Unknown Mar 8, '10, 11:58 a.m. Added: Image Press Release March 2010 Founded in 1989 CARI is Ireland’s leading voluntary provider of therapy to children who have experienced sexual abuse and marks 20 years of this work in 2010. CARI commends the extreme bravery of young man who stood up to his father and the Judicial System and questions the partial suspension of sentence for his abuser. CARI today welcomed the 14 year sentence imposed on a father convicted of the serial rape and abuse of his son then aged 12 to fifteen years. “The suspension of any portion of the sentence was seriously ill judged” said Ms Mary Flaherty, C.E.O. of CARI “in view of the behaviour of the accused and in particular his ongoing denials”. CARI works with children and families affected by abuse and Dr Niall Muldoon (National Clinical Director) stated today that “while this case is a particularly harrowing case it confirms CARI’s experience that the majority of abuse occurs within and around families”. Ms Flaherty adds that “our constitution and society colluded in this situation by the low level of protection afforded to children within their own families. It took a victim of exceptional bravery and determination to achieve justice in our hostile court system which put him on trial also. Hopefully others who are experiencing similar abuse will as follow his example”. Finally, CARI calls for our society to make our children safer once and for all by passing this year’s constitutional referendum Contacts CEO - Mary Flaherty 087 9582250.
