WGBH brings depth and perspective to the country’s
ongoing conversation about race this month as we
present Black America Since MLK: And Still I Rise, a new film produced
and written by our neighbor and prominent Harvard scholar Henry Louis
Gates, Jr.
The two-part, four-hour documentary offers a fresh examination of key
events and turning points in race relations and black history over the past
five decades.
“Following the remarkable strides made during the civil rights movement
of Dr. King, African Americans have achieved a level of cultural, political and
economic influence that those early civil rights leaders could hardly have
dreamed of,” Gates says. “At the same time,
poverty remains a stubbornly persistent
way of life for far too many African
Americans, incarceration rates in our community are at an all-time high and people
are crying out to have their basic human
dignity recognized.”
Gates takes us through America’s
tumultuous past to its complicated present,
when many schools and neighborhoods
remain segregated, and police killings of
unarmed black men are in the headlines far
too often—inspiring radically different
responses within black and white communities. How did we end up here,
when half a century ago racial equality seemed imminent—even inevitable?
Gates hears from a diverse range of voices, including Oprah Winfrey,
former US Attorney General Eric Holder, leading education reformers and
police officers in communities that have been shaken by racial unrest. “We are
at a critical moment in the black experience in America,” Gates says. “This
series looks at the rich history of how we arrived where we are today, through
all the highs and lows, and poses provocative questions about how we keep
up a momentum of progress.”
Digging deeper, addressing questions others are hesitant to ask, WGBH
sheds new light on a complex issue shaping our American story. Thank you for
helping make this important work possible.

Cold War Clash
On Nov. 27, 1950, US troops were pushing
north through the Korean Peninsula,
spearheading a United Nations force
sanctioned to drive North Korea’s invading
Communist Army out of democraticallyheld South Korea. Over the next two
weeks, in temperatures that often plunged
to 20 degrees below zero, US forces engaged in intense and bloody
combat. WGBH’s American Experience recounts the conflict through eyewitness accounts, presenting a harrowing narrative of the first major
military battle of the Cold War.

abilities, to their unique physiology and behaviors. In this two-part
series, Nature traverses the globe to track down the origins of these
diverse creatures. Travel along to the rainforests, to the savannah,
to mountain tops and all the way into
our homes to get an in-depth look at
the evolutionary tricks and adaptations
that truly make a cat, a cat.

Hidden Treasures
Deep inside the Earth, you’ll discover the
hidden riches that have helped shape
humankind. There are the metals
that have built our modern cities and the
fuels we need to power them. There are
the sparkling gems with their alluring
beauty and the many minerals essential
to the tools we use every day. Nova’s
three-part series explores how these unique resources have lifted us
from the Stone Age to the stars, and how they can now be used to
help solve the problems we face today.

The Universal Language
The last project of legendary Beatles producer Sir George Martin,
this eight-part series is a music-driven celebration of the art of recording, combining unprecedented access to some of the most celebrated
artists, producers and innovators
from across the music spectrum,
with rare archival studio footage
and an extensive soundtrack. The
series features more than 150
original interviews with luminaries
ranging from Paul McCartney to
Beck, from Joni Mitchell to Q-tip.
“Music is the only common thread
and universal language that binds us together regardless of race,
nationality, age or income,” Martin said prior to his passing. “And
recorded music is how we experience it and what makes it accessible.”

Obstacles to Overcome
Veteran filmmaker, historian and
Harvard University professor
Henry Louis Gates, Jr. looks at the
last 50 years of African American
history—from Dr. King to Barack
Obama, from James Brown’s “I’m
Black and I’m Proud” to Beyoncé’s
“Formation”—charting the
remarkable progress black people
have made, and raising hard questions about the obstacles that
remain. With the distinctive personal tone of an essay, this two-part
series steps out of the sanctified past to examine the complex, raw
and conflicted present.

