UniPrint Version 7.0
Introduction
Introduction
The UniPrint Suite is a comprehensive printing solution for Server-based
Computing (SbC) and virtualized desktop environments. UniPrint offers a
printing solution that provides end users with the flexibility to print to any
type of device from a Citrix and/or Remote Desktop Services (formerly
known as Terminal Services) session with the additional benefits of Portable
Document Format (PDF).
With UniPrint, printing to network or local printers, USB printers or even
specialized devices, is all performed by a single Universal Printer Driver,
eliminating extra configuration and confusing options for end users. The basic
UniPrint solution (UniPrint Server) supports both RDS and Citrix
architectures but there is also a solution designed for RDS only. UniPrint also
has three other printing solutions: Gateway Edition, VDI Edition and Host
Edition. These editions provide the functionality of UniPrint to support thin
and remote clients, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and mixed host systemWindows environment printing.
This Administrator’s Guide is a reference manual for the following UniPrint
products:
• UniPrint Server
• UniPrint Terminal Server Edition (TSE)
• UniPrint Gateway Edition
• UniPrint Gateway TSE
• UniPrint VDI Edition
• UniPrint VDI Edition with Thin Client Support
UniPrint Server, Terminal Server Edition and VDI Edition all follow the same
installation instructions. For UniPrint Gateway TSE and UniPrint VDI with
Thin Client Support follow the same installation procedures as UniPrint
Gateway Edition.

UniPrint Version 7.0
What’s New in 7.0.3?
UniPrint Server
Redesigned
UniPrint
Management
Console
Improved
Licensing
Scheme
The UniPrint Management Console has been redesigned to improve
efficiency and usability, making it more intuitive to use and configure
UniPrint components on remote servers as well as the local server. Licenses
can also be managed from any server. Debugging options have been moved to
the Components screen, under Properties & Settings.
UniPrint is still licensed per application server, however, applying a different
license file on each individual application server is no longer required.
UniPrint now utilizes a license server component that is installed on one of
the UniPrint Spool Servers and the license file is applied to this designated
license server. Network administrators also have the ability to monitor and
track license usage in real time. The ability to view and save a detailed
snapshot of license usage has also been added.
UniPrint Gateway Edition
Support for Thin
Client USB
Printers
Extending the support for thin-client devices running Windows XPe/
Embedded Standard, UniPrint now also supports USB printers attached to
thin-client devices running Windows CE/Embedded CE.
Improved Printer
Properties
Support
For printer properties like paper tray, forms and resolution, the actual printer
property value is now imported from the native printer driver.
Font Replication
Font replication is a new functionality that further reduces print job size,
improves overall printing speed and reduces bandwidth consumption. Once a
day at a pre scheduled time UniPrint queries all application servers for newly
installed fonts and replicates them to all print servers. This feature creates a
smaller print job and improves the overall printing speed and print job quality.
Additionally, fonts can be replicated on demand.
Support for
Secure Printing
UniPrint now supports HP printers with secure printing capability where
print jobs are not printed until users enter their PIN codes at the physical
printer. Currently, the following printer drivers are supported: HP Universal
Printing PCL 5, HP Universal Printing PCL 5 (v 5.0 or later), HP Universal
Printing PCL 6, HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (v 5.0 or later), HP Universal
Printing PS and HP Universal Printing PS (v 5.0 or later).
Support for
Advanced Printer
Functions
Network administrators can now create unique printer profiles with different
combinations of advanced printer functionality (such as stapling, hole
punching, binding, etc.) enabled according to users’ specific printer
requirements.
Chapter 1: Introduction
UniPrint PrintPAL
3
UniPrint PrintPAL 7.0 has been integrated into this latest version. PrintPAL is
a network object-to-printer mapping utility that provides a simple user
interface that enables network administrators to control or restrict which
Gateway printers a user can access during their application server session.

