Camp Descriptions
Clay and Canvas:
All camps include
high quality art materials!
Morning camps: 9:00 - 12:30 pm
Afternoon camps: 1:30 - 5:00 pm
Session 1: Knights, Princesses and Dragons, (6-10 year olds) - June 27 - 30th MORNING
Session 5: Individual Options, (10-15 year olds) - July 11 - 14th MORNING
Session 11: Bugs, Plants, Vines and Flowers, (6-10 year olds) - August 1 - 4th MORNING
Imagine a bug with cool antennae and wild legs or a fire breathing dragon popping right off your canvas! We’ll be using
Sculpey clay to make 3D relief clay characters and painting with acrylics on canvas. The painted canvas will become the
background environment for the clay characters. This is a really fun combination of painting and clay and the results are
amazing. There are two sessions for younger campers, choose from Knights, Princesses and Dragons or Bugs, Plants,
Vines and Flowers. Older campers will design their own unique characters and backgrounds.
Cartooning - Traditional:
Session 2: (7-14 year olds) - June 27 - 30th AFTERNOON
It’s all about drawing! Each day we’ll learn to draw several different cartoon characters. We’ll include some classic
favorites like Mickey, Minnie or Piglet as well as fantasy aliens, rockets, and robots. In previous camps our drawings have
included Garfield, Cars, Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., Calvin and Hobbes, Snoopy, Shrek, Tom and Jerry, Hello Kitty, Goofy,
Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird and Nemo. We’ll learn about animation and make thaumatropes (spinning discs). Help us plan
– when you register tell us which characters you really want to draw!
Star Wars/Clone Wars:
Session 3: (7-14 year olds) - July 5 - 8th** , Tuesday - Friday MORNING
Session 15: (7-14 year olds) - August 15 - 18th MORNING
If you’re a Star Wars/Clone Wars fan and you love to draw this is your week! We’ll be drawing your favorite characters,
cool backgrounds, and a variety of battle vehicles and weapons. We’ll be using lots of different mediums to create our
masterpieces: pencils, Copic markers, Prismacolor colored pencils, watercolors and maybe some chalk and oil pastels.
When you register be sure to let us know what is on your wish list to draw during this week.
It’s All About Me:
Session 4: (6-9 year olds) - July 5 - 8th** , Tuesday - Friday AFTERNOON
Session 10: (10-15 year olds) - July 25 - 28th AFTERNOON
Everyone is different, interesting and special - this week is all about having fun and celebrating who you are. We’ll
create our own unique self portraits using a variety of materials. Our work promises to be unusual and creative - how do
you think you would look with the ocean flowing from the top of your head or your curly locks becoming jungle vines?
Younger campers will be creating animal personality portraits by combing traits from three animals that best describe their
personality. Older campers will be working with on a painting/collage combining mixed media to create layers of acrylic,
paper and fiber. Depending on the direction of the projects older campers may also be using clay, Shrinky Dinks or
mosaics as part of their work.
Our teachers look forward to Summer Art Camps as
much as the kids who come to our camps. We work
hard, play hard and have a lot of fun!

Classic Camp:
Session 6: (ages 6-10) - July 11 - 14th AFTERNOON
Session 13: (ages 6-10) - August 8 - 11th MORNING
Back by Popular Demand - Last year this camp booked incredibly fast and we had such a good time with it we’re
decided to offer it again. This week will be filled with traditional camp projects featuring Sit Upons, Birdhouses,
Gods-Eye Yarn Designs, Friendship Bracelets, Pony Bead Creatures, Gimp, Leather and S’Mores. We’ll learn campfire
songs and weather permitting we’ll create some art outdoors. We’ll be drawing and painting animals and landscapes
complete with tents and bears!
Cartooning - Nintendo:
Session 7 : (ages 7-14) - July 18 - 21st MORNING
Session 14: (ages 7-14) - August 8 - 11th AFTERNOON
Put down your game controllers and pick up your pencils! This week instead of playing video games we’ll be drawing
characters. We’re going to concentrate on some of your favorite Nintendo characters: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad,
Yoshi, Kirby, Wario, Goomba, and Donkey Kong are all possibilities. We’ll also work on designing cool background
environments for the characters. Get your creative juices flowing and draw with us. When you register give us your wish
list of characters you’d like to draw.
Play with Your Food:
Session 8: (ages 6-10) - July 18 - 21st AFTERNOON
Food takes center stage this week - we’ll be transforming food in our drawings and paintings and creating unexpected
creatures and foodscapes (food landscapes). Giant fruits and veggies can become hot air balloons, animals or even flying
fish. We will work with real food to create edible art as well. The possibilities are endless: we can draw and paint foods
OR draw and paint on food (think chocolate or cupcakes). Bring your artistic appetite and get ready to have a great time!
If you have food allergies be sure to let us know ahead of time.
Family Pets:
Session 9: (ages 6-9) - July 25 - 28th MORNING
Session 12: (ages 6-9) - August 1 - 4th AFTERNOON
When you register for this camp be sure to let us know if you have a family pet - it could be a dog, cat, bird, fish or even
a rat or iguana. We plan to spend the week creating art that celebrates pets of all types. We’ll be drawing, painting and
creating 3D projects. Before we can finalize all the details for this week we need to know more about your pets. We can
tell you that the week will revolve around creating pet friendly projects and artwork and that it’s the perfect camp for all pet
lovers. If you don’t have a family pet, but you love animals, you’re welcome to join us too!

high school students to create work for their portfolio.
It’s also a great class for adults who want to sharpen
their drawing skills with a familiar subject. During the

form and gesture while drawing animals. We’ll cover

Camp Information:
Camp weeks have different themes but in each camp we
will stress the process of art rather than trying to achieve a
perfect result. By working in a supportive environment we’ll
encourage each other to try new things. We’ll take time to
really look at what we’re creating and spend some time
playing with different art materials.
Camp descriptions may change somewhat depending on
the interests of each group of campers and the length of
time projects take to complete.
Camp Philosophy:
The camps will be run by Sharon Cavanaugh, Doris
Mrugala, Cathy Levesque, teachers at Connecticut ART
School, South Windsor. Our goal is to teach children how
to use art as a positive creative outlet for fun, selfexpression and to build self-esteem.
We have been offering summer art camps since 2002 we take great pride in our camps and continually work to
create fun, challenging, and inspiring projects.
Weekly drawing and painting classes will begin again in
September 2011 - the schedule and class information will
be posted on our website: www.CT-ArtSchool.com.
All camps, evening drawing classes, Friday workshops
and mini camps are held at 1730 Ellington Road, South
Windsor at Connecticut ART School. We will work
outdoors, weather permitting, for some projects. We have
portable easels and mats that we can bring outside and a
nice grassy area to work.
We will also be working in the school classrooms which are
air conditioned. It’s great to have the option to work both
indoors and out so we can easily adjust to the weather and
the type of project we’re working on.
