The Hemel Hempstead School Issue 992 16 September 2016 Email: [email protected] Website: www.hhs.herts.sch.uk HeadLines Sandra Samwell, Headteacher of HHS from September 2005 to January 2012, died last week as a result of leukaemia, aged 64. Sandra was passionate about the performing arts and the article in her local paper, Peterborough Today, shows that she was involved in productions to the end. Sandra was at Deacon’s School in Peterborough (now Thomas Deacon Academy) for more than 25 years before moving to The Hemel Hempstead School then retiring. She studied theology at the University of Hull before training to become a teacher at Homerton College at the University of Cambridge. Her passing on Monday was sudden according to her younger sister Fiona Fairchild who said: “She was diagnosed four weeks ago with leukaemia and had undergone treatment. It was bad but we did not expect it to happen straight away. She was incredibly clever and loved everybody and helping people”. A member of HHS staff supported this view, stating that “Sandra always found time to find out more about each individual person – she was very caring”. The funeral takes place in Peterborough next Friday afternoon. On a happier note we were delighted to welcome Mike Swift from Hemel Stags Rugby League Club to the Year 10 and 11 assembly on Wednesday. He commended the school for the way in which it had embraced the sport and praised the achievement of many of the year groups, singling out in particular Sam Jolly and Ed Shaw of Year 11 for their very high standard. He then made a surprise presentation of a trophy to Mr Heward, Head of PE, who had been named Teacher of the Year for London and the South East. Congratulations to Mr Heward and all of the students participating in rugby league in recent years. Students may be dropped off and collected from Beechfield Road or the Sportspace car park in Heath Lane (please be aware of the maximum 20 minutes wait time). When parking in nearby roads please do not park on the pavement (obstructing wheelchair or double buggy access) or across residents’ driveways. If everybody follows these guidelines then we should be able to ensure that the flow of traffic around the school is reasonable at all times, that all users can access the site effectively and, most importantly, that we are able to keep all our students safe. Many thanks. It hopes to inspire many students who hadn’t previously considered Medicine as an option. The conference will give students, parents and teachers an opportunity to network with a range of doctors and medical students from across the UK. Delegates will have access to 14 different careers talks, including various Royal Colleges, medical organisations and medical schools. This invaluable and informative day will encourage students to explore work experience opportunities, learn about useful educational resources and develop a greater insight into what doctors do and the incredible variety that exists in the medical profession. The event takes place at locations across the country on Saturday 19th November including the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield between 10 am and 5 pm and is suitable for students in Years 10 – 12. The cost is £25 per person. Student Services Mrs Bailey, Head of Performing Arts Open Day Arrangements As has now become customary, we will be holding an Open Day (as opposed to Open Evening) for Year 6 students and parents in order to make the most of the attributes of our school site. This will take place on the morning of Saturday 1st October. The site will be open to visitors from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm, but staff and student helpers will be on site from 9 am until 1 pm. Tours for parents will be conducted by students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 12; students will register at 9 am in their form rooms. Students from other year groups are most welcome to volunteer to help with tours, but we also need assistance in subject areas across the school and we would be delighted to have as many students as possible helping in this way. Students in Years 8 - 13 will finish at 1.30 pm on Friday 30th September to allow staff to prepare the site and to allow Year 7 to prepare for their guiding duties. In lieu of the school being open on Saturday 1st October the school will be closed to all students on Thursday 24th November, except for Year 11 who will be sitting Trial GCSE Examinations on that day. School is also closed on Friday 25th November (Occasional Day).