Life at the Edge
More than a century ago, the US government relocated the nomadic Inupiaq
people to Kivalina, Alaska—an island that teeters on the edge of the North
Pacific. Today, the community struggles to maintain itself in the face of forces
largely beyond its control. Climate
change threatens to drown the village under rising ocean levels. The
neglect of a government thousands
of miles away delays repairs to the
crumbling sea wall that routinely fails
to protect the island from ever-morefrequent storm flooding. And, as the
melting ice opens up the north to
resource extraction and tanker traffic, an oil spill would wipe out the whales
and with it the community. The Inupiaq people carry on under the weight of
these impending disasters. Intimate and unflinching, this film shows the cultural as well as the environmental consequences of climate change. America ReFramed/Kivalina

Going Beyond
During the Vietnam era, the
political and emotional divides
between active duty soldiers
and the burgeoning peace
community at home left deep
scars unresolved, and fractured
families and communities. In
Missoula, Montana, a mysterious graffiti peace symbol inflamed the enduring animosity, dividing a community for decades. Through the courageous acts of a Vietnam veteran and a
peace advocate, this film illuminates a path to healing old wounds and demonstrates authentic peace building. The story serves to inspire viewers to take
the courageous first steps to reach beyond polarization in search of what
unites us instead of what divides us.
Beyond the Divide
Wed, 11/9 at 9pm
World is produced and distributed by WGBH Boston, American
Public Television and WNET/New York in association with PBS and
the National Educational Telecommunications Association.

Out of Uniform
Follow three recent veterans—
Sam Shockley, Helen Chandler and
Bernard Edwards—as they journey
cross-country to seek out fellow
service members who have successfully transitioned into the workforce,
and to obtain the insights they need
to thrive in the next chapter of their
own lives. The stories presented prove
there’s no one way to handle transition—each veteran has a different background and set of challenges. But they all share a common hurdle: after
spending their lives defined by their military identity, they wonder who
they’ll be when the uniform is gone.

Native Power
A provocative film told from the American Indian perspective, Red Power
Energy reframes today’s complex energy debate. Can energy development on
tribal lands empower a people while powering the nation? And what impact
will it have on their culture,
economy and the environment?
Native people are in the midst of
an extraordinary resurgence,
challenging long-held stereotypes and fighting for the sovereign right to control their lands
and develop their natural and
mineral resources—however
they choose. The film’s Native-told energy stories offer a rare insight into the
ideological battle shaping modern Indian country, and further advance a
deeper understanding of American Indian culture.

Expedition into the Past
This documentary accompanies the
Inuit hunter Hivshu, a.k.a. Robert E.
Peary II, as he traces the story of his
great grandfather. Robert E. Peary
spent 23 years living in the Arctic in
his quest to be the first man to reach
the North Pole. In 1897, pressured by
his sponsors to supply them with treasures from the far north, he brought
six living Eskimos to The American Museum of Natural History in New York,
among them a six-year-old-boy. Hivshu goes to Greenland to confront the
past and find out what happened to that boy, named Minik.

Tina Martin’s Award Is on the Money
Eric in the Evening
WGBH News reporter Tina Martin recently won the
2016 Excellence in Personal Finance Reporting Award in
the Radio category, from the National Endowment for
Financial Education (NEFE) in partnership with the Radio
Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). Her winning
story, “Debt Collectors Have Rules, Too,” explores the
little-known regulations on debt collectors—and the
rights of debt-laden consumers.
“Debt is an important topic which affects so many people in our community and beyond,” says Phil Redo, General Manager for Radio. “Tina has
taken a closer look at those who hold consumers accountable—namely,
debt collectors—thereby holding them accountable, too.”
Classroom to the Newsroom—and Back
WGBH News has forged two new partnerships that strengthen the relationship between our newsroom and the local community. A partnership with
Northeastern University’s School of Journalism provides students the opportunity to work with the WGBH News team and to learn how to craft strong
local stories. The students will have the opportunity to pitch their stories for
publication across WGBH News’ radio, TV and digital platforms. At the same
time, WGBH News will gain valuable perspectives from these emerging
journalists. The news team also will be hosting monthly editorial meetings
at local YMCA branches to meet residents and learn more about stories that
are relevant to their communities.
“We look forward to helping develop the next generation of local
journalists, while engaging with our audience in new and meaningful ways,”
says News Director Kate Zachry.

