In this guide you will be shown how to migrate your cPanel site from another provide to
our cPanel servers.
cPanel is the most commonly used web hosting control panel, used by many providers
throughout the world. Because cPanel is a proprietary software, you can automate the
transfer of cPanel accounts between hosts.
If you have a cPanel account with another provider, we can migrate your hosting to us for
free. All you need to do is send us your cPanel login details in a support ticket to
[email protected]. However, if you would like to make the process quicker (and
simpler for us), you can take care of the first few steps.
Advanced Users: If you have server root access (i.e. if your username is root) with your old
provider, it is definitely a transfer you should leave to us, rather than doing it yourself.
Step 1 - Log Into cPanel With Your Existing Host
First, you should log into the old cPanel with the hosting provider you are moving away
from. Your control panel should look similar to the image below. Once in, find and click the
‘Backups’ icon.
Step 2 - Generate A Backup
We now need to tell cPanel to generate a backup. After you click backups you should now
see a screen with the following content. Click ‘Download or Generate a Full Website Backup’.
Full Backup
A full backup includes all of the files in your home directory, your MySQL databases, and
your email forwarders and filters. You can back up your account to preserve your data, or to
move your account to another cPanel server.
Download or Generate a Full Website Backup
On the next screen you should set the following options:
Backup Destination: Remote FTP server
Email Address: Your Email Address (you’ll receive a notification to let you know when this
completes)
When you choose ‘Remote FTP Server’ a few more options will appear. If you have ordered
cPanel hosting with us, your welcome email will contain the following information:
Remote Server: Your FTP hostname (usually ‘servername.server.eqx.misp.co.uk’ or similar)
Remote User: Your FTP username
Remote Password: Your FTP password
You should also fill the remaining fields in as follows:
Port: 21
Remote Dir: /
Then click ‘Generate Backup’
Step 3 - Wait For The Backup
This backup can take some time to complete. Depending on the existing provider and the
size of your account, it can take 5 minutes, up to several hours.
If you enter your email in to the ‘Email Address’ field, once the copy is complete you will
receive an email confirmation.
Step 4 - Let Us Know That The Backup Is Ready To Restore
All you need to do now is send us an email to [email protected] and let us know that
you require a backup restoring. Just let us know the following:
Your Domain Name:
Your Old Host:
Your old cPanel Username:
Don’t worry if you don’t know any of this - we’ll be able to work out what else we need!
Finally, it seems obvious but please note that when we restore the backup it will overwrite
everything else in the new account you have created with us with your old content!
Advanced Users: If you have more than one cPanel account to move to us (for example an
entire reseller account), you can put these all in one location. No need to separate them into
separate areas - we’ll sort that for you.
