Happy trails for local Interlake schools
By Jennifer McFee
Two local schools came together for
an end-of-year activity focused on
lessons from the trail.
On Wednesday, June 22, Brant-Argyle School introduced vistiors from
Balmoral School to the Prime Meridian Trail. They spent a day together in
the bush and made connections with
plant scientists and naturalists.
Students identified and investigated
species along the trail as they learned
about native plants, medicinal plants
and other useful greenery.
Special guests included Laura
Reeves of Prairie Shore Botanicals,
Chris Friesen of Manitoba Conservation and John Morgan of Prairie Habitats.
After a picnic lunch, students enjoyed playing among the trees and
wildflowers. The group also participated in plant-themed activities, such
as making plantain poultices and
pineapple weed tea.
Students from Balmoral School
and Brant-Argyle School spent
the day in the great outdoors.

Remembering loved ones in local memory garden
By Jo-Anne Procter
On a stroll through Stonewall,
you can now stop to smell the roses and remember dear ones that
have passed on at the Memory
Garden west of the RCMP detachment.
The Town of Stonewall, in co-operation with the Stonewall Communities in Bloom Committee
and the South Interlake Garden
Club, has developed a memory
garden for loved ones that once
resided in the community and
have since passed away.
Members of the South Interlake
Garden Club spent the evening
of June 20 prepping the Memory Garden. They raked, weeded,
pruned and planted 72 native
plants to attract bees and butterflies.
An engraved tile explaining
the garden has been placed on a
monument with an inscription
by Linda Dzendzeluk-Girard that
reads: “When someone we love
passes away, we are still connected to them through our memories. We can visit our memories
anytime and anywhere, free from
the world’s physical borders. Certain places whisper to us to stop
and remember the one we love
and lost. It is our hope that this
garden will provide a place for
you to fall into a memory and feel
the embrace of the one you love.”
The town has created 8” x 8”
stones that will be engraved and
placed in the garden by town employees. Stones to commemorate
a loved one can be purchased for
$100 plus taxes through the Town
of Stonewall website at www.
stonewall.ca or by calling the office at 204-467-7979.
The Town will place the Memory
Stones in the Community Memory Garden between the months of
May and September.