A Tribute to Bobby
Noted vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson “expanded
the scope of what was possible on his instrument.
And the sound he created was widely influential,”
according to NPR’s obituary. The New York Times said
his style was “luminescent and coolly fluid.” Host
Eric Jackson pays tribute to Hutcherson, who passed
away in August.

The Scrum Moves to Weekly Format
As we head down the home stretch to the 2016 presidential election and
beyond, The Scrum podcast, featuring WGBH News political reporter Adam
Reilly, WGBHNews.org Senior Editor Peter Kadzis, and political analyst
David S. Bernstein, is expanding from biweekly to weekly. The show focuses
on politics and media from the greater Boston area,
applying a local lens to issues of national importance.
“Today’s politics are tomorrow’s history,” Kadzis says.
“With so much change and conflict in the air, we’re stepping up the pace of The Scrum. Our hope is to bring our
audience even closer to the heartbeat of public affairs.”

99.5 WCRB
A Musical Feast
By Anthony Rudel
99.5 WCRB Station Manager
Ah…the weekend. What a wonderful concept that two-day respite is. But
there are times when those days off can be overfilled with things to do:
chores, extra work, kids’ sporting events and more. That’s why WCRB strives
to create a listening experience that goes wherever
your weekend may take you.
We hope you have more time to listen on weekends, so our hosts, including Ray Brown, Larry King,
and Tyler Alderson, bring you a wonderful mix—we
call it the weekend blend—of long and short pieces of
all styles, from all eras. You might be comforted by the
familiarity of a Mozart piano concerto, energized by a
fun-filled Gershwin overture, dazzled by a dance by
Uccelini, and surprised by the novelty of a Vanhal concerto for two bassoons! It’s all there every weekend,
and we hope that, as winter nears, you’ll find yourself drawn more and more
to the beautiful music available on WCRB 24/7.
With our focus on the weekend, let me ask—Is there a better way to
wrap up a wonderful Saturday or Sunday than with a concert from one of
Boston’s great performance spaces? Check out the schedules (right) for our
two popular weekend programs, the Saturday night (8pm) Boston Symphony
Orchestra broadcasts live from Symphony Hall, and our highly acclaimed new
series WCRB In Concert. The entire WCRB team is involved with this new initiative, and we are delighted to be partnering with more than 20 of Boston’s
finest music organizations to bring this series to you. For a complete list of
our partners, please visit classicalwcrb.org.
Now, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention WCRB’s plans for Thanksgiving. This
year, we’re marking the holiday itself with a musical feast featuring pieces
that have been carefully selected to carry you through your morning of
preparations, and then to serve as the perfect accompaniment to your meal
and time with family and friends. Then, beginning on Friday morning at
9am, you’ll enjoy listening to our Thanksgiving Block Party Weekend: three
days filled with long blocks of great music, perfectly mixed to match the
mood of the holiday weekend.

WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station
Rounding Up the News
By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial
Every Friday on The Point, WCAI News Director Sean Corcoran (left) leads
a conversation with local journalists about the top stories affecting communities on the Cape, Coast and Islands.
“Even with the erosion of local media, there are still lots of committed
journalists out there, covering meetings, interviewing people and gathering
information,” Corcoran says. “I know our listeners are interested in their work
and staying informed.”
Anne Brennan, editor of CapeCodOnline.com for the Cape Cod Times, has
been taking part in the WCAI’s weekly News Roundup since it began in 2003.
“There is always more information about a story than can be included in a
newspaper or online report,” she says. “The Roundup is a wonderful opportunity to extend the depth, history and context of the news happening in this
region.”
Brennan says the newspaper’s partnership with WCAI was a no-brainer,
as the guest appearances on The Point have made it possible for listeners to
get to know the Times’ reporters and editors. “This has deepened our relationship with our readers and WCAI listeners,” she says.
Over the years, in an effort to feature more stories and voices during the
show, we’ve welcomed journalists from a variety of local publications, including newspapers from Provincetown to New Bedford, and both Martha’s