Installing & Removing UniPrint
Installing & Removing UniPrint
UniPrint Server and UniPrint TSE support rich clients. When a user prints
using the UniPrint printer driver, a PDF document is created and sent to the
connected client using Citrix ICA or Microsoft RDP virtual channel
technology. The UniPrint Client that is installed on the end user’s machine
spools the PDF print job using client-side printer drivers.
UniPrint Gateway Edition, UniPrint Gateway TSE and UniPrint VDI
Edition support both rich and thin clients. With thin clients, when a user
prints using the UniPrint printer driver, a PDF document is created and sent
to the UniPrint Spool Server which then routes the print job to the
appropriate UniPrint Print Server.
There are three main components that make up UniPrint 7.0:
• UniPrint Spool Server
• UniPrint Print Server
• UniPrint Server
Planning Your UniPrint Installation

•
•
•
•
UniPrint Server
Microsoft Windows Vista.
Microsoft Windows 7.
Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
Microsoft Windows Server 2008.
UniPrint Server requires .NET Framework 2.0 or later and one of the
following:
• Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Terminal Services installed in
Application Server Mode.
• Microsoft Windows Server 2008 with Terminal Services role installed.

with .NET Framework 2.0 or later and one of the following software
requirements:
• Microsoft Windows XP Professional.
• Microsoft Windows Vista.
• Microsoft Windows 7.
Recommended Installation Order
Rich-client
Solution
For rich-client support, UniPrint Server, TSE and VDI consists of three
required components and the recommended installation order is as follows:
1. UniPrint Spool Server (one is designated as the license server). See
”Installing UniPrint Spool Server” on page 9 for detailed instructions.
2. Ensure that client printer mapping is disabled on the terminal server
before installing UniPrint Server. See ”Disabling Client Printer
Mapping on the Terminal Server” on page 7 for instructions.
3. UniPrint Server. See”Installing UniPrint Server” on page 14 for
instructions.
4. UniPrint Client. Refer to the UniPrint Client Administrator’s Guide
included in the UniPrint Client download package for information on
installing and configuring UniPrint Client.
In this solution, the UniPrint Spool Server acts as a license server and validates
UniPrint licenses when each UniPrint Server machine connects.
Thin Client &
Combined Thin
and Rich-client
Solution
For environments where only thin clients or both types of clients exist,
UniPrint Gateway, UniPrint Gateway TSE and UniPrint VDI with Thin
Client Support can be utilized. The recommended installation order is as
follows:
Chapter 2: Installing & Removing UniPrint
7
1. UniPrint Spool Server (NOTE: Only one is designated as the license
server and only one can have PrintPAL Server installed. The license
server component and PrintPAL Server do not need to be installed on
the same UniPrint Spool Server appliance.) See ”Installing UniPrint
Spool Server” on page 9.
2. UniPrint Print Server. See”Installing UniPrint Print Server” on
page 12 for detailed instructions.
3. Ensure that client printer mapping is disabled on the terminal server
before installing UniPrint Server. See ”Disabling Client Printer
Mapping on the Terminal Server” on page 7 for instructions.
4. UniPrint Server. See ”Installing UniPrint Server” on page 14 for
instructions.
In this scenario, UniPrint Spool Server acts not only as a license server but
also as a relay between the UniPrint Print Server and UniPrint Server
machines. When the UniPrint Print Server and UniPrint Server components
start, they immediately try to establish a connection with the UniPrint Spool
Server.
If you are upgrading to UniPrint 7.0 from UniPrint 6.1.5, see ”Planning your
UniPrint Upgrade” on page 43 for detailed upgrade planning and installation
instructions.
Cluster Environment
UniPrint Gateway Edition supports full redundancy by enabling clustering of
its Spool Server and Print Server as separate clusters with Windows. For
installation guidelines on installing UniPrint Gateway in a cluster
environment, see Chapter 3: ”UniPrint Gateway in a Failover Cluster” on
page 25.
Disabling Client Printer Mapping on the Terminal Server
It is highly recommended that client printer mapping be disabled prior to
installing UniPrint. The following instructions assume that the terminal server
role has been added to Windows Server 2008.
1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools and then click Server
Manager.
2. In the console tree, expand Roles and then Terminal Services.
3. Click Terminal Services Configuration.
8

