2017 Annual Convention
June 21–24, 2017
San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter
San Antonio, TX
From June 21–24, 2017, the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter will be the home of NELA’s 2017 Annual
Convention, Be The Change. Join us in San Antonio, Texas, as we come together and recommit
ourselves to advancing employee rights and advocating for equality and justice in the
American workplace. The Annual Convention is an exceptional opportunity to charge
your batteries, sharpen your skills, and expand your network of
colleagues—all of which are more important than ever.
Be Inspired
NELA is proud to honor four beacons of justice and courage at the 2017 Annual Convention.
The opening plenary session, “‘Be The Change: Honoring Courageous Plaintiffs,” will bring to life the stories of three remarkable individuals
who stood up to their employers and held their ground in the face of immense adversity, not only to vindicate their own rights, but to improve
the lives of others as well. While employed by oil giant Schlumberger, Juan Alonzo-Miranda, a combat veteran who served three tours of
duty in Iraq, sought an ADA accommodation to bring a trained service animal to work in order to mitigate the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD). Mr. Alonzo-Miranda’s case was the first jury trial in the country to address this issue, and his victory set a powerful precedent
for the accommodation of veterans with PTSD and educating others about the value of service animals. Yosif Bakhit, a Sudanese immigrant
who was granted political asylum in the United States and later became a U.S. citizen, was subjected to severe and pervasive racial discrimination at Safety Marking by his co-workers and supervisors, while his complaints about such illegal conduct were ignored. A Connecticut
jury awarded Mr. Bakhit and his co-plaintiff a record-setting $3.4 million total verdict, exclusive of attorney’s fees and costs. Mr. Bakhit’s case
not only improved the policies and practices at Safety Marketing, but positively affected the entire construction industry. Gretchen Carlson,
former news anchor at Fox News, brought a sexual harassment lawsuit against past Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes, only to have
Fox News attempt to hide behind a forced arbitration provision. As a result of her experience, Ms. Carlson has become a prominent national
voice in the fight against forced arbitration, stating “It is a huge problem. Because it’s secret.” NELA proudly celebrates each of our honorees
and their advocates for their perseverance and strength, which inspire all of us to continue the fight for equality and justice in the American
workplace.
After 27 years of incomparable service, NELA Executive Director Terisa E. Chaw will retire in July 2017. From her first days as the lone,
part-time employee of NELA to now managing nine staff members, offices on two coasts, robust advocacy programs and member services,
an Annual Convention with over 500 participants, and our sister organization, The Employee Rights Advocacy Institute For Law & Policy (The
Institute), Teri has been our leader and inspiration. She has poured her heart and soul into NELA and The Institute, ensuring that each will
continue to bring positive change to the American workplace for years to come. We are delighted to recognize Teri’s commitment and achievements during our Annual Gala Fundraiser,
Simply The Best, on Friday, June 23. Join us for an evening of joy and gratitude while dancing
the night away in celebration of Teri and all that she has done for the NELA and Institute family.

Be Informed
NELA’s 2017 Annual Convention Committee Looks
Inspired and refreshed, you will also be called into action as an
agent of change. In addition to honoring our Courageous Plaintiffs,
the Convention will feature plenary sessions on “Let’s Get To Work!
Defending & Advancing Employee Rights,” “Because ‘Cause’ Matters:
Causation Under Federal & State Employment Discrimination Laws,”
and the indispensable “Year In Review: Significant Developments In
Employment Law.” Dedicated program tracks on Discovery, Trial
Advocacy, Representing Vulnerable & Underserved Workers, and
for New Lawyers (and lawyers new to the practice of plaintiffs’
employment law) will help you identify sessions that are directly relevant
to your practice.
Beyond the program tracks, other cutting-edge substantive law and
practical skills presentations will cover a diverse range of topics,
including defeating summary judgment, creative settlement terms,
maximizing damages, national origin discrimination, defining employment
relationships in the 21st century, and many others.
Be The Change
Together with NELA, your advocacy—each client, each case, and each
fight for equality—is amplified by the over 4,000 NELA and Affiliate
members who share your passion for justice. We hope to see you in San
Antonio to “Be The Change” that will build a stronger future for workers
across the country.

2017 Annual Convention Keynote Speaker
The Honorable Kevin H. Sharp
Annual Luncheon
Thursday, June 22, 2017
12:15–1:45 p.m.
“Having worked in all three branches of government ... I have witnessed the dedication
and sacrifice of the men and women who have chosen to put country above self.
They have inspired me, and, I hope, made me a better citizen.”
—The Honorable Kevin H. Sharp, Chief Judge
U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee
NELA is privileged to welcome the Honorable Kevin H. Sharp to this year’s Annual
Convention. A former NELA member, Judge Sharp was nominated on November 17, 2010 by
President Barack Obama for the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee. He was
confirmed by Congress on May 2, 2011 by a vote of 89–0. Judge Sharp will leave the bench
this April to return to his roots as a plaintiffs’ employment lawyer to head the Nashville office of
Sanford Heisler LLP, one of the nation’s preeminent civil rights and public interest law firms.
Prior to joining the bench, Judge Sharp was a partner in a law firm he founded in Nashville, Drescher & Sharp PC. Before that,
he spent a majority of his legal career at Stokes Bartholomew Evans & Petree PA. Judge Sharp was also an attorney in the U.S.
Congress’ Office of Compliance from 1996 to 1997, and served in the Navy from 1982 to 1986. He received his law degree in 1993
from Vanderbilt Law School, and an undergraduate degree in 1990 from Christian Brothers College.
In his resignation letter to President Donald J. Trump, Judge Sharp wrote:
“In 2011, President Obama placed his trust in me. It has been my great honor to serve this nation and the citizens of Tennessee
as a federal judge. As I return to private practice, I will continue to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of
America.”
Judge Sharp “is known as a fair and thorough and conscientious jurist, extremely smart, extremely diligent, he cares about people
who come before him,” as described by David Sanford, Chairman and co-founder of Sanford Heisler, LLP.
Judge Sharp will be introduced by NELA Executive Board Member and Secretary Wade B. Cowan.

