Disabled Access Guide for Ashworth 3.
This building has been in part designed for use by persons in
wheelchairs and persons who have difficulty with mobility or
are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available.
Introduction.
The Ashworth Laboratories consist of 3 interlinked buildings which house two
Institutes of the School of Biological Sciences. These are the Institute of
Evolutionary Biology and the Institute of Immunology & Infection Research.
Ashworth 3 contains laboratories, meeting rooms and staff offices.
Ashworth 3 is a secure building which requires a university smartcard to
access. All visitors must report to a general office which is located within
Ashworth 1 in order to gain access, or alternatively arrange to be met near the
general office by their host. A Guide to Access for Ashworth 1 is available
from: http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/estates-buildings/buildingsinformation/disability.
Location.
Ashworth 3 is located within what is referred to as the King’s Buildings
Campus of the University of Edinburgh which is well served by public
transport. The King’s Buildings Campus is within approximately three miles of
the city centre and is within approximately two miles of the main student
residences at Pollock Halls.
The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the city centre.
The nearest bus stops are located on Mayfield Road approximately 110
metres from Ashworth 3. The number 67 Lothian bus service stops on
Mayfield Road and the number 41 Lothian bus service stops within the
campus (see map on the following page). Details of timetables are available
from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from:
http://lothianbuses.com/timetables/KB_Bus_Guide_Sept-2013.pdf. University
staff and students also have access to a university bus service. Details of this
service can be found online from: http://www.ed.ac.uk/staffstudents/students/shuttlebus.
Persons arriving by vehicle can access Ashworth 2 from West Mains Road via
Gateway 2, or alternatively from Mayfield Road via Gateway 3 (see map on
the following page).
Persons with mobility difficulties and wheelchair users are able to access
Ashworth 3 at the main entrance or the secondary entrance (see map on the
following page). Wheelchair access is not currently recommended without

Parking.
Within the King’s Buildings Campus there are numerous parking spaces.
Anyone wishing to park within a university bay must display a valid parking
permit. This includes staff, students, visitors and contractors.
There are university car parks located at the front of Ashworth 2 and at the
front of the ENG Sanderson Building (see location map). Both car parks are
suitably surfaced for wheelchair users and the car park located at the front of
the ENG Sanderson Building contains a disabled parking bay. Please note
that wheelchair access from these car parks to Ashworth 3 is currently via a
road which does not incorporate a pedestrian crossing.