client printer to disable these options.
7. Click Apply and then click OK.
Chapter 2: Installing & Removing UniPrint
9
Installing UniPrint Spool Server
UniPrint Spool Server is the first UniPrint component to be installed in all
scenarios. The UniPrint Spool Server acts as a license server and validates
UniPrint licenses when each of the UniPrint Server machines connects. In a
UniPrint Gateway environment, the UniPrint Spool Server also acts as a print
job router and print queues are shared from the UniPrint Spool Server to user
sessions on the application server. By installing the UniPrint Spool Server
first, connectivity can be verified among the remaining components
(UniPrint Server and UniPrint Print Server).
Non-interactive command line installation of UniPrint Spool Server is
available. For command line installation instructions, see ”Installing UniPrint
Spool Server from the Command Line” on page 11.
The following instructions assume that you are installing on Windows Server
2008. If you are installing on another platform, you will need to adjust the
steps to account for any interface differences. Consult the product
documentation for your operating system.
NOTE
When installing UniPrint Spool Server on Windows 2008 or later with UAC
enabled and you are not logged in as an administrator, run the bootstrap,
Setup.exe.
1. Log on to the server with administrative rights.
2. Run the installation program UPSpoolServer703.msi or Setup.exe.
10

UniPrint Version 7.0
Installing UniPrint Print Server
In a UniPrint Gateway, Gateway TSE and VDI environment, UniPrint Print
Server is the second UniPrint component to be installed. UniPrint Print
Server is responsible for rendering print jobs and directing them to the
appropriate printer.
In enterprises where users are located in different geographic regions or
where printing requirements vary greatly from branch office to branch office,
UniPrint Print Servers should be stationed remotely. Deploying multiple
UniPrint Print Servers has several advantages:
• It distributes the printing workload between remote locations.
• It accommodates differences in regional printing environments.
• It reduces bandwidth consumption by transferring compressed PDF
files instead of raw data files across the network.
Some Lexmark/HP printer models have the capability to interpret PDF files
directly without rendering print jobs into raw data files. These printers are
considered UniPrint-ready and when defined on the UniPrint Spool Server,
each printer acts as its own UniPrint Print Server. Deploying multiple
UniPrint-ready Lexmark/HP printers has the following advantages:
• It reduces overall bandwidth consumption from server to printer.
• It can accept PDF print jobs directly without the need for a separate
print server or native printer driver.
For a list of UniPrint-ready Lexmark/HP printers, visit the UniPrint Web site
www.uniprint.net.
Before installing UniPrint Print Server, ensure that your server meets the
minimum system requirements.
NOTE
When installing UniPrint Print Server on Windows Vista or later with UAC

In a failover cluster, it is recommended that UniPrint Print Server be installed
on the local hard disk drive on every node, not the shared Quorum, for
failover to function properly.
Before installing UniPrint Print Server in a failover cluster, ensure that your
cluster is correctly set up and working properly. For more information on
setting up a print server in a failover cluster, refer to http://

