could get daily support, I’d go to
Careliving Community and several caregivers would have
made entries at midnight or later. Caregivers openly shared
experiences. What books and articles are you reading? What’s
your experience with therapists? How was your day?”

An Unfinished
Story
For 27 years now, we have found an outstanding community partner in OSF St. Francis Medical Center in
Peoria, Ill. They recognize the life-saving importance of excellent stroke care.
Their stroke team has a “FASTer” protocol—a system of notifications, team assembly and efficient diagnosis
for the best care for every stroke patient, every time. In 2012, OSF even matched the world record for fastest
stroke treatment: nine minutes.
Then they beat it—from the moment the stroke patient came through the door to diagnosis to treatment,
only five minutes passed. This efficient, timely care can be the difference between lifelong disability and
little to no deficits.
It seems that OSF has the same philosophy in their work as we do in ours. Says Jan Jahnel, OSF’s chief stroke
nurse coordinator, and Teresa Swanson Devlin, stroke coordinator, “you can throw all the money in the world at
[your stroke program], but you need team dedication and passion to make it work.”
National Stroke Association is a part of their team. We help OSF provide excellent care by keeping them up
to date on stroke guidelines and providing materials and online conferences to help train their staff. With our
education and support, OSF became the first hospital in Illinois and second in the U.S. to receive elite national
accreditation and recognition for stroke excellence—the Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification.
We also make sure they have resources to provide support to stroke survivors and life-saving stroke education
for their community.
Jan says, “We care about our community [and] we have so much to offer
at our hospital—but we can’t do what we need to unless people get here!
We really promote National Stroke Association’s FAST message and the
importance of calling 9-1-1.”
