T
he Irish Baroque Orchestra
is Ireland’s premiere period
ensemble, bringing to life the
beauty of baroque music as it
was intended to be heard. The orchestra
has garnered a reputation for excellence
in authentic, historically informed period
performances.
Led by artistic director & Grammy
nominee Monica Huggett, the IBO
explores the playing techniques and
performance styles of the 17th and 18th
centuries, using only baroque instruments
or modern replicas. The resulting
performances – filled with colour,
simmering tension and highly charged
emotion – are a vivid and fascinating
glimpse of the sights and sounds of 18th
Century Europe.
Although the IBO has its roots in the past,
it is a dynamic and constantly evolving
organisation with its sights firmly set on
the future. The orchestra’s international
performances continue to enjoy capacity
audiences and widespread critical

acclaim in Austria, Poland, USA and
most recently at the prestigious Lausanne
Bach Festival in Switzerland. The IBO’s
eagerly anticipated new disc, entitled
Concerti Bizarri (showcasing many of
the orchestra’s exceptional musicians as
soloists) was released in Spring 2016 on
the Linn Record label, to high acclaim
and glowing reviews.
The Irish Baroque Orchestra is delighted
to be a resident ensemble in the National
Concert Hall and is proud to collaborate
with the EU Baroque Orchestra (EUBO)
as an Associate Partner Orchestra for the
exciting new Mobile Baroque Academy –
a large-scale project co-funded by the
European Commission under the Creative
Europe programme.

An annual favourite in the Christmas
calendar, Monica Huggett leads the IBO,
joined by Resurgam choir and outstanding
soloists, in thrilling performances of Handel’s
glorious masterpiece. Messiah shows the
composer at the height of his powers, as
its great vocal numbers tell the story of the
Christ’s birth, death and resurrection. These
performances are simply unmissable!