UniPrint Version 7.0
4. In the Configuration tab, you can set the following properties:
Page size
This option sets the default paper size for the printer. The various paper sizes
and forms listed match those supported by UniPrint and include standard sizes
as well as any custom forms defined on the application server. For a full list of
paper sizes supported by UniPrint, see ”Paper Sizes” on page 117.(Default is
Letter; User Configurable)
To define a custom form on the application (Citrix/RDS) server:
1. Click Start and then click Printers.
2. Point to any white space in the Printers dialog box, right-click and
select Server Properties.
3. In the Forms tab, enable the Create a new form option and specify
a Form name and the appropriate measurements.
4. Click Save Form to create the custom form.
Chapter 5: UniPrint Tools and Utilities
61
Once the custom form is defined on the application server, it will be available
in UniPrint’s Page Size list.
To use the Custom paper size during a user session:
1. Invoke the Print dialog box from any application.
2. Select UniPrint from the Printer list and bring up the Printing
Preferences dialog box.
3. On the Configuration tab, select Custom from the Paper size list
and enter the appropriate Width and Length (in millimeters)
information.
4. Click OK to close the UniPrint Printing Preferences dialog box
and print.
Resolution
The resolution for a document can be set to 75, 150, 300, 600, or 1200 dots
per inch (dpi). This option affects mainly image resolution but text precision
can also be improved by increasing this value. The designated printer must, of
course, be capable of printing at the desired resolution setting. (Default is 300
dpi; User Configurable)
Orientation
The orientation of a document can be set to either Portrait or Landscape.
Portrait orients the print job vertically while Landscape orients the print job
horizontally. Applications that set this parameter internally take precedence.
Microsoft Word, for example, sets the Layout Orientation internally. (Default
is Portrait; User Configurable)
Dimensions (mm)
For custom forms you can define the width and height in millimeters.
Physical Margins (mm)
Most printers have a minimum physical margin outside of which they cannot
generate any output. Each printer’s mechanical design dictates the size of this
printable area and the size of the margins. Applications use this value to
prevent users from drawing outside the printable area. Horizontal specifies
the margin from the left and right edge of the paper. Vertical specifies the
margin from the top and bottom edge of the paper. (Default is 6mm; User
Configurable)
62
UniPrint Version 7.0
NOTE
For users using Adobe Reader on their client workstations to process print
jobs, setting Adobe’s Page Scaling option to anything other than None may
affect the margins set in the documents.
Paper Source
For the UniPrint printer this option sets the paper tray source. The available
options are Auto Select, Manual Feed, Envelope Feed and up to six Tray
selections. For UniPrint Gateway printers, the options displayed may differ
since they are imported from the native printer driver installed on the
UniPrint Print Server. (Default is Auto Select; User Configurable)
Double sided printing
This option sets the double-sided printing functionality. The available options
are Off (print on one side), Flip pages up and Flip pages sideways. Flip pages
up refers to tablet style documents and Flip pages sideways refers to book style
documents. The designated printer must have duplexing capabilities. (Default
is Off; User Configurable)
Auto Center
When set, document content will be centered on the page both horizontally
and vertically. This option is only applicable to UniPrint Gateway printers.
(Default is On; User Configurable)
Fit to page
Reduces each page to fit a specified paper size for printing purposes only; this
option shrinks the content in the print output but does not actually reduce
the document size. To change the document size and save it as a PDF file,
select Scale to Fit in the Resizing option. This option is only applicable to
UniPrint Gateway printers. (Default is Off; User Configurable)
Resizing
Although PDF files can be created as large as 38 100 000 cm in either
direction, most desktop printers cannot print large documents. To print
oversized documents you can Scale to Fit on a specified paper size, set
Chapter 5: UniPrint Tools and Utilities
63
scaling to a % of actual size by a specified percentage, or you can print out
Multi-pages per sheet, also known as N-up printing, and specify the
number of pages per sheet. Multi-pages per sheet is done intelligently to
maximize legibility with the number of pages per sheet selected and the
original orientation of the document. Resizing changes the document size so
that it can be saved as a PDF. (Default is None; User Configurable)
5. In the Fonts & Images tab, you can define the following properties:
Postscript emulation
Some applications query the printer and modify their drawing operations if
the printer is a PostScript printer to produce higher quality images. Enabling
this option emulates the UniPrint printer driver as a PostScript printer to the
application. This is particularly useful when printing documents with vector
graphics such as WordArt objects or semi-transparent backgrounds from
Microsoft Office. (Default is Enabled; User Configurable)
Font options
Full font embedding enables the driver to include all TrueType and Type 1
(PostScript) fonts used by the document in the output PDF file. This results in
larger files but ensures a consistent look of the document on any platform.
64
UniPrint Version 7.0
Minimal font embedding enables the driver to include only portions of the
font file that are used by the document. The options are as follows:
• Standard fonts: If enabled, the UniPrint driver will embed Arial and
Times New Roman font files. These fonts are not embedded by
default as they are provided with Adobe Reader. (Default is Disabled;
User Configurable)
• Licensed fonts: If enabled, the UniPrint driver will embed licensed
fonts that are installed on the application server. However, the fonts
may not be embedded if the font license agreement prohibits
embedding. (Default is Disabled; User Configurable)
• Unicode fonts: If enabled, the UniPrint driver will convert
characters that are not in Western European or US character sets (such
as Eastern European and Far Eastern characters). This conversion
tends to increase the file size. (Default is Disabled; User Configurable)
Color options
The following describes each available color option when printing. (Default is
Color; User Configurable)
• Grayscale: This option is optimized for black and white image
printing. It will convert color images into shades of black and white
that best fits the original image.
• Color: This option is best for printers that utilize R(Red), G(Green),
B(Blue) color space and is also recommended for documents that will
be displayed online or viewed on a monitor.
• CMYK: This option works best for printers that utilize the C(Cyan),
M(Magenta), Y(Yellow) and K(Black) color space.
Black and White compression
The following is a description of each available compression scheme. (Default
is Default; User Configurable)
• Default: Does not compress black and white images.
• CCITT Fax Group 4: This algorithm is recommended to reduce
the size of black and white images. Image quality is not affected by this
type of compression but file sizes can be greatly reduced.
Color image compression
The following is a description of each available compression scheme. (Default
is Automatic; User Configurable)
• Default: Makes use of color palettes to reduce the overall size of all
images. This algorithm works well as long as the number of colors in
the images do not exceed 256.
• 256: Computes the most used 256 colors in an image and replaces all
other color pixels by their closest match. This compression algorithm
works very well with most applications but is relatively slow on large
images with a greater number of colors.
Chapter 5: UniPrint Tools and Utilities
•
•
65
JPEG: Produces excellent results with real life true color images with
a small distortion of the source image. Since it removes image data and
may reduce image quality, compressing images that have already been
compressed using JPEG compression will lead to additional loss of
information. It is, therefore, not recommended for graphics other than
photographs. The Image quality box allows users to choose from
level 1 to 9. Level 1 produces lower quality images with very large
compression ratios. Level 9 produces higher quality images with
medium compression ratios. The default level is 7, which produces
image quality suitable for most situations.
Automatic: With this compression algorithm, each image is analyzed
separately to determine the best suited compression algorithm. The
best suited compression algorithm is then applied to the individual
image. The Image quality selection box appears, allowing users to
choose between Maximum, High, Medium, Low and Minimum. The
default level is Maximum, which will provide optimal results.

