STUDIES AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION) (JUC)
1918-1991
Administrative history: the Joint University Council for Social Studies was
established in 1918 as part of the reconstruction programme at the end of the First
World War. It was a body financed by the universities themselves, with the object of
developing and coordinating the work of the new social studies departments.
The Council's title was altered to the Joint University Council for Social Studies and
Public Administration with the formation of a standing public administration subcommittee in 1936. The Council itself continued to deal directly with social
administration matters until 1955, when a Social Administration Committee and a
Public Administration Committee were set up in parallel under a new constitution.
The Council's title was changed to the Joint University Council for Social and Public
Administration. From 1966 the committees carried on all the main business, and
the Council itself took on a largely formal character. A third major sub-committee
the Social Work Education Committee, was added in 1976.
The purpose of the Council has been to develop and coordinate the work of higher
education institutions in the three subject fields of public administration, social policy
and social work. It has provided a national forum for the discussion of academic
issues such as the contents of curricula, matters relating to resources and standards
in teaching and research, and other issues of common interest in these subject
fields. It has also underwritten and supported research activities, including
workshops and conferences.
Immediate source of acquisition: these records were deposited in the Centre by
the Joint University Council in 1992.
Access restrictions: there are no restrictions on access to these papers.