Simply The Best
NELA’s 2017 Annual Gala Fundraiser
Honoring Teri Chaw
Friday, June 23, 2017
7:30–11:00 p.m.
San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter
Teri Chaw is our “BEDA”—the best executive director in America!
—Paul H. Tobias, NELA Founder
For 27 years, Executive Director Teri Chaw has been the heart and soul of NELA. As our greatest champion, she has had a positive impact on thousands of
employee rights advocates, the field of plaintiffs’ employment law, and the American workplace. Teri has dedicated herself to building NELA into a strong and
vital organization. She has expanded our influence in Washington, DC and across the country, and has cultivated a vibrant and forward-looking community of
colleagues, friends, and allies. And, she is always reminding us to never give up. When Teri retires in July 2017, she leaves behind a legacy of excellence and
integrity, upholding herself and those around her to the highest ideals for which NELA and our sister organization, The Employee Rights Advocacy Institute For
Law & Policy (The Institute), stand.
Simply The
Best. After dinner on your own, we will gather for dessert on the evening of Friday, June 23 to say thank you and good-bye to NELA’s leader and inspiration.
Simply The Best will include a brief program recognizing Teri’s achievements followed by a night of live music and dancing featuring the Bad Funky
Please join the NELA and Institute family for an unforgettable farewell celebration honoring Teri at NELA’s 2017 Annual Gala Fundraiser,
Bones, San Antonio’s renowned Motown, Soul, and Funk Band.
We welcome your support of NELA’s 2017 Annual Gala Fundraiser, which harnesses the power of NELA in the fight for equality and justice in the American
workplace. As a sponsor of
Simply The Best, you will amplify NELA’s voice in our nation’s capital and courtrooms across the country. Proceeds from the
Gala fuel NELA’s Amicus, Judicial Nominations, and Legislative & Public Policy Programs, including the initiatives of our Washington DC Office. At a time when
civil and workers’ rights are gravely imperiled, it is more important than ever that we stand together to defend and protect the rights of America’s workers. NELA
aggressively opposes threats to a fair and just workplace, as well as the appointment of federal judges whose professional record demonstrates antipathy to
equal justice under law and employee rights.
Among other benefits, sponsors of
Simply The Best
will be recognized in the Commemorative Gala Fundraiser Program, NELA’s 2017 Annual
Convention Program Guide, and on the Gala Fundraiser Sponsor Board at the Convention. Pre-event sponsors will be listed in the invitation if your
sponsorship pledge is received by Monday, April 24, 2017. Sponsorships are tax-deductible as a business expense (advertising). For full sponsorship

The Employee Rights Advocacy Scholarship Program
The Employee Rights Advocacy Scholarship Program is a project of The Employee Rights Advocacy Institute For Law & Policy (The
Institute), NELA’s public interest organization. NELA and The Institute are committed to ensuring that NELA’s nationally renowned continuing
legal education programs are accessible to those who would otherwise not be able to attend without financial assistance. In this regard, we
encourage applications for full or partial scholarships from legal services, public interest, and private lawyers who represent workers. Based
on financial need, scholarship awards will cover the cost of the Convention registration fee, hotel expenses (room and tax for a maximum
three-night stay), and/or transportation.
To apply for a scholarship, send a letter on your employer’s letterhead describing: (1) your interest in attending the Convention,
(2) the nature of your legal practice or the legal services you provide, (3) the workers you represent, (4) the need for financial assistance,
(5) how the Convention relates to your practice and/or the clients you serve, and (6) any other information you wish us to consider. The
letter, scholarship application (see page 15 of this brochure), and registration form (see pages 16–17 of this brochure) must be
received no later than Monday, May 2, 2017. Send all scholarship documents to The Employee Rights Advocacy Institute For Law & Policy,
2201 Broadway, Suite 402, Oakland, CA 94612, Attention: Scholarship Committee. Scholarship documents also may be sent via facsimile
((866) 593-7521), or email ([email protected]).
Please note the following:
u
Preference will be given to applicants who provide direct legal services to workers.
u
Scholarships are not transferable.
u
All applicants will receive notification that their application has been received, and whether it has been granted or denied. Those receiving
scholarships will be sent written confirmation at least three (3) weeks in advance of the Convention. Applicants who do not receive notification
two (2) weeks before the Convention should contact NELA to inquire about the status of their application. Scholarships will not be awarded
retroactively, and applications will not be considered after the deadline of May 2, 2017. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Scholarship recipients will receive payment after submitting receipts for eligible expenses and an evaluation form. Scholarship recipients who
do not attend the Convention will forfeit their scholarship award.
We welcome your financial support of The Institute’s Employee Rights Advocacy Scholarship Program. Your contribution toward
making NELA’s renowned continuing legal education programs more accessible to employee advocates is deductible as a charitable
donation to the extent provided by law. Please see page 17 of this brochure to make your gift, or contact Leah A. Hofkin, NELA and
The Institute’s Director of Development (Tel: (415) 296-7629; Email: [email protected]).
NELA and The Employee Rights Advocacy Institute For Law & Policy gratefully
acknowledge Bloomberg BNA, the Kazan McClain Partners’ Foundation, NELA
members, and other individuals for their generous support of
The Employee Rights Advocacy Scholarship Program.