Management Console and cannot be disabled. These settings always have the
lowest priority. To enforce machine settings, clear all other alternate source
check boxes.
Network Connections > Sessions (UniPrint Server only)
Protocol
UniPrint supports two virtual channel protocols: RDP and ICA. Based on the
connecting client’s protocol, UniPrint creates a private, protocol-specific
virtual channel between the application server and the client device for
transferring rendered print jobs. Available options include:
• RDP: Does not require Citrix to be installed on the RDS server.
• ICA Virtual Channel: Does not require client drive mapping to be
enabled on the Citrix server.
• Client Drive Mapping: Requires client drive mapping to be
enabled on the Citrix server and is compatible with both Windows
and non-Windows clients.
• Mac Client: Allows a Macintosh machine to access an application
server.
To change the order UniPrint uses when auto detecting the transfer protocol,
click the protocol name and then click the arrow buttons to move the selected
protocol up and down in the list. Only the first detected transfer protocol is
used. (Default is RDP, ICA Virtual Channel, Client Drive Mapping, Mac Client)

Pass-Through
Selecting this option allows UniPrint to treat this application server as a passthrough client, routing print jobs printed from another application server that
has UniPrint Server installed. As a pass-through client, UniPrint spools print
jobs through chained ICA/RDP sessions where users connect from one ICA/
RDP session to another by launching a second ICA/RDP session within their
original session. Pass-through printing allows UniPrint to send print jobs
seamlessly through multiple ICA/RDP sessions to the first client workstation
in the chain. (Default is Cleared)
Logon Options
Set UniPrint as default printer
When this option is selected, all users who have access to the UniPrint printer
will have it set as their default printer in their sessions. (Default is Selected)

Configuring UniPrint Using Administrative Templates in
Windows
Most configuration can be done through the UniPrint Management Console,
however, UniPrint has provided administrative templates to standardize
configuration for a larger number of users.
An ADM, ADMX and ADML (Administrative Template) files are available in
the UniPrint Suite installation directory, for example C:\Program
Files\UniPrint Suite\ADM Templates. Using an administrative template
file, network administrators can configure default UniPrint settings in a
structured manner for all users.

UniPrint Version 7.0
UniPrint PrintPAL
UniPrint PrintPAL is a client device-to-printer mapping utility that easily
plugs into UniPrint Gateway Edition 7.0.3. It is installed on the same
appliance as UniPrint Spool Server and provides a simple user interface that
enables administrators to control or restrict which Gateway printers a user can
access. Administrators first create groups of client devices, OUs, user groups
and users and then map them to specific printers.
Configuration for PrintPAL is done through the PrintPAL plug-in, in the
UniPrint Management Console. To access PrintPAL, do the following:
a. Click Start, click All Programs, click UniPrint Suite and then
click UniPrint Management Console.
b. Under Tools & Utilities, click PrintPAL.
Planning your UniPrint PrintPAL Configuration
It is highly recommended that time be taken to plan out how PrintPAL
should be configured. Taking time to think about your network topology and
security concerns in advance will enable you to configure PrintPAL more
efficiently.
You can plan for the majority of your PrintPAL setup by examining your
network topology, the client devices on your network and how you want to
group them with Gateway printers. Grouping client devices and Gateway
printers may depend on your organizational structure, corporate security
policies and network environment. Some parameters to consider are the
following:
• Geographic location (country, province/state, city)
• Complex or campus name
• Building name
• Floor or level
• Department
• Job function or job title.
As the network administrator, you will also need to determine which client
has access to which Gateway printers. This can be based on proximity to the
printer, that is, a particular workstation can only access the printer closest to
it. Or it can be based on corporate security policies, for example, since HR
tends to print out sensitive information you can restrict access to printers in
the HR department to HR client devices only. This can be done using an IP
range since you can assign an IP range for a particular department using
PrintPAL.
Chapter 5: UniPrint Tools and Utilities
The following are two examples of how to group your client devices.

UniPrint Version 7.0
PrintPAL is comprised of four panes. The panes on the left hand side
represents the PrintPAL map and the pane on the right hand side represents
mappable objects which consists of network objects and Gateway printers.
Group Map
This pane represents your device group mapping in tree form. Use this pane
to create parent and child groups to which devices and printers are mapped.
Groups can be organized geographically, departmentally and are typically
dependant on your network topology. For more information on how to plan
out groups, see ”Planning your UniPrint PrintPAL Configuration” on
page 88.
Objects Mapped
To The Group
This pane displays the devices (for example, servers, PCs, thin clients and
PDAs), users, user groups and organizational units assigned to the selected
group. The screen shot above contains a list of objects assigned to the
Marketing group on the 1st Floor in Montreal.
Printers Mapped
To The Group
This pane displays the printers available to the devices listed in the Objects
Mapped To The Group pane. During a client session, a user can add any of
the Gateway printers listed in this pane using PrintPAL.
Objects Available
For Mapping
This pane represents the objects that are available for mapping from the
domain specified in PrintPAL Settings and is divided into two tabs. The
Network Objects tab lists all of the devices, users, user groups and OUs.
The Gateway Printers tab lists all of the mappable printers. Objects can be
dragged into the Objects Mapped To The Group pane and printers can be
dragged to the Printers Mapped To the Group pane, which assigns them
to a specific group.

Testing PrintPAL Mappings
A testing utility has been provided to test your object-to-printer mapping.
With complex mappings, the resulting printer list may not be obvious. You
can test mappings by the following parameters: device name, IP address, user
name or you can test a current session. The result of using this utility is a
consolidated list of which printers are mapped to a particular parameter.
For example, a user name is mapped to printers 1, 2, and 3 and there exists an
IP range that is mapped to printers X, Y and Z. If that user logs onto a device
that is within the IP range, not only will the user have access to printers 1, 2
and 3, but they should also have access to printers X, Y and Z as well. If a
network administrator were to test that particular user session, printers 1, 2, 3,
X, Y and Z would be visible in the printer list.

undesirable results. In such cases, users can utilize the UniPrint Adobe Plug-in
tool to inform the UniPrint driver not to re-process the file.
110
UniPrint Version 7.0
The UniPrint Adobe Plug-in is compatible with Adobe Acrobat or Adobe
Reader 5.0 or later.
Installing the UniPrint Plug-in for Acrobat
The UniPrint Adobe Plug-in is packaged with the UniPrint Server
installation program.
If Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader is installed on the server, the Install
Adobe plug-in option will appear during UniPrint Server installation.
When this option is selected the UniPrint Adobe Plug-in file,
UPPlugin.api, will be placed in the Adobe plug-ins directory. If Adobe
Acrobat or Adobe Reader is installed after UniPrint Server is already installed
on the server, the UniPrint Adobe Plug-in file will need to be copied from
the \\Program Files\UniPrint Suite folder to the Adobe plug-ins
directory manually.
Printing from Acrobat or Reader to UniPrint
There are two ways to print from Adobe Reader 9 or earlier to UniPrint, do
one of the following:
• Click the UniPrint
icon in the Adobe toolbar.
• In the File menu, click Print to UniPrint.
Chapter 5: UniPrint Tools and Utilities

UniPrint
By default, the PDF document will be re-rendered by the UniPrint driver if
users select Print instead of Print to UniPrint in the File menu. UniPrint
Adobe Plug-in version 2.1.6 or later provides a registry key that will change
this functionality.
To prevent re-rendering of PDF documents by editing the registry:
1. Click Start and then click Run.
2. Type regedit and then click OK to edit the registry.
3. In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\UniPrint

Upgrading the UniPrint Plug-in for Acrobat
To upgrade the UniPrint Acrobat Plug-in:
1. Ensure that the older version of UniPrint*.api in the \\Program
Files\Adobe\Acrobat\Reader\plug_ins folder is replaced with
the new UPPlugin.api found in the \\Program Files\UniPrint
Suite folder.
NOTE
Only one UniPrint Adobe Plug-in file should reside in the Adobe folder.
Having multiple UniPrint Adobe Plug-in files in this folder (even when the
version is different) will cause a conflict and prevent the plug-in from
functioning properly.
2. If the AdobePluginPrintReplace.reg file was imported in an older
version, delete the Server registry sub key found under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\UniPrint.

Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting
The following are work-arounds that involve issues with third-party
applications and how they interact with UniPrint. UniPrint is not responsible
for these third-party applications and only recommends these work-arounds.
All work-arounds should be tested prior to implementing them in
production.
Citrix Issues
Citrix Seamless Application Sessions not terminating when an application is closed
If you have trouble with Citrix Seamless Application Sessions not terminating
when a user closes an application, do the following:
1. On the Citrix server, click Start and then click Run.
2. Type regedit and then click OK to edit the registry.
3. In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet
\Control\Terminal Server\SysProcs, add a DWORD value. To
add a DWORD value, click Edit, point to New and then click
DWORD (32-bit) Value.
4. Rename this new value to WFShell.exe. This is a Citrix process.
5. Exit the Registry Editor.
Third-party Printer Driver Issues
Some third-party printer drivers may exhibit sporadic behavior
The UniPrint Print Server uses OEM provided printer drivers to
communicate with the physical printer. Some third-party printer drivers
exhibit sporadic behavior. As a result, UniPrint Print Server may fail to print a
document due to a specific compatibility issue with one of these printer
drivers. To resolve this issue, UniPrint recommends testing alternative printer
drivers. For example, if a PCL 6 printer driver is no functioning correctly, it is
114
UniPrint Version 7.0
advisable to test with the PostScript version of the same printer driver. If
available, a PCL 5 printer driver may also resolve this issue. You may also wish
to notify UniPrint Support of any OEM printer drivers that appear to behave
incorrectly.
